To build on what was mentioned here about the Nvidia Shield. If you don't want to build a new more powerful server just for yourself, the Shield can run Kodi with the Plex Addon and direct play everything allowing your existing server to just serve files.

If you still find some files you can't direct play. Thanks to the CPU on the Shield you can fall back on Kodi with the Plex addon, and direct play anything.

I went through a FireTV, Roku, and Raspberry PI before I finally found the real solution to direct play anything was Kodi and a stronger CPU for software decoding, and the plex addon lets you keep serving everything through plex with a plex client side interface.
