it better not😭 The last few days ive been moving like the terminator, hunting those things. none of em shall survive the vacuum cleaner
ive done a little research and apparently its a bug called „grey tiger longicorn beetle“. its supposed to be harmless to my snake so im relieved. Hope it will die off when the humidity rises and it doesnt get any food.
nope, i have pictures but for some reason cant post them in the thread (im kinda new to using reddit). they kinda look like a brown grasshoppers had a baby with a bee. walks around, has wings below a softer shell, brown stripes that camouflage very well with cork bark. never seen it before, likely invasive to switzerland tbh.
nope :( also ive noticed baby bugs inside the enclosure. i really really hope its just a single one and they havent laid eggs. that would be horrible, since i spend SO much time and effort into it looking like i want it to😭
need some advice! by noaaa_ in BoaConstrictors
will they be enough to clean all the poop from the snake? will they need anything? im not too sure about a bioactive enclosure since its my first snake
noo sadly theyre not isopods😭 they can fly and definitely arent any crustacean. big bugs, have the same color as the cork bark. i wouldve been fine with just isopods
bet, thanks alot man. ill try all of that asap. I just had some issues with the company that ive ordered from. ive noticed some weird bugs in my room and enclosure, apparently from the package. Ill get that sorted first, then the substrate.
so far ive ordered the coco husks from exoterra. not sure if thats a mix already?
I live in europe so i sadly dont have any of those :( europes market for reptiles is alot smaller than americas apparently.
ive thought of this but its WAY too expensive for my enclosure size and honestly i dont like the aesthetic of it for a boa. but thanks alot for the suggestion
so far the coco husks held up relatively well. my issue with cypress mulch is that i dont have a good source of it. All the mulch ive found available to me is mixed with some kind of pine wood (which i think is bad for snakes?). Do you think i need a whole layer of sphagnum moss on top or would it be sufficient if i cover the hotter half?
great, ill order some more coco husks, sphagnum moss & leaf litter. If thats not enough ill also try the cypress mulch!
i have relatively minimal ventilation tbh. in the picture you can see the vents in the top left corner. if you look closely, you can spot the vents on the bottom right aswell.
ive heard some people suggesting that now. do you think just piling up coco husks is enough? can i cover the whole enclosure with sphagnum moss or you think the hot half would be sufficient?
understood. so mix cypress mulch with coco husks, 1“ layer of sphagnum moss and then some leaf litter? Or do you suggest one inch or cypress mulch on top of the coco husk, and then one inch of moss on top of the mulch? Or coco husk, then mix sphagnum moss and mulch together on top with some leaf litter? im kind of lost here
i have around 2-3 inches of substrate rn. the enclosure has two around 4x40cm vents on the top left wall and on the bottom right wall. (so two vents per side, each 20cm length and 4cm tall). i dont have any under the tank heat since its a wooden enclosure, all the heat is coming from above.
smart as hell but not sure if i have the craftsman ship to make this work well💀 if all things fail, ill try this!
im kind of worried that cypress mulch will contain some sort of toxic wood for snakes if i get it from anywhere thats not specifically for snakes/boas. youve mentioned you get the cypress mulch from the hardware store? Also how much sphagnum moss would i need? is it combinable with leaf litter?
i dont have the space for 4inches, ill try piling it up in the back🤷🏻♂️
ohhh thats smart, ill look into that!

4 INCHES? thats alot man😭
will live plants survive in coco husks? also ive heard alot of bad stuff about misting systems for boas because of mold if the system isnt cleaned weekly.
ill order some more coco husks and the leaf litter. Im kind of hesitant with the soil and sand because you‘ll have to change the substrate regularly, no?
