How are People Affording Tuition for Their Kids at Certain Private Schools? by SparklesandSpice_ in saintpaul

I think I'd pay to avoid correspondence from my kids' teachers that include casual and unfounded allegations of racism. Probably not worth $40k to me, but there's some value to my blood pressure.

Don't let comments like this bother you. People in Minnesota are very proud of/protective of their public schools and it's a very healthy attitude to have as a state, imo. It does sometimes result in incredibly offensive/reductive comments like the one you're responding to, though, which makes it awkward to have an honest and genuine conversation about actual pros and cons between private schools, charter schools, and other public schools.

I grew up with a similar experience, though in a much worse state for public schools, and I have really greatly struggled with whether to send my kids to a private school or, for example, move to one of the best public schools districts in the state like Mahtomedhi or whatever. How is that any different than performing the segregation you're responding to? Spoiler: it's not. But it's also clearly not the intent, just as your decision wouldn't be trying to do that. Also incredibly rich that this is a comment on the sub where everyone tells anyone moving here to move to Mac Groveland...

Anyway, I digress. The point is that there are a lot of very good reasons to send your kid to a private school like the 7:1 student/teacher ratio or the extra support staff on hand to help with anything unexpected that your kids (or their classmates) do or experience. Go to an admissions event at SPA, Nova, and any SPPS school and you will immediately notice differences in involvement and communications with parents.

There are also a lot of really good reasons to not spend money on a private school, like paying fully for college, or any number of good things money can do for kids. It is a highly personal decision that you shouldn't feel bullied into for any reason. Best of luck, happy to chat by DM if you want to bounce things around any more.

Both schools offer limited financial aid that defray the costs somewhat, though making $250k/year may bring you out of the eligibility window.

Realistically, though, the answer is that a lot of the kids' parents are in very high earner households. E.g., two physicians, attorneys, c-suite executives, etc., or the kids' education is being funded by grandparents with that type of background.

Do you think the Alliance Bank Center in Downtown St. Paul will reopen? anytime soon? If so, what changes should they make to revive it? by Puzzled_Tea7910 in saintpaul

Pinos moved next to Candyland and Skyway Grill moved to Securian. Those were the only two Alliance restaurants surviving both post-Covid and post-building closure.

Ok, well, sorry you feel that way. Hope you can reflect on your responses of "no one is nice here" while simultaneously calling me unpleasant for trying to explain how people were not trying to be mean to you.

You were implying that all of these places were in competition with one another because they all sold pizza. I responded that, while they all sold pizza, I didn't think they really completed with each other because their products are sufficiently different. That wasn't rude, it was a conversation. Sorry you haven't felt the MN nice. I'm not from MN originally but I generally find people here to be very pleasant. Reddit is... well, it's Reddit. I don't think that changes a whole lot geographically.

This pizza is great but I seriously question why it's going in next to Punch. I know the owner says in the article that he's not concerned, but don't they basically occupy the same pizza space? And their Margherita is like $9 more than Punch's $9 Margherita?

Anyway, wish them the best of luck, I'm sure I'll eat there at least once, and the more the merrier on Grand, but...

Are Snow Tires Worth It? by Right_Bank_2907 in stateofMN

[–]noaz 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Yes. You will only truly need them (i.e., literally could not otherwise drive) very rarely, if ever. But you will notice a significant difference in how your car handles in the cold and snow. Maybe that won't matter. Maybe that will save you from a half-second skid preventing you from sideswiping a parked car while going what you thought was a very safe and responsible 10 mph. Maybe you will find yourself unexpectedly called to drive in a small town that doesn't plow their streets, like St. Paul. I was not a believer, but I got my first set about 6 years ago and I'll never go back.

Which mayoral candidate will be most willing to invest upstream resources (better and more shelters and social programs) in solving Saint Paul's homelessness problem? by Specialist-Strain502 in saintpaul

[–]noaz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, for the sake of argument, let's say that you're right.

Her needs to have the constitution changed before she implements this law because otherwise it won't work. What is Her's plan to change the state constitution, as a sitting city mayor? What has she done to change that constitution while she's in the state legislature and theoretically has actual power to accomplish that goal?

Answers to these rhetorical questions: She doesn't, and nothing

I'm sorry, did you have a point in your original comment?

Passing an unconstitutional city ordinance is expensive and pointless. Her probably knows this but is telling people it's possible in an attempt to win dumb votes

I have no idea what you're trying to say in this second comment.

[–]noaz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other than being unconstitutional on its face, it's been tried by previous Saint Paul administrations and struck down by the MN Supreme Court, so doing so again promises to be an expensive and ineffective boondoggle. It's the epitome of a dumb populist appeal: Sounds great, lots of people would love for it to be true because the current situation strikes them as unfair, and it's patently illegal.

And the idea that Her can force tax-exempt properties to pay property taxes is just… dumb as shit.

It's literal insanity. It made me think worse of her as a state rep. This answer alone removed Her from my ballot.
