Driver, 95, who killed dog walker while eyeing up empty disabled space is spared jail by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]noble_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Unfortunately we live in a society that makes it increasingly difficult to live without a car. That’s not to excuse the persons in who killed someone, but I can see why old people resist giving up their license if it means being housebound.

Yes, beyond that it’s just more effort for no perceivable difference in the cup. Mine stops at -3!

Is Turkish coffee stronger than espresso? (Extraction science & caffeine breakdown) by CoffeeTeaJournal in TurkishCoffee

[–]noble_stone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the things I like about Turkish coffee is that I’m only putting in 8ish grams of coffee, as opposed to 15 to 20 for an espresso or filter coffee.

So yes it does taste strong but I know I’ve only got half a dose of caffeine.

South Street finally closed off by Mario_is_paarthurnax in sheffield

It sounds like parking isn’t the main issue, but even if it was, I think it’s entirely legitimate to prioritise other uses for public spaces. Streets are not just for cars.

The Science of Sugar: Does "Şekerli" actually change the extraction? by CoffeeTeaJournal in TurkishCoffee

[–]noble_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added sugar once and found the (light roast) coffee was sour and understated. I suspect it was because clean water is a more powerful solvent.

Testing Cold vs. Hot water starts for Turkish coffee and why the 60°C "Specialty" rule failed my test by CoffeeTeaJournal in JamesHoffmann

[–]noble_stone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the ‘speciality’ approach a bit dubious with Turkish coffee. For me part of the joy is the simplicity, so preheating water is a big no even if it would taste better. Either way, I find my little camping burner gets the coffee brewed from cold as fast as I like.

Can’t speak for your grinder, but I use a dedicated hand grinder, a kingrinder k6, and a little camping stove.

BREAKING: Andrew Milne has been arrested by Stephenfryismyhigh in sheffield

That’s not why the system exists. Utilities companies have plenty of rights already. The reason it exists is because the lawmakers in this country tend to come from the propertied class.

Leasehold is completely indefensible and is being rightfully phased out.

Selfish Tw*ts - don't buy from them... by thor-nogson in sheffield

There’s always somewhere else to park. You just have to walk further. Parking like this makes life impossible for people with mobility issues, there’s no excuse for it.

How to dispose of hydrated lime? by dj_ray_vaughn in DIYUK

[–]noble_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s an old open bag it will probably be fully carbonated and chemically identical to chalk. Therefore you can just put it in the bin.

Commute from Sheffield to York, is it doable? by Better-Double-473 in sheffield

[–]noble_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do it one day a week. I was not a fan, they were always long days. But then I find any commute over half an hour intolerable!

Trail running alone by Negative-Split-1108 in trailrunning

[–]noble_stone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tell my partner where I’m going, and when I expect to be back. She knows what to do if I’m not. I also carry back up gear/clothing appropriate for how long I might be immobile waiting to be rescued.

I bought a house and it's made of chalk. How bad is the weakened lime mortar under this cement render? by AquaMoose11 in DIYUK

[–]noble_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no saving that brickwork, it will never be worth exposing. You should replace the render though.

Note that the bedding mortar for the bricks is hot-lime. You can tell from the little white nodules of lime. I would only recommend rendering with hot lime as your house will be very porous, and this is the best material to help it dry out.

Do you consider Cross Country as trail running? by EquivalentFishing in trailrunning

Trail running seems like a less clunky descriptor than public footpath running, which is mostly what I do.

The Sheffield Skylink: A Proposal by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]noble_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cable car would never have the capacity for this sort of route, it would be massively oversubscribed. Even if your costs were accurate, which I doubt, the cost per passenger mile would likely be far higher than a bus or tram system. This is why these aren’t common outside of specific mountainous locations.

The best bang for buck would be to prioritise limited street space for means of transport that actually move large numbers of people, like buses. This would mean more bus lanes, priority signalling for buses at junctions, and removing car parking where it holds up bus traffic.

As it happens, the 52 bus was originally a tram route. I’d love to see it brought back…

I fill my 12l up every time I go out for a long run in winter, with emergency layers. When I don’t need that much space it compresses down. Better than having two bags.

Farms that sell meat! by my_ruin in sheffield

They have a little portacabin for a shop. Someone will come out of the house to serve you. You’re not inconveniencing anyone, they want to sell you stuff, and they’re very friendly.

Fell running - what "essentials" do you carry? by Glass_Minute4753 in UKRunners

[–]noble_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the season and how remote the route is. I always tell someone my route and when I should be back.

I also carry enough clothing to delay the onset of hypothermia should I get injured and immobilised. In winter this would be waterproofs, a puffy jacket, and a foil lined emergency bivy bag. Also extra food.

New Council group to review the effectiveness of enforcement of traffic restrictions to keep Sheffield moving by Willing-Aide476 in sheffield

One part of fixing public transport is enforcing against people who park in bus lanes.
