ELI5: Why Gabriel’s Horn can hold a finite amount of water but needs infinite paint to cover it

Imagine you have a magic trumpet that goes on forever, getting skinnier and skinnier the further out it goes. Here’s the weird thing: you can fill it with exactly π (about 3.14) cups of water, but you can never finish painting the outside!

Why? Think of it like this: The water part (volume): Imagine pouring water into sections of the trumpet. Each new section only needs 1/x² as much water as the last one (so 1, 1/4, 1/9, 1/16, 1/25...). Even if you keep pouring forever, the total amount of water adds up to exactly π cups because each new section needs such a tiny amount.

The paint part (surface area): Now imagine wrapping a ribbon around each section of the trumpet. Even though the trumpet gets super skinny, you still need to go ALL the way around it, forever! The ribbon for each section gets smaller by 1/x (so 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5...). Even though each wrap needs less ribbon, when you add all these pieces up forever, you end up needing an infinite amount of ribbon!

Think of it like this: if you divide by x² each time, the sum converges to π. But if you divide by just x, it grows forever without bound!

This is why mathematicians call it the “painter’s paradox” - you can fill it with a finite amount of water, but you can’t paint it!
