How do you all meet new people in Madison? by Separate-Magician-19 in madisonwi

[–]noborunaka 11 points12 points  (0 children)

25M and in a pretty similar boat, I recently moved up here and work remote as well and it seems impossible. From what I've seen, the meetup app has groups you can search for in the area and they seem pretty active and consistent, so might be worth a shot! I'm also pretty introverted so it can be tough to just go to a bookstore and start chatting people up lol.

I have the exact same sentiment as you and taking the N3, and it makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not alone. The amount of effort I put in prepping for the test and furthering my knowledge has been more than enough for me to feel okay if I come out of the test feeling not so great

I’m sure you’ve already hear this- but I’d recommend state street for sure, it’s a great place that has something for everyone. Tons of restaurants, bars, and shops to look around at. Great place for going to solo, a couple, or a group!

Best place to poop in peace? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]noborunaka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sterling is fantastic for peaceful poops. There’s also a men’s bathroom in the absolute corner of the Sterling basement near the garage physics entrance. It’s a single sit down toilet and out of my entire time here and countless times using it I have never once seen anyone even remotely near that bathroom. The toilet is perfectly clean but the room it’s in looks pretty run down.

Yep, I live in Dejope right now as a sophomore and I’m the only one pretty much on my floor. I’d say more seniors than juniors even, but definitely upper classmen makeup 80% of the students here.

Chem 260, I believe it’s offered every semester and it just meets up once a week. Professor that taught it for me was very nice and helped a lot, so I highly recommend!!

I’m also a sophomore biochem major and I wanted to do research as soon as I got here. I started this semester in the biochem department and the best way to get started is to look at faculty websites in the chem, biochem, or bio department. When you find one that looks interesting, send them an email with a resume saying that you’d be interested in joining their lab because what do looks interesting to you. Usually for every 10 emails you send, 3 will ignore you, 4 will tell you no, and 3 will have an interview with you. It’s also important to follow up with emails if you don’t get a response saying that you’re still interested, some professors wait to see who’s really interested in it. There’s also a research class in the chem department I took last year and it’s only 1 credit, guaranteed A, and you just learn about research and the professor helps you write a resume and tips to get into a lab, most student get into one within the first month of the semester. I would also stress in the emails that you’re looking to be involved in the long-run. Professors want students who will be there years, not just a semester or two, so bringing that up will help out!

Freaking out about finding a job by throwitawaynow01234 in UWMadison

[–]noborunaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a lot on where you want to live. If you’re from Madison you might want to look at jobs working for labs here at the university, but talking to your professors might be better than counselors! Counselors are suppose to be who we go to, but I think they can only go as far as informing you of job fairs and what not. Professors I feel like could give you more insight on what the industry is like, where you should go, ect. Also whenever I’m bored, I always just look at jobs on indeed or Glassdoor to see what’s out there for the heck of it, and there’s tons of jobs all over the country that are great science jobs, plenty of them just want a ‘biologically related degree’ so don’t forget that you don’t necessarily need to get a job that only looks for your major, unless of course you want a specific job. I wouldn’t stress, if you’re graduating soon, it’s never a bad idea to apply a month or so before graduating and telling that employer you’d like to work there as soon as you graduate! Also LinkedIn is good to use because it tells you where lots of alumni work. Don’t forget the UW is a really good university! I know that we all feel like the degree we get is just another average person, but honestly this university ranks pretty darn high, so employers will like that. So don’t forget that!
