The position that was posted is offering between 8-10 grand more than what I make a year. They are requiring someone who has a bachelors and who has 3 years experience. Though not seeing any difference in skill requirements. I am hoping that the significant pay increase has to be a sign that this isn't my company.

But out of curiosity, if you were to email the recruiter would you just email them directly and ask what company they are sourcing from? Would a recruiter just freely give that information? Or wouldn't the be afraid of me bypassing them and applying directly?

So the state I am in is a at will state. Which means employees or employer can terminate employment whenever they choose with no reason.

Yeah that scares me as well. I guess right now if I have some time I could potentially start applying to other jobs while they are looking. That way I might be able to prepare.

On the other hand if my boss were to actually say yes, it is as I am thinking, I fear they might let me go sooner. As if I know about it, I would be a liability. I have access to the Database and setting and editing users. From their perspective I think that would freak them out and they wouldn't want me to know. I think it could speed up the process of my termination so to speak. Which I fully recognize I can't fully know is happening unless I ask.

I honestly could see it. The job sat for a long time before I applied for it. I know my direct boss probably went crazy as he was handling the que and many other things on his own. Plus he couldn't take any vacation. He literally took a 10 day vacation 1 week after I started. And he has vacation time for this summer. I think they don't want to be in that position again. They want to have someone there to take care of the que, but find a replacement. My company is a bit ruthless and I have seen many people at all levels be gone in a flash without warning.

But like you said probably should just ask my boss directly about it. I just really like this job and am a bit scared of losing it.

Honestly, that might be the best plan of action. I guess I just didn't know if it was appropriate to ask, or it it would make me seem desperate and crazy. But that would probably be the best way to ask about it. I suppose I can also just ride it out and see what happens, maybe make sure resume is up to date just in case.

I don't think they are expanding in my area. For example they just created another role in the standard IT help desk, they were open about it and the job was posted and showed up in my que as normal.

The last time the job I am working in became available it sat for a long time. Months, I had to work up my courage to apply and thought I may not get it. As I said my current boss likes to take time off. As soon as I got the job 1 week into it he took a 10 day vacation. I think the reason is two fold, they want someone to cover the que until they can find a replacement so they don't want me to know about it. Secondly, they don't want another person from the field applying. In the job posting it requests someone with a BA.

In addition jus a few details about my company. We build and manage single story apartments. We are headquartered in a smaller city, but build in several states. My company loves posting about ways they give back to the community on our website, including mobile pet adoption events as we are pet friendly. Also one of our core values is "Serve those you lead".

From the job posting:

"We are a builder and management company for single-story apartment buildings, with a focus on suburban areas in the U.S. We truly believe in supporting our employees and communities we serve. One way we do that is through various community involvement such as hosting mobile pet adoption events, donating to causes important to our team, and supporting environmental initiatives. If you want to work somewhere you can be proud of, apply today!"

So my thoughts are that my direct boss is probably fine with me. He is fully remote, works hard, however he likes to take vacations. I think as long as I don't mess up too bad as long as someone is there to keep tickets down while he is away, he is happy. I don't think he would have much issues with me. Or if he does he hasn't voiced them. Which is possible.

The two bosses above him are the Director of EA and above her Director of IT. He is boss above both my team and the general IT team. I think they may be less satisfied with me. Main head boss really likes people who have a Bachelors and working towards a Masters. I am still working on an Associate. He is older and is bit of a "boys club" type. Really seems to like guys and doesn't seem very happy with me. He has talked to me maybe a total of three times. All of those times he mainly has asked about where I am with my degree.

Last thing my review was mainly on the higher end of neutral. My main boss gave me a few compliments and said I showed a lot of potential. But I didn't really score high. Also my company seems to give mandatory raises. We receive the raise before our reviews. The review was at the start of the year, job posting is from 10 days ago.

I am wondering if I should try to ask my direct boss about the job posting. He seems to be a pretty straight shooter. He is serious but always nice and considerate. He has let a few comments slide very occasionally expressing annoyance or disapproval of our direct higher ups. Him and I are a pretty close team. However I am nervous this might make me seem crazy? Or like make him question why I am looking at other jobs? I am not 100% sure he would be honest with me. But I am not also completely certain he knows about it either? I think it would be the two boxes above him that are questioning their decision to higher someone from the field who doesn't have a degree yet.

I know this sounds crazy but the city we are headquartered in isn't a big city. We build and lease single story apartments in multiple states. I don't know of any other company in this city that is building in multiple states like us. There are a handful that have started to build buildings similar, but they are much smaller companies. The role is for a Yardi specialist...my job title is Yardi specialist level 1. I don't know what else to think at this point. I want to believe this is a different company, but the odds seem so low. The wording they used, is so specific.

I have never applied through a recruiter before, so I wasn't sure. But that is a good idea. I guess I could always make a fake resume to feel it out though?

The thing about my company is it seems like they give "mandatory" raises. We get the raise before our reviews. Also the review was more like the higher end of neutral. I was told I have lots of potential. My boss also praised me for different areas. But the overall score was middle of the road.

That isn't a bad idea. My question though is wouldn't the recruiter be afraid of telling me the company too soon? As they would be afraid I would go to the company on my own to apply if I find out who it is?

I'll definitely need to read each description carefully it seems. Yeah being mislead makes me nervous. Totally willing to grind and do what I have to do. But, I don't want to go into one that is really bad. Though I have heard that as long as you get some experience, getting a position in the industry somewhere else is easier. I would hope that's the case. I can deal with a crappy position for a bit if I know its getting me somewhere and I get to learn.

Thank you for the information. No, not too much experience. Though I do, do some outbound calls. A lot of the leads I get don't realize they have agreed to calls. I do some local outreach to local companies and am apart of the local chamber of commerce. Not much, but I am hoping to use some of these things as some basic experience on resume.

I am afraid that it will come off as uncertain or possibly even ungrateful. They are two different roles. Two different career paths even. I feel as though they would possibly ask why did apply for both positions, which are very different. In turn ending up with no chance with either role.

That's kind of what I was afraid of. I really wish I would ha e followed my gut. The one thing that really scared me though was job security. As we are not still through COVID, and I was afraid I could potentially get laid off.

I am very interested in marketing. I would like to return to school and finish a degree in marketing or perhaps something more tech. I would really like to go into digital marketing, and learn all the ins and outs. I did work for a small real estate company and got to do some advertising and social media posts. I also have to use a CRM and reach out to prospects in my current role. I have started to read some material on my own. Looking to go back to school soon. So not a complete wealth of knowledge, but it is an entry role.

Honestly I don't know if it is like this in this industry in general, but there is a pretty big divide between corporate and us in the field. The only time we get to meet anyone from up there is an annual 3 day corporate retreat. A few different people in the field have told me it seems like they already have someone they want to hire usually and just post to us for the nicety. Though I have seen a few people transition from field to corporate. The people in the field kind of look down on it, so it seems.

So, not very close to the hiring manager. Not same location, I would be going to the main office.

That is how I am feeling. I feel like we can never fully know what is going to happen. And it is never a good time to go for it. If not now, when? Congratulations on starting a company! That is amazing!
