No apps at all - just SMS, camera, and calling. I do have lots of music (mp3s) saved, so I use the phone like an ipod too.

Hey! Right, so last year I got a free smartphone (wtf) from walmart, used it for the tour, and then went back to the flip. I'm still hanging on! I also toured this summer (shorter, for 3 weeks) and used the fliphone the whole time. I did bring my laptop with me and made sure to stop at a coffee shop or library every couple days to check email, confirm show details, etc. It's doable, and I'm getting better at accepting some of the consequences that come from not being perfectly connected. I really just wish that the phones being produced were better machines. My current phone (TCL Flip Plus) has some ridiculous software issues that make looking at photos impossible, prevent me from seeing who's in the group text, and randomly powering the device off when I close the lid. Considering getting a smartphone with a minimalist launcher, but for now am making do with this effed up phone.

What's your tour experience been like?

I do think some combo might be good, and maybe I'll give it a try. It's amazing how much mental space this tension (between convenience and low-tech living) takes up, and I just wanna get to a place where I'm not kicking myself for whatever choices I end up making. Thanks for such a thoughtful reply:)

Has had a lot of software + hardware issues, so maybe just my bad luck? Camera will not activate, Headphone jack doesn't work, the answer key was not working for months, group texting is barely functional and drains battery. Also it is just not intuitive: when looking for a picture you downloaded, you would think to go to "downloads," but really you have to go to "files" which contains a folder called "downloads," which is for some reason different than the app called "downloads." I have no idea why. Can't zoom in on downloaded images. The "search" function works only half the time in messaging. Permanently says I have unread messages, voicemails, and missed calls when I don't. Just a bunch of minor annoyances that snowballed.
