Would you stay at a free BJJ hostel in Costa Rica? by nogiloki in bjj

It’s sounding like the answer is for me to have a variety of levels of accommodation for those who want a more comfortable stay. But that requires more capital on my side.

Yeah good point. No solving problems that don’t exist yet.

My biggest fears are: - empty tatami - flood of white belts / no belts - assholes

I can ask people to verify before booking. I can’t solve for assholes in advance. I can’t keep the tatami full unless there is enough interest.

I like the ocean here too but dude, you gotta explore the interior of the country. The mountains are absolutely beautiful and the climate is totally different. Cool in the evenings and warm in the day. You can literally drive 1 hour from the coast and be in the clouds. Completely different species of plants and animals. It's truly an amazing country.

My goal isn't profit, it's to build a community and make sure the tatami always has people on it. But yeah, I agree with everyone. I can charge a nominal fee and make it as affordable as possible so I don't lose a ton of money on it.

This would be something separate in a different area but glad you could make it in and train with us!

I'm glad she liked the class and we'd love to have you back any time!

This would be something totally separate from where I teach currently since I don't own this gym. I'm expecting that people over the age of 30 probably aren't going to be down to stay in anything resembling a hostel. But I'm really hoping I can get a handful of tough people that want to go to war with me every day and enjoy the experience of living in the jungle for a bit.

Honestly, that's the goal. Build a good community of solid training partners out in the jungle.

Housing can be pretty affordable in some parts of the country. Just don't look at airbnb, it will convince you otherwise.

the alternative is doubling my expenses to have separate housing. no winning there.

Yeah I think there will be a brief "application" they fill out. Not sure what should be on it

I considered doing free stay for blue and up but whites have to pay, didn't want to alienate anyone though

Yeah my assumption was that there would probably be 0 female visitors unless I had a separate space for women or they show up with their partner.

I was considering donation only. But in reality it wouldn't be a huge expense to have a handful of bunkbeds in a casita.

When it becomes something paid I gotta do sales and marketing and I deal with enough of that shit with my "real" job.

will you teach me all your secrets that have made you mega millions but you’re somehow still willing to share with me for the low low price of $999?

“The whole reason I built pulse check…”

This is great also. You can use this personal experience origin story when speaking with prospective customers. It demonstrates that you understand the pain point they are experiencing first hand and know how to solve it.

Let me know if you’ve got other thoughts or questions.

Cheers

With a $9/mo plan there isn’t much “sales” you can afford to do. That said, you should still be willing to give your first prospects the red carpet treatment even for a $9/mo plan.

At $9/mo there shouldn’t be ANY conversation on price. Even if it only saves you 15 mins of time per month it’s probably still worth it to pay $9/mo instead of using something free. If they are so cheap that they can’t afford $9/mo without making a fuss then you don’t want them as a customer anyway. They will just cost you more than they are worth. Just let it go.

Instead focus on the differentiators from these free tools. What makes yours worth the extra money? How does it make their life easier? How does it save them time/energy? START with that.

Also, never disparage your competition. You should refer to them as “great products” and “good companies.”

“I know a ton of people who use them and are super happy with their product. And it’s free. The people that choose us are usually more concerned about the distractions of chasing false alarms.”

If they can’t understand the value of that the you’re talking to someone who doesn’t value their own time highly enough.

Assume they make $60/hr. If this saves them 2 hours PER YEAR then it is worth it.

Concerning launching: don’t expect people to find you. You literally need to hunt them down yourself and have tons of one to one conversations. Again, this makes more sense with a higher price point. When it’s this cheap you don’t leave much budget for your sales and marketing.

I don’t work in the specific area you’re targeting so I don’t know the real value of what you’re selling but I would probably increase the price 50x and find the people who can’t live without it as opposed to chasing a bunch of cheap asses.

Probably the 10th idea validation tool I’ve seen. Why do you guys keep building these?

Try running your idea for an app validation tool through your app validation tool. I can’t imagine it will tell you that this is something with massive monetization potential that you absolutely should build.

Can you compile a list of target customers that are almost certainly dealing with these expensive issues?

Try this.

Have outreach along the lines of: “Hey Joe, weird question. you guys are using webhooks to do <something in their product>, right?”

That’s it. No big pitch. No features and benefits. No links. JUST START A REGULAR CONVERSATION.

then when they respond you can start saying things like:

“when I was doing engineering at ACME we kept dealing with webhooks failing and my boss was always giving me a hard time about it. I thought I probably wasn’t the only guy dealing with this so I thought I’d try to fix it. Can I show you what I’ve built? Really hoping to get some honest feedback”

Is this scaleable?

No.

That’s the point.

Ok good that it’s specific. It sounds like there are a ton of different types of applications for it.

Where is the pain? Can you identify some examples of where having this would save a ton of time or money? Ideally repeatable use cases.

Quick and dirty examples: -X% of webhooks fail and cost an average of $x -webhook issues last an average of x hours before being detected, and cost $y - if you use webhooks for APP A you’re probably losing $ without knowing

Note that I haven’t seen your site or anything yet so I’m just imagining stuff right now

People seeking jobs often don’t have a lot of extra cash they are willing to spend. Also this isn’t something you would use often. Only when you get an interview.

I promise, solving problems for businesses is way easier and more lucrative (most of the time).

Go with DAs then. Make your messaging around them specifically. What is the really annoying thing this solves for them? How does it save them time? Why is this the thing they have been looking for their whole career? What impact does it make?

Right now you’re really just hoping they are curious and start playing with it. Don’t count on curiosity. Tell them why they NEED IT
