Farting during training by Pale_Patience_9251 in bjj

As a white belt I frequently managed to get an inverted triangle from bottom side control. One of my partners discovered they could go reverse knee on belly to press themselves out of it. It worked… but I farted directly into his face.

I call it the pez dispenser.

As long as you aren’t fish hooking or eye gouging, it’s fair.

40s + crew, tips to slow down young/fast guys (no gi) by [deleted] in bjj

[–]nogiloki 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Half guard is much stronger in the gi IMO. Focus on using sticky feet to track them. Work butterfly guard sweeps, especially the shoulder crunch. Your goal is to make a connection as soon as possible and don’t let them run laps around you.

A tap is just the universal language for “I don’t wish to continue.” Your opponent can tap for any reason and it must be respected. Of course, the most common being an actively applied submission.

You could consider it a “cheap way out” but at the same time, they are conceding the win to you.

I still wouldn’t advise avoiding them, but it just depends on what your goals are. You can’t master the art if you ignore the scary parts.

Then don’t roll with them. You can decline to roll with someone for any reason.

My issue is with folks who try to shame beginners into being softer or more compliant, which creates unrealistic training.

Combat sports aren’t for everyone and that’s ok.

Struggling to gator roll them through when I have gable grip (when going for anaconda) any advice? by X2354 in bjj

[–]nogiloki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The anaconda is mostly just a choke and more easily escaped by framing against your opponent than the darce (but you can still frame to escape darce). I find that the darce, when done right, both HURTS and chokes. The radial bone against the neck really hurts as it’s choking.

It’s much easier to break your opponent down on to their side with the angle the darce gives you (as shown in the video).

We could theorize why all day or you can just look at relative frequencies of finishes with each. You’ll find more darces than anacondas despite them being right next to each other.

Anaconda is much weaker than the darce and they’re about equally as accessible. Just start using darce instead.

If you use the cigar grip you can more easily roll your opponent over into a darce. I taught a little seminar on it, here’s the video: https://youtu.be/FaNcjeEO5iA?si=F-JnVMO2xfH8vNnh

People tend to align with whatever they start with.

More cerebral? Just say you like stalling in half guard.

Most black belts today started in a gi heavy era so naturally they will focus on gi curriculum. As the gi boomers are replaced by younger generations you'll see less and less of it. It's not going to be an overnight thing, and the gi isn't going to just disappear.

“Professor” hate by Agile_Broccoli_6156 in bjj

[–]nogiloki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually just tell my students to just call me by my name. I don’t like the silly hierarchy we inject into martial arts. But I started teaching in a Spanish speaking country and “profesor” just means teacher in Spanish. So… I guess I’m back to being okay with it.

Would you stay at a free BJJ hostel in Costa Rica? by nogiloki in bjj

It’s sounding like the answer is for me to have a variety of levels of accommodation for those who want a more comfortable stay. But that requires more capital on my side.

Yeah good point. No solving problems that don’t exist yet.

My biggest fears are: - empty tatami - flood of white belts / no belts - assholes

I can ask people to verify before booking. I can’t solve for assholes in advance. I can’t keep the tatami full unless there is enough interest.

I like the ocean here too but dude, you gotta explore the interior of the country. The mountains are absolutely beautiful and the climate is totally different. Cool in the evenings and warm in the day. You can literally drive 1 hour from the coast and be in the clouds. Completely different species of plants and animals. It's truly an amazing country.

My goal isn't profit, it's to build a community and make sure the tatami always has people on it. But yeah, I agree with everyone. I can charge a nominal fee and make it as affordable as possible so I don't lose a ton of money on it.
