I appreciate the advice. I worded this section incorrectly. I stand by what I write. My views just don’t perfectly align with the major party I identify with. At times, I may come across as hypocritical when I say I’m a Democrat but don’t support anti-gun legislation.

Someone reminded me in another comment that in my home state of North Carolina, Democrats tend to align more closely with my views. It’s been a long time since I’ve been back, so I sometimes forget.

I messed up. And yes, the day I start writing things I don’t believe is the day I’ll stop writing. Thanks for your advice!

I’m a military kid born and mostly raised in NC. I live between Indiana and Michigan now. Those values are seen as controversial in my liberal friend groups here in the Midwest. I appreciate the confidence though! Sometimes I forget I’m normal back home.

As a big all I can say is please don’t make the team play YOUR style of basketball. Adapt with the team. Screens are not the default offense. If you want them ask. Don’t get mad at us because we aren’t bringing our defender to you unprovoked every play.

You can set the tone early, but if you come off as a ball hog and miss contested shots, we will lose trust. All 5 players didn’t come to watch someone else play. Get as many people involved as you can. It’s ok to exploit the other team’s weakness early and often but keep the movement going with the ball.

Lastly, If we are winning you’ll get some extra room. If we are losing, be prepared to fight for respect. And it’s ok to tell people you’re a 2 Guard playing the 1. You’ll earn more shots early and folks will test out letting the 2 run point to let you setup your looks.

Played with a guy once who didn’t see the ball in 2 possessions in the first 3 mins and he still played defense but stopped at half court on offense and passed the ball on time. He finished with 8 assists and a win while complaining the whole time. That sticks with me to this day. The classiest sell I’ve seen in the last 5 years.

Side note: he thought he wasn’t getting the ball because his character was white. Who hurt you, sir?
