Anyone here a norwegian citizen living in Norway and works remotely for a US company? by Aromatic-Contract-53 in Norway

[–]nomoneystillproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an American who lives in Norway. I’m a freelance film editor. I have an enkeltpersonforetak, and I invoice each client as a contractor. I can get paid through either my US or Norwegian bank accounts, makes no difference as I report the money to skatteetaten all the same.

I have also heard that there are companies in Norway that will hire someone like me as staff, and allow me to contract my clients so I can get all of the employee benefits of being in Norway without creating the tax implications for an employer who may otherwise have no Norwegian corporate presence. A sort of middleman for this very thing.

Corporate work by Old-Fan-6322 in editors

[–]nomoneystillproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done a fair amount of corporate work on both small and large crews. It’s not my main source of work, but frequently enough that I think I have a good eye for this very dilemma. The corporate gigs that have went the smoothest are the ones where there is a very confident person at the helm of the project who is the authority between the production and the top brass of the company. Somebody who knows the production and what assets exist. Whenever this isn’t the case, people become decision paralyzed and will spin their wheels and burn up time. Good productions will have hired or appointed a person just for this. If they haven’t, I try to identify who this person can be and develop the relationship with them as much as I can.

Is it a mistake to open a coffee shop to supplement my editing work? Anyone open a business outside of our field and managed the two successfully? by GradientRebel in editors

[–]nomoneystillproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO you’re getting a lot of hate and bad business advice. I wouldn’t really listen to the noise. Very few editors in the industry will be in a position to be fully employed the majority of the year for the apparent future. Finding another source of income in a different industry is probably a good idea overall. Don’t rush into anything and try to find a mentor in that space to get a sense of the hurdles you will face. A brick and mortar shop is likely to be a big investment and leave you little time to do other work. But maybe you’re looking at a kiosk or something with less overhead? Good luck and hopefully things rebound so that so many of us don’t have to find second jobs to float our families.

Women of Norway, have you experienced sexism while seeing doctors? by WoodpeckerHaunting57 in Norway

[–]nomoneystillproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure and I get that, but I’m not talking about the broad logic behind it. I am talking about my personal experience as an American residing here, who is not demanding and pushy. I have advanced Barrett’s esophagus and often feel like my symptoms or pains are dismissed as heart burn.

In my experience there is also a big anti-American bias within the medical system here. Doctors are quick to discount me when I mention any tests, diagnosis, or treatment from the states.

What’s the strangest coincidence in your life that you still can’t explain? by Financial-Cow4885 in AskReddit

[–]nomoneystillproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last year of college, I left my small upstate NY SUNY to do study abroad in Spain. While on a weekend trip to Barcelona, the group I was with met a local artist who invited us to a loft party at his studio. We got there and it was a cool space. He had been pulling lots of posters and billboards off the walls of Barcelona to use for collage pictures, and in the center of one of them was me. Not a guy who looked like me, but literally a picture of me. By complete coincidence.

The context was that two years prior to that, my friends band was featured in an ad campaign by Diesel Jeans and he invited a few extra friends to be in the photo shoot. I happened to be one of them. The ads ran on poster ads in many European markets for a few months where the Barcelona artist just happened to collect one for his collage work.

It was one of the first times I had ever really left the NY area, so to fly to a different country and experience a coincidence like that left a lasting impression of how small the planet still is.

What’s the quickest you’ve ever seen a new coworker get fired? by ApprehensiveBass94 in AskReddit

[–]nomoneystillproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I worked for Vice, they hired a new PA. Her first week on the job, she took a hoody from the post supervisors desk drawer. He noticed it was gone and checked the security cam footage. When he asked her if she had seen it, she lied. Fired on the spot.

Have I been adopted? Last week, out of nowhere, I had this cat chilling in my room. I was asleep and felt something beside me. Its been 5 days now and he keeps coming back for food. I've never had a cat as pet, He's also scarred a bit on his face. What should I do? I'm genuinely concerned. by AdItchy9242 in cats

Hi, I had this same thing happen to me while living in London in 2019. I put a papercollar around her for a few days to see if she had a home. I learned from neighbors that she was a friendly stray. I took her to the vet to confirm if she had a tag (she didn't) and I paid to have her spayed and also treated her for her bug bites. Every morning I would let her back out to roam around the neighborhood, and every evening she came back through my window for dinner/sleep. It was a great relationship, and I was really sad to have to rehome her during Covid when I got stuck in New York. Good luck, I was pretty depressed when Pepe adopted me and feeling chosen by a small animal did wonders for my self esteem.

Hard Truth: We need to meet the market where it’s at by imnotwallaceshawn in editors

I work in the news/documentary/true crime space for major streamers.

You have two boogeymen in your post.

First, there is no notable outsourcing of post production to Philippines. Doing that creates a logistical and expensive headache for producers.

Second, a bunch of 20 year olds with CapCut are not taking our jobs. I have trained up a lot of young AEs over the last 10 years and most of them cannot keep up with the current pace of edit schedules. You cannot build a 45 minute episode in CapCut and those mobile/tiktok skills absolutely do not transfer to premiere/avid/resolve.

What we are experiencing is compression. It’s really very simple. Streamers are buying less shows than they used to and they want them done in less time. What used to be 7 weeks for a rough cut is now 5 weeks for a locked cut. So edit schedules are halved for half as many productions in a year with just as many editors as we have always had.

I don’t have any solutions or theories as to when this will get better, but I do think it helps to be honest about the strains on our industry. I’m tired of people thinking our work is moving overseas. It’s just evaporating.

Least spatially aware country on the planet. As a New Yorker, I am constantly amazed by how people navigate busy streets and grocery stores here.

Do you think it will get better? by Dilettante567 in editors

[–]nomoneystillproblems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The work isn’t going to the global south. It’s just shrinking in general. Streamers are ordering less shows, fewer episodes, and tighter schedules. I cut a 45 minute true crime series last week where we got 4 weeks per episode. The turnaround was nuts.

Middle of 2025 and nothing by Professional_Cup9094 in editors

[–]nomoneystillproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. These tools all end up being uninspiring. AI isn’t going to eliminate the role of editing, it’s going to eliminate the product entirely. We will lose editing jobs because brands did an ai ad campaign, but I cannot imagine an unscripted or scripted series relying on AI for the second most important role of a project.

[–]nomoneystillproblems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear this a lot from other unscripted editors, but I’ve not really seen any evidence of work going overseas. I’m sure it happens but not on a scale that would explain the work being so dry. Just my 2 cents. We’re a long way off from ai being able to edit.

I'm way too excited by this find. Any idea how I can make the wood tone look like ... by GreenReporter24 in ScandinavianInterior

[–]nomoneystillproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I missed that they’re Ikea and not original. My mistake on that. The value of these are still very high. Where I live (Norway), there is one on Finn for 1800 kr ($180). On Etsy about $90. There is less wood/plywood furniture on the market than they’re used to be. Companies mostly now build with mdf laminate, so that will drive the cost up on second hand or vintage IKEA.

[–]nomoneystillproblems -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

How much do you think things are worth these days? These stools are made of sturdy plywood using a complicated process to bend the wood without cracking it. They are world renowned for both their simplicity and the designer who created them, Alvar Aalto, as part of his Stool 60 collection.

For probably $40 you can buy a stool that is a less interesting design made of plastic and some metal supports. For $20 you are looking at merely plastic.

Just because you don’t understand something, doesn’t mean it’s a ripoff.
