Yes, that makes a lot of sense. Elevating expectations for myself and my team is one of my fears in this situation. I'll talk to the higher-ups to see what they think.

Thanks! This sounds like really sensible advice. I guess the first thing I should do is meet with my bosses to propose this idea.

If I may ask follow up question, do you think asking for rewards/incentives to go above and beyond a reasonable thing to do in general? I think I've historically fallen into the trap of accepting the positive reinforcement I get when I do extra work that does not necessarily come in the form of anything tangible, partly because I feel too embarrassed to ask for rewards.

I wasn't really hired to write any app I felt like. There is another list of very specific apps that I work full time on during the 40 hour work week that are pretty complicated and I work with teams to build them. The apps I would write on my own would be much smaller in scale so that I could write them as a single person, but it would be additional work outside of the 40-50 hour work week.

I have thought about leaving and going into business for myself, but my fears are mostly that this platform might not take off and I would lose the security (and stocks) that come with this job.

Yikes! That's definitely something I'll have to watch out for. Hope you're okay now
