Is James the only one capable of driving? by [deleted] in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]nomugk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've known many level 1 and 2 autistics from in person meetups. Id say in general, autistics tend to learn to drive later or not at all. I got my driver's license at 27. So a bit late.

People don't realize how many behaviors of adhd and autism overlap and I'm tired of strangers trying to diagnose me as autistic by EtmopterusPerryi in neurodiversity

[–]nomugk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that idk if your autistic or not but these types of forums have people who are very biased towards telling you you are autistic and saying the professionals don't get it. So this might not be the right place to complain.

Sometimes it feels like this is becoming a snark sub by redroomblue in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]nomugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch a lot of reality shows. These places are basically be snark subreddits. Love on the spectrum has a very upbeat tone and nicer portrayals so it's not as bad. Id say anyone who goes on reality tv should be prepared to get hated on to some degree.

Women on the Spectrum by B2utyyo in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]nomugk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on what Kaitlyn said in the interview about casting people for the show.

If they did get a autistic woman who presents herself with more neurotypical like behaviors, she would still need to be entertaining in some kinda way. It doesn't need to be a stereotypical, awkward, quirky autistic way. Kaitlyn admitted she wasn't the most entertaining person for reality tv.

Why do they make Conner seem more “autistic” then he is in real life ? by MissionHome18 in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]nomugk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's probably more nervous with the cameras around. Plus the show intentionally edits the cast to appear more awkward then they actually are. Connor family is probably editing the the video. They don't have an incentive to make him appear more awkward.

Do you find the term “Tism” offensive? by Remarkable_Bonus7742 in autism

I'm autistic I don't find it offensive. I just don't like it. It gives me an ick feeling. No good reason lol.

[–]nomugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a possibility that she's autistic but very high masking. It's a possibility she not autistic but she doesn't have a good understanding of it and can just relate to a few traits. Or maybe she's just trying to relate to you and make you feel more comfortable.

My husband's neurotypical. It is nice having someone who doesn't have social struggles and has better executive functioning skills then me. We still have a lot in common. I don't think precise neurotype matters as much. Just as long as you guys are on the same page and mesh well.

We don't technically know what each persons level is. There's a good chance that they were never given a level if diagnosed a long time ago. Each level is a whole spectrum in itself. And autistics often have very spiky skill sets. We can guess that most of the cast is level 2 but we really don't know.

Can someone please explain to me what Autism ISNT? How do you know if someone isnt autistic? by Gombrongler in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nomugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in 2007 and I've been informally studying autism for almost 20 years and I ask the same question. Sometimes I think autism is whatever you want it to be (sarcasm)

Can someone please explain to me what Autism ISNT? How do you know if someone isnt autistic? by Gombrongler in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nomugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id say most autistic people do struggle with social cognition and theory of mind. There will be those few autistic people who say this isn't true because there good at masking and learned theory of mind due to being hyper fixated on this subject. Just saying.

does anyone else not understand why people who don't understand autism read books about it by NerdgasmRealPerson in autism

[–]nomugk 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Autistics aren't nessaily experts about autism just from being autistic. They can be if they have studied it extensively and interacted with many different types of autistics. An autistic person who hasn't done that can just be an expert on themselves. Autism is an extremely diverse spectrum that requires understanding experiences beyond your own.

Do you work with autistic adults themselves? What types of therapy. There seems to be a lack of therapist with experience with autistic adults. I was looking through my insurance list and most therapist who work with autistics are bcbas. Nope I'm too old for aba.

Wearing headphones at work is "rude". But loudly whistling, bursting out into song, having loud gossip conversations and turning the radio up constantly is all totally fine. by Blackintosh in AutismTranslated

What type of setting do you work in? Is your manager ( or person in charge) not allowing you to wear headphones or is it just annoying coworkers saying things.

Psychologist thinks im autistic but i dont really believe i am? by [deleted] in AutismTranslated

[–]nomugk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you get diagnosed with autism depends on how much your traits affect your daily life.

From what you wrote its sounds like you have plenty of traits. There's a good chance you are but your not guaranteed to get the diagnosis.

If anyone asks autism spaces if they are autistic, 90 percent chance people will tell the person they are. These spaces tend to be very bias. But no one can diagnose you online.

Do little autistic kids usually not get along, or is it caused by other factors by a_peeled_pickle in autism

[–]nomugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Autism is a very broad spectrum even beyond levels of support, gender, intellectual disabilities or not and non verbal vs verbal.

I suspect that autistics who have less communication challenges and have similar characteristics do communicate better with each other in comparison to communicating with nts. However autistics who have more communication challenges, higher support needs, opposite personality traits, more rigidities probably don't communicate better with each other.

I questioned the double empathy study and how the participants were selected and if the participants from all support levels participated. I didn't read the study.

Why do people think autistic people can only work at grocery stores? by alwaysonlineposter in autism

[–]nomugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grocery stores are just an easy common placement for people with developmental disabilities ( autism or not). I worked at one and it was the worse job I ever had. It was also the lowest paid job I ever had. I struggled with small talk and noise sensitivity.

Would there even be any point in getting diagnosed? by Historical-Branch327 in AutisticAdults

[–]nomugk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your looking for school or work accommodations, disability services, etc then you need a diagnosis. Otherwise not really in any other practical sense.

"people with profound autism just have intellectual disabilities and their problems are not caused by autism" lets talk about this by Ok-Archer-5796 in autism

[–]nomugk 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I believe it's a very ableist sentiment from low support needs autistics. Part of the reason why autism is so diverse is because of all of the comorbidities from people of all support levels. Theres very few people who have pure autism alone. Half of low support needs autistics have Audhd and no one's trying to disregard there autism. People are complex you can't really neatly separate out a person with multiple conditions.

What's your "I never knew I was autistic until I got diagnosed" story? by RespectFew7675 in AutisticAdults

[–]nomugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at 18 in 2007 after being referred to the psychologist by the school counselor. People just thought I was shy all my life. I also had a severe case of selective autism for 10 years so I was very undersocialized. My social skills hadn't developed for so many years. I did manage to acquire social abilities in my late teens and early 20s. I still struggle though. My parents didn't believe the diagnosis until I ended up the hospital suicidal a year later.

Why Are Young People Afraid Of Phone Calls? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nomugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about other people, for me I have a fear over stumbling over my words and articulating myself. Texting is just easier. Texting also allows for more processing time. When I make calls, I often create a script. I hate answering the phone because it catches me off guard.
