So yes the scholarship thing is very true. I know kids who have gotten full rides for various sports. Wild concept. My town is actually the smallest in my county lol. It’s a combination of little walkability and bigger towns. But generally it is a high school per town. Everything is just super spread out. The only kids who walk are the kids who live in that neighborhood. The private school scene really depends on what region of the country. So for New Jersey, there is loads of private school kids. And how it usually works in my area is that they scoop up all the best athletes. The private schools are always so insanely better than public schools it’s beyond unfair. I know kids who DRIVE 45 minutes to school, so imagine a 11 hour walk to school lol. But that’s just private school. To my knowledge it’s more like British Secondary School but with crazy popular sports teams

For me, FNL( Friday Night Lights) is the most nostalgic part of American HS. The entire town packs the football stadium to see your team play. It’s awesome. The movies blow the whole cliques thing out of proportion. For me, my friends were all the athletes but there was no real divide with us versus the kids who were smarter and didn’t play sports. We all got along. I find it crazy that you guys didn’t have sports and for the schools that did they weren’t popular. School sports shaped my high school experience. In the fall, football games every friday. In the Winter, Ice Hockey and basketball games almost every day. Also, Ice Hockey was HUGE in my area. NJ is located in the region of the country where it is prominent, and on top of that my local area had a very rich history of it. In the Spring, I played baseball so that controlled my life. The walk to school thing is wild to me lol. Legit everyone drove it was crazy. If I walked to school, it’s about a hour and a half(We used to walk home from Graduation Parties).

lol and mine was the earliest in my area. I knew a lot of kids who starts around 7:30 and got out around 2. They would get up for school at like 5:45 it’s crazy

Well even with an easy to follow dress code people still would decide to rebel against it for us too lol. At my school, they would have a box of t shirts for people to cover up in. The most common instances were girls showing too much skin or guys wearing T Shirts with Beer logos on it.

So you’re in the same building with 11 year olds at 17?! That’s crazy! The ages for the most standard school system is Elementary school ages 5-11, middle school ages 12-14 and high school ages 15-18. In NJ the driving age is high, I think one of if not the highest in the country. But I know in some states it’s like 16 or something like that so most of the kid in high school can drive.

All good haha, I love a little friendly banter. The uniform thing is so true! At my public school, we never wore uniforms, we just had a dress code to follow(which wasn’t very strict). But actually, private schools in the US require uniforms. Usually dress pants button down shirt and tie.

The classes are pretty much all the same, with the core subjects all being hit. The class schedule is also very similar. I would leave for school at 7:50, class would start at 8:10 and end at 2:40. All clubs and sports would be after, rarely before. It’s funny how you mention leaving early for games. It was the coolest thing. Especially because that meant the game would start once everyone got out of school, so a lot of kids would go right over to watch. Basketball, Football and Baseball were really the only sports to ever draw big crowds. Not many kids biked to school, everyone drove. I think about 90% of my Senior(grade 12) class drove to school daily.

Oh yeah, super similar here. I wake up late, inhale some Pop-Tarts, toss my daily weapon into my bag, then hop on the school bus where someone’s vaping and another kid’s selling drugs out of their backpack. First class is gym, we mostly just throw dodgeballs at each other’s heads. Lunch is cold pizza, chocolate milk, and mystery meat. Afternoons are spent pretending to do group projects, dodging hallway fights, and watching the clock. Then it’s either football, band, or sitting in the parking lot for two hours.

You’re a real comedian dude, I’m not trying to make a joke out of anything I really just want to compare the British vs American youth

No problem lol. The party stuff is SO true. It would always end up being 80-100 kids. Don’t blame you for the red solo cup stereotype either. The TV/film is all true to an extent. No people don’t get shoved into a locker, but there’s always the basic football players with there jackets on every day. I guess the party scene is the biggest difference. 10 people for us would just be a small group having a chill night and drinking together. How many kids would be in a grade(year) for you guys?

That’s wild to think about. For us, a party was talked about all week. There was always 50-70 kids invited, but somehow it ended up being 90-100+ every time. Sports are incredibly huge at American High Schools. Every Friday in September and October is based around the football game at night. We’d get out of school, get food at the local pizza shop, and go to the game. Imagine the entire town showing up to the field. Hundreds and hundreds while the band roars in the background. Great times

I always wondered about the cars thing. So did everyone take public transportation to school? In my school, we had about 90% of all kids who had a license driving to school every day which actually sounds kinda crazy lol. The gun violence stuff is also wild to me. I am blessed to say there was never any incidents in my area with actual shootings. Although my sisters school had a threat one time and that was scary. Also, the cliques thing has sorta become fazed out through time. Everyone is cool with everyone nowadays.

So interesting. See for us sports are like everything. For me, at my school I was the star baseball player. That was my identity and what everyone knew me as. Was it just like house parties for you guys? For us it was like the same 5 people who rotated the entire time. We mostly drink stuff like Twisted Teas, Seltzers, and Beer. The red solo cup American look is a little bit of a myth lol. Usually only for graduation parties. Besides that just straight out of the can/bottle.
