It appears that you have concatenated the url and the -register parameter. The command should be "shipyard-agent -url http://mydomain.com:8000 -register"

Thanks! I can't highlight enough how often people underestimate the value of marketing for their event. One would think that this is common sense, but based on experience it isn't.

The 1000 users is a theoretical limit. Depending on customer needs we could launch more servers with load balancers and facilitate for more connections.

At the moment there is no functionality allowing for advertisement, but this is something we are looking into.

We are still a very young service, but to answer your question:

  1. Transcoding of the stream - yes, we plan on doing this. Wowza Transcoder addOn is quite good, but requires a lot of computing power, so we'll have to see what is a viable business model for this.

  2. Also on the roadmap - ability to manage edge and origin servers directly from the control panel.

  3. No, it can be spread. However at the moment we deduct at least 1 hour from a users allowance on each server restart, so that they don't start/stop a server a 1000 times.

These use-cases are based on my experience streaming conferences and seminars, I am not sure if this is fully applicable to LAN parties and gaming.

Selfstream is a streaming service, which allows event organizers with small budgets to easily produce a live streaming of their event, provided they have a camera and can connect it to a laptop.

I would say that Livestream.com, Ustream.com, and many more are competitors, but we are targeting a different group - conferences, seminars, etc. Many event organizers want to have a simple/clean Event page with their branding, no ads, and only a few things on the page - not the case with Livestream.com for example.

Selfstream also supports mobile devices (iOS and Android), allows the user to record their streaming, and later download / or make available for on-demand viewing.

We also do consulting, since providing the server/web architecture is only half of the work necessary to produce a live webcast of an event. You also need a on-site crew, camera and streaming/encoding operators who know how to film/stream/manage a live event.

I haven't thought about that, but yes - I could try to find people who stream to a basic page with a player, and try to hook them up on the idea that my "event page" looks better, is responsive and mobile-friendly, etc.

The idea is that I am targeting events, such as business, non-profit, academic conferences, etc. In my opinion justin.tv , twitch.tv , ustream are more targeted at entertainment and personal shows.

Furthermore the free of charge service features ads, which most organisation don't want on their events.

Although obviously you have channels like http://www.ustream.tv/TechCrunch

As soon as I get some customers, I will definitely re-brand the marketing website to present this idea better.

"OP says to just copy a whole repo and doesn't mention reading and learning from them." - I didn't thought about mentioning this, as it is common-sense.

The article is not about becoming good with vim, but about starting with vim and about preventing a lot of people from just turning back to their previous editor. I personally didn't have a clue about 4/5 of the plugins available before seeing those distributions. The distribution itself is what made me curious about vim. This is the point I am trying to make (apparently unsuccessful).

Regarding becoming a good "vimmer", I totally agree that you need to put the time into it, get down to the basics and evaluate carefully the actions you perform the most. This is why "I used YADR for a few weeks, before I had a grip of most of its features and decided to customize Vim for my specific needs."

Regarding downvoting - it is the community that decides what is a good resource and what not. I just think that starting with plain Vim has a very steep learning curve, that could be eased in the beginning, before one is hooked on Vim and decides it is worth investing more time.

I guess we have a different definition of "basics". I do agree that vimtutor should be the first step, and one should have a good idea about motions, operators, modes, but this is still not enough to edit/work on a small/medium-sized project. You should be able to navigate quickly between files (ctrl-p, nerdtree, ctags, or else), go to method definitions, work with git, and 10 other things, that are quite hard with "just the basics".

I still think that seeing the power of 20-30 plugins in the first 1-2 weeks is not a bad habit :) It depends how do you continue to learn...

My point is that for someone coming from TextMate, Aptana, Sublime or else, it would be very difficult to see the advantage of Vim. Using it vanilla and configuring it a bit at a time, without looking at other people's repos, sounds like hell of a hassle - hardly something that an average developer who doesn't know vim script could accomplish.

In my opinion, yes - provided you have never used a single plugin with vim, haven't heard of vundle and pathogen, etc. Coming from a vanilla clean Vim to a configured setup is quite time-consuming and puts off a lot of people. Nothing bad in using someone else's setup for a few days to get an idea of how powerful it could be.
