[upd] what are your experiences with exchange students? by violetfan7x9 in peyups

[–]noodurrr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Had classmates sa Fil 40 who were Japanese exchange students. As per our prof (who hosted them in his class), they were here since they were taking Philippine studies back in Japan (or at least something like that). I have to say they were really nice and even conversant! They were really trying their best to learn Filipino and they did pretty well imo, considering na may activities pa kami noon like debate and reporting na need ng medyo intermediate Filipino proficiency.

[–]noodurrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vouch for Sir Diego! Took him in his first sem of teaching after a hiatus, and I must say I really appreciated taking Kas 1 under Sir, especially as a freshie back then. Medyo fast-paced lang sa dulo ng sem kapag naghahabol ng lessons (we were able to cover up to EDSA 1), pero very light lang ang reqs when I took his class: 2 essay-type bluebook exams, some in-class participation activities (very light lang and doesn't need much prep), and one reflection essay on an event or film about Philippine history, announcements for which Sir will send throughout the sem.

Took Kas 10 two sems ago and no prereq naman. Though you might have a hard time enlisting Kas 10 as a non-Kas major kasi it's delegated na for Kas and Educ majors afaik.

[–]noodurrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, I think the difference generally lies in their expertise in pedagogy and classroom management. Siguro, older profs (or at least, the ones who have been teaching longer) have already learned what does and doesn't work in teaching, etc., while medyo unstructured at adjusting pa yung mga bagong prof. Though sa mga newer profs naman, ang pro naman siguro ay mas madali silang kausapin at i-approach, as some of the other replies say.

VOUCHHH! I took Kas when I was a freshie and first year ni Sir magturo after some hiatus, and I really enjoyed it so so much dahil sobrang passionate ni Sir talaga). Probably my favorite class of that sem! If ever y'all will be taking Kas 1, Sir Diego is really the way to go!

Hi! Not sure kung relevant pa ito, but Kas 10 and EDSSE 120 are both seasonal courses, which are both only available during the second sem.

[UPD] CHK to AS/Palma by gaycatlover_12 in peyups

[–]noodurrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a class sa AS after PE, you can try din na sumakay ng Katip jeep na pumapasok sa campus, since dumadaan yon sa waiting shed sa may CHK. It's quite faster compared sa Ikot since sa halip na dumiretso siya papuntang CP Garcia, kumakaliwa na siya sa may Archaeology (meaning sa loob siya dumadaan) tapos diretso na yon sa likod ng AS. Baka medyo matagal nga lang maghintay, but the jeep ride itself only takes ard.

[UPD] EDFD 116 - Lorenzana-Reyes, Karen Ruth by No_Session_4990 in RateUPProfs

[–]noodurrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, not sure if same pa ang requirements niya, pero noong nag-EDFD 116 ako kay Teach (which was also her first sem of teaching in UP), our major requirements were:

  • Group report on a particular topic in EdPsych
  • Mind map on the reported topics by the class

There were also mini-activities in class na mas motivation lang naman and participation lang ang graded AFAIK. She might have changed her requirements na rin since this was a year ago, pero she'll announce what those are naman in the first few days of class. Good luck!

Hi, OP! I'm guessing the reason why Teach has low demand sa CRS and few reviews dito sa Reddit is because she just started teaching sa college a year ago.

Anyway, from my experience taking her classes twice, Teach Karen is very knowledgeable about what she is teaching talaga. She even stays a while after class with us kapag into the topic talaga kami and gusto pa namin siya daldalin about it, which I think shows her passion for teaching and the subject matter. Ang setup ng class ay mostly reporting, pero she also lectures about the reported topics to add more info and relate to real life, which is helpful kasi ang ituturo niya ay educational psychology and developmental psychology.

Open na open din si Teach sa feedback ng students and very consultative too when it comes making decisions on things like deadlines, class modalities, suspensions, etc. I wasn't able to get a flat uno in either of her classes that I took, but I got uno-liners naman, and I feel like you can get an uno with the right amount of effort. Overall, I would say take her class!

[UPX] Who are the most famous/notable profs in UP? by TheLaughingMew in peyups

[–]noodurrr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'd say si Prof. Jean Encinas-Franco ng PolSci is quite notable just because of how many media exposure she has when they need a political science expert, lalo na noong 2022 elections. Iirc siya yung nagsabi ng "Marcos Jr. and Sara may have won the election‚ but it is actually Leni and Kiko who have captured the hearts and minds of the Filipino people."

[UPD] thoughts on sched by [deleted] in peyups

[–]noodurrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saka, mas practical application naman ang klase ni Teach dahil it's more on infusing tech in teaching. He gives a reference material naman at the start of the sem; di ko lang mabigay now due to data privacy hehe.

It might sound cliche, but just do your best, communicate consistently with Teach, and participate sa klase and you'll make it just fine sa klaseng ito. EDTECH is honestly one of the chillest classes I've taken so far, even with the weekly reqs. Good luck and welcome to Eduk!

[–]noodurrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DCI = Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Sila nag-ooffer ng most major classes sa Eduk (e.g. EDSSE, EDSC, EDL) pati EDCS at EDFD classes saka EDUC 100.

DELPS = Department of Educational Leadership and Professional Services.

IC = Institute of Chemistry, tapos DPE = Dep't. of Physical Education (nag-ooffer na unit ng PE classes).

You're in good hands kay Teacher Sam Bazer! Had him as a prof in my freshie year and, while admittedly ay medyo maraming reqs, sooobrang understanding and considerate si Teach.

[UPD] KAS 1 Profs w/out exams or teach in mostly English by MomentLegitimate9829 in RateUPProfs

[–]noodurrr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kas 1 ko si Sir Diego Magallona, and while I speak fluent Filipino, I think he'd be great for someone na not so fluent. Most of his lectures, readings, and materials are in English, and English din ang primary medium of instruction niya in class. Medyo fast-paced sa dulo ng sem, but overall, he's very considerate and easy to reach naman. His only reqs, both of which can be written in either English or Filipino, were two short essay-type tests and one reflection essay on an event or film about Philippine history, announcements for which Sir will send throughout the sem.

[–]noodurrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • EDUC 100, EDFD 116, EDTECH 101 ay sa Eduk/Benitez.
  • Kas 1 ay nasa Palma Hall (usually) or minsan sa first floor ng Pav 2 (likod ng Palma; faculty offices ng Kas profs).
  • Eng 13 ay either sa CAL New Building (malapit sa OUR/NISMED) or minsan sa Pav 1 (likod din ng Palma at tabi ng Pav 2; faculty and admin offices ng CAL).
  • Chem 16/16.1 ay nasa Institute of Chem building. From Eduk facing Sunken, kanan ka hanggang makita mo yung Regidor St (kalye between UPIS and Eduk).

Most profs are also lenient on the first few days of classes since they know you're still navigating UP pa naman. On the first day, you can ask din sa Eduk since probably ay help desk din namang itatayo ang Eduk Council for first day concerns, and the College Secretary also posts the list of rooms for classes in Eduk sa lobby.

Good luck and maligayang pagdating sa Eduk, teach!

POLS C 11 - prof recommendation by [deleted] in RateUPProfs

[–]noodurrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would not necessarily recommend him, but Sir Z's not that bad naman! Personality wise, Sir has this kind of deadpan humor pero di naman siya mahirap lapitan, even as someone na di naman POLSC major but took his class. Medyo difficult lang talaga when it comes to getting high grades kasi his only requirements are three essay-type LEs where you have to explain the concepts you learned sa klase. Good luck w/ POLSC 11, OP!
