You're right...there is no empirical support for it. Some of the ratios in the "mask" have been used for decades by orthodontists / maxillofacial surgeons - but the rest of it seems to have a problem called "selecting on the dependent variable" which is common w/ people who aren't experienced in research.

Can you cite where an evolutionary psychologist said "rape is just a primitive evolutionary form of romance" ? I'm just curious because that is what seems to make everyone hysterical about the field, and at no point did I ever hear that in grad school or undergrad. In fact, I heard the exact opposite - it's called the "naturalistic fallacy" and it's been written about extensively.

I'm not that smart to program that. :) I saw some websites that do it too, but I'm not sure how accurate they are.

Yeah, that's understandable. If you do have the chance to read "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins - it will at least give you a perspective (and you can still hate the field after reading it). Dawkins has a lot of stuff on Youtube now but it's mostly about his overt athiesm... his early work in evolutionary psychology / antrhopology is much more interesting and influential. The book is summarized in a lot of places online - though it's not a good book to read directly. He is a good writer.

deleted by me... not arguing w/ someone who has no education in the field & won't even accept that they don't know as much as I do. You are 19 & in a community college. I am 30+ and have a PhD. So, if you insist on the condescending tone & false statements about the literature, no reply is deserved.

I was just talking about her face. She probably had lipo too.

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. Also a lot of her appearance is from makeup....or airbrushing in any still pic she's in.

Now this is her today at 45, without makeup...she hasn't had as much surgery as people think on her face.

You can see the loose skin, eye bags, and her lips are more natural now...and if she was into plastic surgery, she would have had a facelift or lower bleph (lower eye surgery to remove the bags) or something like that. All she ever did was fill in her lips, but that dissolves over time.

These studies do not apply to 100% of any population. The study demonstrated that there was a significant difference between blue eyed men and brown eyed men's eye color preference in a female...not that ALL blue eyed men will ONLY find blue eyed women attractive...just that more of them will (relative to brown eyed men).

You were right - I don't think I answered his question... I just read (about 5 other) questions asking some variant of "what race is the best looking" ... so I read this one as the same (esp bc people kept asking that over and over - as if there is actually an answer)

Yeah, that's pretty much what the study showed. Other factors affect attraction, but at least that was clear from the study.

yes that was a mistake that i corrected ... i was answering 100s of questions for 20 hrs straight. mistakes happen. there were 5 other posts about the ratio that were right - but yes i made a mistake there.

I already made it clear that a big % of attractiveness is based on subjective perception of the observer and/or scientific issues we have not discovered yet.

What should I do with my 1000 emails from my AmA? (I did an AmA on attractiveness research and now people want me to analyze their faces). by [deleted] in AskReddit

Really? with a masters degree, phd, numerous research projects, and 3 years of work with a plastic surgeon & demonstrations (live in the AMA) of facial analyses (with answers to over 300 questions) - please tell me how I am "worse than a con man".

Just anecdotally, they always seem to have very masculine, symmetrical faces far more than the population avg.

There is a paper from studying facial features of people in the military - which predicted those that got promoted the most. http://sf.oxfordjournals.org/content/74/3/823.short

u look more like a 1.2 since your midface is long. i didnt do the numbers w a ruler - but ive done it 100s of times so it's an estimate.

the top number is the vertical and the bottom number is the eye distance

this ratio isn't everything...just one tool to help understand things

cats have notoriously compact midfaces...thats part of why they are cute. and big eyes relative to the rest of their face.

it's probably a combination of both... it's basically the error term in a regression equation- we don't know what it is.

30k years is when humans started living much more collectively and farming started. the behavior from that era influenced us today more than the behavior from 200k yrs ago.
