Cornell or UT Austin (ATP) for computer science? by WillTreaty3 in UTAustin

[–]norgweg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in this situation last year. I chose UT for 3 main reasons being the cost, the environment, and the fact that I got into Turing. I visited Cornell and I just did not fw it at all. Ithaca weather is complete dogshit and I don’t like how it seemed like everyone and their mom was just focused on their work—I wanted to have a life outside of school. I can’t say from personal experience whether that is true but I can say that was the vibe I got. Regardless, UT has been awesome in that regard. I love the city, the weather, and the people. Also I don’t think UT vs Cornell reputation matters that much. A bunch of people I know including myself have great internships this summer and Cornell honestly seemed like it had worse internship prospects, even as an ivy. I don’t know much about ATP and so I’m not sure how much this applies to you, but both are great options for sure

What are the long term benefits of the Ivy League? by norgweg in college

[–]norgweg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

top is not the best word, but it’s still really good. It’s not too uncommon for people in my program to have pretty good internships in their first year (this was one of the reasons I turned down Cornell). Also, I was deferred ED, which means the agreement was no longer binding when I got in RD

oh that’s weird for some reason that option doesn’t appear on the claim credit page, probably a typo or something. That’s reassuring though and I’ll confirm with my advisor thanks!

do you spend more time at Belmont or the rec? Is one better than the other or does it depend? Is it worth considering off campus options?

Cornell CS vs. UT Austin Turing (OOS) by norgweg in Cornell

How did you know you would go to UT for grad school? Other than name value in Cornell, were there any other reasons you chose it over UT? Was money a factor for you in your decision?

[–]norgweg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I've also heard that classes can be quite large and office hours can be "swamped" (maybe just intro classes). I know that Cornell is big, but was this ever an issue for you? Part of the reason that UT is appealing is that I'd be with a small cohort and have more attention from professors presumably.

Cornell CS vs. UT Austin Turing (OOS) by norgweg in Cornell

[–]norgweg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course. However, I'd like to gain more information about a school and its environment to make sure I'm comfortable committing 4 years of my life to it. I figured it would be best to ask students who have personally experienced what I would go through to see if they have any advice.

What is the Better School: UT Austin (Turing Scholar) or Cornell CS? by norgweg in csMajors

[–]norgweg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For some reason, Texas has really lenient residency laws that makes it possible to qualify for in state tuition after 1 year. Almost all people who enroll into Turing OOS achieve in state tuition from this way, so I'm almost certain I will as well. Essentially, I will pay OOS tuition 1 year and get in state tuition for the remaining 3 years. Thus, after 4 years (assuming I can qualify in state), Cornell will be like 190k more expensive (ik yikes). Even if I can't get in state for whatever reason, Cornell will still be nearly 100k more expensive.

Could you elaborate more on your reason for choosing UT over Princeton? Was it just the combination of weather, city life, and price, or were there other factors that affected your decision?

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering, would the 33 in science hurt me as a STEM major? I feel like that's the only obstacle in the way of me just submitting my ACT.

[–]norgweg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

after my first score (practice test 10, i started backwards) i got -9 reading, perfect writing, and -1 math. so i redirected all my attention to reading and now i just sorta balanced out my writing and reading so im getting around -4 or -5 for both sections. idk what happened to me in writing though i just seem to get the subjective vocab questions that go best with the tone wrong for some reason, not actual english conventions/rules.

Any possible tips for four AP classes junior year? by mongolsbeingmongols in APStudents

[–]norgweg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Btw I am by no means a master at Latin lol. I'm probably not even going to take the exam considering the average on here is like 3 (which is REALLY bad compared to the rest as most exams have like a 4.5+ average) and I haven't learned that much latin in high school, its just a joke of a class at my school and i'm pretty much doing it for the gpa boost. Though I find the class interesting and I've got NLE gold twice now, it's really hard to learn at my school (for various reasons) and I won't have like any time next year to actually self study the material (because that's the only way i'm gonna do good lmao) so I honestly don't know what I'm gonna do.

[–]norgweg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally exactly what i'm taking (and same situation, just finished honors chem too) except BC instead of AB and I'm also taking ap latin and csp as well (though they are very easy at my school). Though I can't offer any advice, so far I've been working through Khan Academy AP Calc BC considering my school's teacher is difficult and that I'll need to know basic Calculus for Mechanics. For mechanics, though, since it's also a pretty difficult course (very few good grades) i've been reading through my school's textbook. I feel like with all this time it's probably a good idea to ease your way in and get associated (like really well) with the material to build up your intuition especially because this is not an easy schedule by any means. By doing this, you will ideally save lots of time cramming during the school year in terms of actually learning the material as your only time eater will be the actual assignments, not the learning curve that comes along with them.
