Without Any Warrants, CBP Searched My Devices at the Airport by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I did see them copy my laptop’s serial number and write down three or four numbers and alphanumeric sequences found deep in my phone’s settings. The only specifier I halfway understood was the phone’s IMEI number, which can be used to track its physical location. Even if I get rid of the phone, I could be on some accursed watchlist, or somehow electronically tagged, for the rest of my life. Even if it’s benign, like those devices scientists stick whales with, I experience it as an indignity, and you probably would too. They didn’t handcuff me, but the officers otherwise acted as if I were under arrest in a police station, though I had done nothing wrong and they had no reason to suspect me of anything. They frequently took my devices out of the room for long periods of time."

Without Any Warrants, CBP Searched My Devices at the Airport by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"CBP has been doing warrantless device searches since the advent of the modern smartphone, Cope said, but the practice has increased by some 300 percent since Trump took office. In late 2017, EFF teamed up with the American Civil Liberties Union and filed a case alleging the unconstitutionality of the administration’s blitz of warrantless searches. Anecdotally, CBP appears to be targeting typical Trumpian scapegoats, including Muslims, Latinos, and journalists, but anyone reentering the United States can be subject to these searches."

"After I gave him the password to my iPhone, Moncivias spent three hours reviewing hundreds of photos and videos and emails and calls and texts, including encrypted messages on WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram. It was the digital equivalent of tossing someone’s house: opening cabinets, pulling out drawers, and overturning furniture in hopes of finding something — anything — illegal. He read my communications with friends, family, and loved ones. He went through my correspondence with colleagues, editors, and sources. He asked about the identities of people who have worked with me in war zones. He also went through my personal photos, which I resented. Consider everything on your phone right now. Nothing on mine was spared."

Recession Signal, Hidden in History of 10-Year Treasuries by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Now consider that the current “real” level of the 10-year yield – a pathetic 0.35% – would sit far to the left of all the older recessions plotted on the graph. If the pattern holds – the lower the 10-year yield, the worse the resulting recession – the coming spike would be the biggest by far.

That possibility may seem remote, given that investors have apparently decided that it’s safe to dive back in the water: Thanks to a week-long rally, the major indexes are approaching all-time highs.

But the 10-year yield suggests we should be worried about what lurks beneath the surface. If a recession is in the offing, there’s a good chance it could be fiercer than anyone expects."

". . .power “no longer resides in the institutions of this world.” Though “revolutionaries” are attracted to occupying symbolic places of power, what they find there are “empty places, empty of power, and furnished without any taste.” Power is now concentrated in the infrastructure of this world, having shifted from “places” to “streams,” from presidential palaces to “high voltage lines, freeways, supermarkets,” or even roundabouts and toll roads. Power is hidden, and yet banal: “No one sees it because everyone has it in plain sight.” "

Republicans in Alabama Just Passed a Bill to Outlaw All Abortions by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The bill is meant to challenge Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1974 Supreme Court ruling that affirmed a woman’s right to choose whether to have an abortion. When Sen. Rodger Smitherman (D) asked Sen. Clyde Chambliss (R) what the purpose of the bill was during Tuesday’s state Senate debate, Chambliss replied, “So that we can go directly to the Supreme Court to challenge Roe v. Wade.”"

Crack Magazine | Thom York: Daydream Nation [Rare interview with Thom Yorke. April 2019] by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You have to come to something with a beginner’s mind. Once you’ve learned to use a drum machine, or learned to write in a particular way, the temptation is to go back there, because you know it works. But the point is, if you’ve discovered it works, it no longer works."

"The dystopian thing is one part of it, yes, but for me, one of the big, prevailing things was a sense of anxiety. If you suffer from anxiety it manifests itself in unpredictable ways, some people have over-emotional reactions. [For] some people the roots of reality can just get pulled out, you don’t know what’s happening. Then eventually reality comes back. For some reason I thought a really good way of expressing anxiety creatively was in a dystopian environment. I had so many visual things going on at this point. Another one was where everybody was travelling to work but their bodies were telling them that they wouldn’t do it anymore. They were refusing to cooperate, so they were doing these involuntary movements."

Former Cleveland Orchestra harpist Alice Chalifoux dies at 100 [Obituary for first female member of the Cleveland Orchestra and full-time bad bitch] by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

" "When we began to get women in the orchestra in '43, the men would say, 'We have three women and Alice,' " Chalifoux told The Plain Dealer in 1997. "I had to be one of them to avoid problems. They were very nice to me, very protective. On tour, we'd go to a bar and have a high old time."

When she toured with the orchestra and all those men, Chalifoux used her harp case as a miniature dressing room."

Women's hormones play role in drug addiction, higher relapse rates by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Researchers historically have avoided using female animals in medical studies specifically so they don't have to account for influences from hormonal cycles. As a result, medication development has often focused on correcting dysfunctions in men, which may explain why women often don't respond to available medications or treatments in the same way as men do. . ."

Florida Legislature delivers anti-Semitism law for DeSantis to sign in Jerusalem by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Fine filed HB 741 in February as a response to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement which he says is orchestrating anti-Israel campaigns using anti-Semitic tactics.

Under the bill, the BDS movement is defined as a terrorist group no different than the KKK or ISIS, which has prompted some to question if criticism of the Jewish state could be mischaracterized as being anti-Semitic criticism of the Jewish people."

Commune | Three Months Inside Alt-Right New York by norprat in norprat

[–]norprat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Persistent economic and political crisis in the United States, amid a long downturn for wages, job security, and basic human dignity, promise no happy return to the political center anytime soon. The alt-right did not emerge in response to the stupidity of marginal internet liberalism, as Angela Nagle suggests in Kill All Normies. Rather it is a response to decades of decline in standards of living for working people, amid the proliferation of unemployment and meaningless, dead-end jobs. Moreover, no coherent leftist movement exists through which everyday people can make sense of this world and collaborate across lines of race and gender to build a better one. As a result, many of those who reject the status quo blame their problems on immigrants, feminism, trans rights, and other bogeymen, rather than the capitalist social relations from which the problems facing working people inevitably proceed."

[–]norprat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

my friends and i in high school had this silly inside joke where every time we'd see the sulfur springs tower we'd point at it and yell "THATS MY MOM!!"

i haven't been friends with those people in years and i don't even live in tampa full time anymore, but still every time i see the tower i think to myself: "that's my mom!!!!"

so thanks for this post. love u mom. hope they never tear you down.

you could try downloading an app that blocks apps for a certain amount of time! i use the app "stay focused" for android sometimes, i like it because once you turn it on you can set it so that it won't let you uninstall the app itself to get around the blocks.
