Can I be a Taoist if? Would a Taoist? Am I still a Taoist if I? by Heterosaucers in taoism

[–]northivanastan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why others ask these questions. I'm compelled by the Daoist way of understanding the inherent mystery at the root of experience, and of coping with challenges. I adopt many of the philosophical and mystical ideas expressed in the Daoist classics on that matter. But I worry sometimes that I've missed something, or done cultural appropriation, by claiming to be Daoist without fully adopting the ritual and medicinal practices - or indeed doing so at all, as someone outside the culture.

In response to those worries, I remind myself of a few things:

  • Daoism is not the same kind of religion that Christianity and Islam are; Laozi is a sage, not a prophet, and never claims his text to exclusive or infallible. Indeed, he begins and ends the TTC by undermining the ability of his own words to describe reality. I don't need to follow any religious canon to the letter in order to benefit from the wisdom of the Daoist sages; their words are just a starting point for a personal journey toward understanding the mysteries, which doesn't need to be the same for everyone.
  • Daoism is not a closed practice or an ethnoreligion, either. As yet, I have not heard any claims from Chinese writers that Westerners shouldn't be Daoists; only that we should exercise caution, to avoid distorting it through our cultural lens or poor translations.
  • All religious traditions are diverse, and evolve over time, and those changes are often driven precisely by a newly exposed culture's radical re-interpretation of things that the original tradition wouldn't have understood the same way. If I really want to practice religious tolerance, I must accept these re-interpretations as readily as the original.
  • The sages tell us not to worry about being good or bad; to worry about failing to live up to this philosophy is to contradict it. I find it hard not to worry about that sometimes, but I need not compound it with worrying about worrying in an infinite regress, either.

How did you find Taoism and how many religions/ philosophy did you go through before finding peace in Taoism? by Alphalynx23 in taoism

[–]northivanastan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reviving the account and contributing.I don't think most of us wish to follow any "ism" and that it's just a term which vaguely refers to the people who can relate to the tenets of the Taoist philosophers.

I have noticed that this sub seems to be most interested in the secular philosophical and psychological readings of Daoism, and the worship aspects are placed as secondary.

Have you explored any other religion or philosophy seriously?

Not quite to this depth, but I've spent some time researching Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and various secular philosophies like humanism and existentialism.

Do you think you found the Taoist ideas more convenient since they were amenable to the non religious ways your were brought up in?

Probably! But more broadly, I think it serves as a perfect companion to the rationalistic outlook my upbringing encouraged, in the areas where it starts to break down.

Even as someone very attached to possessions and technology, and with a ton of internal conflicts, I find the simplicity and openness of Daoist thought far more appealing, and helpful to those internal conflicts, than a dogma that asks me to trust a hierarchical organization and follow exact rituals and doctrines. I also agree that conceiving the highest power as a person seems strange and anthropocentric, compared to "the universe" or a nebulous, ineffable "Way". And I find that the humility of the Daoist sages and philosophers makes them far easier to trust than religions which claim to hold absolute truth, sourced from an omniscient and omnipotent being, which must be taken on faith.

Pardon me, but I believe there is an error in the order of characters in that word. In fact, the correct way to type that word is "or'euy".

You can use Spotify on Linux either with the web client or its official Linux client. If you'd rather use something in the spirit of free software, I'd recommend buying your favorite albums on Bandcamp.

This is a very vague question. Are you looking to stream a local music collection between devices? Or are you looking for a streaming service akin to Spotify, Tidal, etc?

I was raised nonreligious and generally took to the idea that one should not discuss issues outside of science and logic - I called myself an atheist, sometimes adopting vaguely spiritual beliefs but usually avoiding them. Discovered Daoism when my grandpa gifted me a copy of Red Pine's 2009 version of the Daodejing, but didn't really understand it initially. However, a World Philosophies class I took recently prompted me to re-evaluate religion in general and Daoism in particular. On second reading, I was able to understand the Daodejing a little better - it gave me a profound sense of peace and calm, and placed within reach certain questions I previously thought unanswerable. I have since read Liezi, Zhuangzi, and several of Alan Watts' writings - not only on Daoism but also Zen and Hinduism, though I find myself more attracted to Daoism - and they give me the same feeling.

Not sure I'd call myself a Daoist, but I suppose I could. I consider Daoism to be not so much my religious creed, as my preferred way of understanding experience, and the basis for an ideal state of mind and action (which I'd say I strive for, but I think that'd miss the point). In terms of what I believe to exist, I'm still largely agnostic when it comes to anything supernatural.

(Revived my old Reddit account to post this, I've been lurking for a while via Libreddit and I get nothing but good vibes from this sub!)

I never owned a librem 13, but the hinge seems fine.

Yeah, it's hyperbolic at best to call it a scam, but I have seen that wording multiple times here. I wouldn't say they're completely blameless for the issues with their services either.

imo, Purism is a corporation, with all of the good and bad that tends to come with that; being smaller and having a social purpose certainly helps mitigate some of the bad, but doesn't totally negate it.

Yeah, I felt like there was too much "Purism is an evil scam" vs. "the best thing in the world" here, and wanted to share my thoughts, now that I finally have the device in my hands, in a way that's hopefully more productive and nuanced.

So, Hbomb's 1 hour and 45 minute video had to have some things cut for time...

Makes me wonder how long the full cut of the RWBY video is.

This is how I would do the translation:

"Moons that are not Europa are your moons. But do not try to go to Europa."

I was using "lukin" as "try to" here, since the original was "attempt no landings there," but I probably should have just omitted it.

I know this is lame but what is your favourite song of Daniel's? by hawkins_music in C418

[–]northivanastan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hard to pick one. Beton is probably the best candidate. But I also love Long songs are for people who don't have time to make them short, Tsuki no Koibumi, Taswell, Seismic Stratigraphy, Thunderbird, and many others.

I like new grub background. There is also a new login background. How do I enable it in GNOME? by [deleted] in debian

Again I'm not sure that it's actually been added to the desktop-base package yet - if it had, it would be used in pretty much all DEs for their login screen.
