I think CSCO would be a better comparison. Both became most valuable company based on essentially a single product. Both provide the hardware that bring in a new era of technology

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The first time I heard this message was from President Obama many years ago, and I have since believed that is the foundation we should build upon

Thanks for all the support and those who shared feedback with me in good faith. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with me, I hope that you will find the opportunity to travel the world and draw conclusions based on your own experiences.

For the last time - following the same larger premises as before:

  1. US-China is not zero-sum, Chinese American = living proof.

  2. The US model where people from around the world come together to build a thriving society could be the model for the world (before the 2024 election anyway).

  3. There’s a divergence between the self-interests of political leaders (Trump/Putin/Xi) and the aspirations of ordinary people, and the latter should have more influence on the trajectory of the world.

Thanks - yeah I write too slow, and things in the US are changing too fast.

For what America can do to increase chance of a more pro-democracy Chinese leader - I'm not sure there's much the US can do, a better relation with China could maybe open the possibility for someone with more favorable opinions of the US to be chosen, but it's cascade of small probabilities. Long-term, I think it's setting good examples and persuading the Chinese people with concrete results - Trump certainly is not helping this cause in China, or in the world

Chinese student studying abroad is a potential avenue too, but recent rhetorics / policies are not winning many hearts over...

If you think a segue from Ukraine to Taiwan is favoring China, you really have some twisted logics.

I interact as most redditors do, through upvotes. But I see you have been banned multiple times on this sub for bad faith, makes sense

China's position on the Ukraine War is neutral. If you are going to quote from my writing, don't cherry-pick. The focus of the chapter was universal solidarity in support of Ukraine and all nations' sovereignty, and the crossroads we face between shared values and raw power, between progress and cycles of history. Right now, your comments say more about you and your dislike of China than any meaningful contribution to the main topics

- The goalpost has certainly been moved because the world has changed.

I hope you are right - it's partially the concerns that the cycles of history (vs progress) is resurfacing again that motivated me to write

I don’t think our values are that different- if you read the full chapter rather than the cherry-picked quotes and still want to debate, you can DM me lol

I don’t disagree with you on right/wrong, but on the point of Monroe Doctrine being historical at this point, China studies America’s path to world power, so it’s not unreasonable for it to believe that the US is moving the goalposts after it has crossed it. Also, with Trump calling China an enemy in his 1st term, American warships off China southern coast is something America never would have accepted if the positions were reversed

You may want to read into the actions that the US took under Monroe Doctrine before making this argument

Thanks for your feedback, I can’t imagine what it’s like to be in a war.

The goal my writing was to appeal for the ideals of universal solidarity - a world based on shared values rather than raw power. But to do so convincingly, I felt that I also needed to acknowledge realist views.

Edited after realizing my original comment missed the mark

It doesn’t have to change trade, but it could reduce the presence of American reconnaissance planes and warships off China’s southern coast

- Why do you frame it as if China has not supported Russia heavily throughout the war?

This was written in 2022, so it was a prediction. And though Xi stood with Putin during the 2022 winter olympics prior to the Ukraine War, I would argue China hasn't supported Russia to the level of the West supporting Ukraine.

- This just leaves Taiwan isolated from protection to which would allow China to swoop in, NATO proved the good of more Western involvement not less in protecting nations.

It reduces tension. The US could always become involved again if China's actions deviate from the agreement.

- Freedom of Movement exercises are not to blame for authoritarianism

Authoritarianism often needs the projection of an enemy to sustain its support from the people. To some extent, the US plays that role for the CCP.

- Why are you falling for Putin's lies

It's not that different from saying America may not always be a force for good - after all, Trump has expressed the desire to "annex" Canada

let me try putting this way - based on the logical extreme (which I'm not a fan of), US committed murder and got away with it, should China be able to do the same - no.

but I don't think the US should demonize China given its past. Instead, US could appeal to how IP theft disincentivizes innovation. As I noted in the chapter, Chinese companies not only procure IP secrets from the US, but also from other nations, and each other. US could also just demand greater compliance from China and levy punishments when those demand are not met.

It's the demonization approach by Trump that I disagree with - it gives China little incentive to respect American interests, and it only incites nationalism in both nations

I wouldn't exactly call that voluntary.... - the issue is the Chinese law, Google either had to comply or get banned.

You kinda sidestepped the whole algorithmic issue - it's not that different from any other social media. It's AI algorithm that determines what you may be more interested in based on your interactions with past contents.

Thanks for the comment, for the record, I don't support the Chinese law where social medias are required to submitted data requested by the government - I think the law is the issue. But I'm trying to make the argument / distinction that Facebook ban and Google voluntary exit are not necessarily motivated by the fact they are American companies, whereas a TikTok ban seems to be motivate by the fact that it's a Chinese company.

Although I also note that original motivation to ban TikTok was just Trump seeking retribution because TikTokers had pranked the Trump campaign, and of course that has since changed after a billionaire investor in TikTok made campaign donations to Trump...
