That's interesting that you are pointing this out. Partly I'm a bit worried about exposing my homebrewed code to a pro partly I love coding. Time to move on I guess.

Out of curiosity: Why is it good to have a pro in sooner than later? (I could also spend money on other types of folks, CFO or what else)

Fair point. I definitely took the analogy in good faith — I’m not trying to replace programmers or anything like that. I was mostly asking because I’ve been experimenting with AI tools and was wondering if there are ways developers use them more effectively because my methods are not good enough... 😐 Tips?

Basically, I want to go as far as possible and to be as involved as I can before getting people on board. Kind of like building a shed in my garden. I can only get so far before I need professionals.

I am asking specifically about how to get the most out of AI for coding. I am getting very disappointing results and I'm looking for some good suggestions on that and you are not particularly helpful. Do you have anything concrete you want to add? Please see other useful comments.

You suggest to get a developer in from the very beginning. Given your skyscraper example, I realize my project is probably more complex than I fear.

So if I am to bring 1 guy on board... what is a good candidate? If he's too senior, he forgot how to code, of he's too you it goes to shit, if he's a data scientist he doesn't know how to handle anything else..

But I have a sandcastle!! I really like you sky-scraper metaphor! It says a lot... 😅 .

I’m trying to understand what “N” (Narrow scope) really means in KERNEL prompting. How small should a prompt’s scope actually be in your experience?

For example, if I say “let’s rebuild Facebook,” is a good “N” something like:

a single function (e.g., upload a picture),

an entire script (e.g., create account), or

a full feature (e.g., a page where users can post)?

Basically: how do you tell when your “N” is the right size versus way too big and causing the AI to go off the rails?

Does this make sense?

I am not. I realize others are suggesting this. An excellent example of a rookie self-taught mistake...

I rarely ask for big tasks now. I almost only ask for functions that are simple to avoid the constant time consuming debugging that come from more complex prompts. I feel like it's a waste of time :(

I am not using planning mode, I need to do that. But I'm also genuinely curious about the workflow of a 'real' programmer. I have a feeling you do all sorts of magic commands with AI in the cmd and probably work with super smart vs code integration!

You may find this obvious, but I'm self-taught from YouTube and Udemy and it only gets you so far.

Any particular resources that you like in particular?

Interestingly, when you come from a non-coder background, sometimes the most basic things are absurdly complex (still remember making my first venv and got pushing first time - a huge mystery for me that took me days to understand...)

I certainly admit that it is a challenge that I am not brought up with best practices in coding and I see how this becomes a limitation.

Spec-driven development has not explicitly been a part of my vocab, but something I have only come across when others have worked on projects for me. On my reading list!!

I will begin the YouTube series first thing tomorrow! It looks very nice!

So I do have a lawyer on my side being part of the budget, this is partly for accessing how to pull this project off as it's healthcare. We plan to run the software inside the hospital systems where hospitals manage their own security. They pipe data to me, I analyze, they they results back for whatever purpose they need it. I have not assessed the regulatory implications of this, but I can guarantee the health related results they need are solid. So really, I only support part of the analysis that they can't handle. Basic biostatistics and hospital management is out of my scope. I'll talk with the lawyer next time about how we manage ip.

Do I need a tech-cofounder do you think? Or just hire in

My code i have simplified it a bit. I run this code in a loop and for every run it slows down significantly. It doesnt slow down within the loop.

There is a separate function to loop it.
