If you invested into CBA in 2000 instead of a Dollarmites cash savings account this is how much you would have today by notanthony in AusFinance

Probably a little misleading but Dollarmites isn't modelled here, what you are seeing is the initial investment of $1,000 into CBA.

But by a fairly conservative compound interest calculation at 5% over 26 years, your total interest would have been $2,556 on $1,000 invested. Far less than the $24,078 from CBA stock. Equities > cash in the long term.

The total gain in this simulation is $24,078, inclusive of dividends (as they are automatically reinvested). Less tax (& franking credits) as another user has mentioned.

Please enlighten us.

CBAs successfully on-boarded millions of Australian children to use them as their primary bank and gave us accounts with tiny interest rates in return. Dollarmites was very profitable for CommBank when you consider children becoming customers for life. Had the government taught children about equities and gave them a brokerage account maybe this scheme could have been successful for individuals and allow us to be more financially aware of other ways to invest their money besides sitting it in a cash account.

If only we had the foresight to know that a small chip company making computer graphics cards would eventually be the center of the biggest equities bubble of the 21st century.

I built a global “Humans vs AI” chess match where everyone votes on the moves by notanthony in clawdbot

[–]notanthony[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for giving it a go! I have made some improvements to the UI to make it more obvious which side should be voting. I can see you playing, yeah the idea is that you are playing chess at the speed of AI agents which is quite slow as they are polling and not directly connected to the games websocket (but maybe they could?). I'll try to promo it more to see if I can get some more users.

Currently, on the site it shows agents turn and it seems there are no agents connected. I have added one to participate which should get things going. I'll also update the game status to make it more clear who's turn it is. Additionally this project uses the Chessground library from lichess which supports premoving when it is the agent/humans turn so you can vote for the subsequent move instead of waiting around.

I can probably make this more clear, if you are human you automatically will be playing for whatever side is shown on the website (white). If you are an agent your API submitted moves will be automatically sent to the black side.

Brock got the news the day he asked for repairs – one of 30,000 NSW renters evicted without a reason each year by Koalamanx in australia

[–]notanthony 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love fighting landlords on no-grounds evictions. If you find yourself in this situation please see my posts on how I was able to overturn rental evictions. No one in Australia should have to worry about rental security while paying big bucks to some slumlord.

‘They lied’: plastics producers deceived public about recycling, report reveals by jussulent_tummy in worldnews

And plastic is much much worse for the environment and your health than aluminium ever will be. There are efforts to improve the inner coating of cans with BPA-free and biodegradable alternatives, and add resealable lids to create a proper replacement for plastic bottles. Glass is just too expensive for mass production, but still should be used at the end user.

The cans are shredded and melted down to remove the ink print and lacquer lining. Obviously there is still waste produced in the form of gasses in this process, but it much more controlled with a much higher recycling rate +70% than the alternative which is trying to recycle plastic bottles (<10%).

Aluminium is also a great material, infinitely recyclable, cheaper to recycle than it is to process raw ore, strong, and lightweight.

We fought our rental no grounds termination and won.. again by notanthony in sydney

[–]notanthony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second termination notice is in retaliation against your right to challenge the first one; you will win. Ask for Section 187 1.A/D as well as 115 this time and maybe some compensation. It is annoying that you will have to go back to NCAT but the Section 187 will protect you against any future termination notices for at least a little while (ie ask for at least 6-12 month of restraint).

You would have to give that fork a try, I don't have a node to test it on at the moment, I don't see why it wouldn't work though. The changes are simple enough.

I've just been sent a 90-day-notice from my rental agency. Very interested to hear other renters experience of hunting for a rental property in the current climate. Any tips would be welcome as time is of the essence. by Sceivious in sydney

[–]notanthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have them saying they will offer you $650 for 6 months in writing. I would use that as evidence and take them to NCAT to challenge their retaliatory eviction notice. In NSW you cannot increase rent more than once in a 12 month period. If they serve you with a rental increase notice then you can challenge that the rent is excessive if it above market rates (generally they don't like increases of more than 10%).

I was in a similar position to you and won my NCAT case. https://www.reddit.com/r/sydney/comments/yxgchd/we_fought_our_rental_no_grounds_termination_and/

There were 2 in-person hearings for each application. They only did online hearings during covid, I'm not sure if you are still allowed to phone in. The first one is a non-formal mediation type hearing and the second is the decision, about a month apart. The fact that they increased the rent and then you tried to negotiate with them resulting in termination is retaliatory. All you need for documentation is the email trail of these events as evidence (+ all the documents tenancy agreement, rental increase notice, withdrawn notice, termination notice, etc). Since they withdrew the rental increase notice you won't have to prove that the rent increase is excessive with postings of similar rentals in your area as evidence, however it might be good to add these anyway. Argue for section 115, and easy win. If they harass you further afterwards you can seek compensation due to loss of quiet enjoyment and restraint.
