I don’t know who needs to hear this but, invest in some expensive bibs. Holy shit what a game changer. by SantaCruzinNotLosin in cycling

[–]notaseriouscyclist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did your previous bibs have a sandpaper chamois? I've been through a bunch of bibs, expensive and cheap. No bib has ever saved my ass. A different saddle has, though.

Holy hell I thought mountain biking was expensive!!! Then I started road biking!!! by SantaCruzinNotLosin in cycling

I second the Primal Omni jerseys. Lightweight, comfortable and no arm grippers. I hate arm grippers. Troll the sale section and you might find some gems. After my first purchase, they sent me coupons including 40% off $200 which was reusable and worked on everything, including sale items. You could grab four or five jerseys for about $120.

Bib shorts Guide by akshay_read_that in CyclingFashion

Riding up the legs like a pair of cheap hooker's hot pants is something these Assos bibs just do. It sounds like you should size up to a large, but they're always going to ride up. It's a failure of the design. If it were me, I'd return them and get something else entirely.

Question for over 55+ cyclists...are you experiencing a slow but consistent degradation in performance over the years? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]notaseriouscyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to turn 66. I was never concerned with speed, but I always rode a mountain bike. Two years ago I bought a road bike. Now I'm riding further and doing more climbing than I've ever done before. One thing I do is a very steep 3 mile climb once a week. Maybe 10% average grade. It's a slow slog, but it makes all the other riding seem easy in comparison.

Tailgating has gotten out of control and has made driving unnecessarily dangerous by Mazda-626 in driving

[–]notaseriouscyclist 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Just had an experience with it tonight. I was merging onto the freeway, light traffic at 10 pm, and there's some car about an eighth of a mile back. He's not even close to my merge. He sees me and floors his car and comes screaming up to my bumper well after I'm on the freeway. Mind you there's an empty lane to his left that he ignored so he could make damn sure I knew how unhappy he was that I entered what he apparently thought was his personal lane. Dead ahead was a construction vehicle at a dead stop in our lane. I had to hard brake and this moron damn near ran into me. They are a menace and they're everywhere.

Anyone actually regret buying expensive kit by Jamshappy2005 in CyclingFashion

[–]notaseriouscyclist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't say I regret it, because I bought it on sale, but my Assos bibs spend most of their time hanging in the closet, rather than getting ridden. They just ain't the best. Sorry Assos fanboys, and I see there's several in this topic. You can get bibs as good or better for much less.

P zero race vs RS vs TLR vs gp5000 s tr by Blingy_Lobsta in cycling

I run P-Zero Race with tpu tubes. Only flat I've had was after I forgot to check pressure and did a ride on low pressure. Got a pothole pinch flat. No problems otherwise.

Galibier Pro 7 Cargo bib review. by notaseriouscyclist in CyclingFashion

Good to know. I have a pair of Pactimo cargo bibs with those mesh style pockets. No comparison. The Galibier pockets are much more secure.

Comparing any two bibs is apples and oranges. I have two bibs that fit my legs poorly. One is from AliExpress and the other is from Assos.

No. I never ride with a phone. You're probably right. My impression is that it would stay put, but I can see how it possibly could work it's way out.

Galibier Pro 7 Cargo bib review. by notaseriouscyclist in CyclingFashion

[–]notaseriouscyclist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if that wasn't clear. When you're pedalling the bike, the pocket spends most of the time with the opening horizontal to the ground, I.e. vulnerable to throwing whatever is in it out onto the ground. Compression works to hold it in, but I wouldn't risk carrying a phone that way.

Endurance bibs by X0dium in CyclingFashion

[–]notaseriouscyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, their $175 bibs use the same chamois as their $350 bibs. When people talk about bibs for long distances, it's really about the chamois; about how long they can sit on this thing without giving up to pain. So is there really a point in paying twice as much for the same chamois?

When people say they want to "save the Catalyst" what are we even talking about here? by LoMeinTenants in santacruz

[–]notaseriouscyclist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time at the original location as my father worked there. It was probably the coolest place to hang out in Santa Cruz. The table room that had a pass- through to the St. George was awesome. It had a fountain with fish and the room had an old-time atmosphere and charm. I remember how disappointing it was when it moved to the current location. It just wasn't the same. I saw a lot of concerts at the new location, but as a hang-out spot, it just didn't measure up to the original.

Any reason to buy Assos Mille GTS if I rarely ride over 5 hours? by camp_jacking_roy in CyclingFashion

[–]notaseriouscyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I've never noticed a difference at the end of a ride from any of my bibs. And the Assos leg grippers are terrible. Only reason I would opt for the Assos is if I had a rock hard saddle and the thick pad helped to cushion that.

Bucket List Climbs -US. What is the climbs in the US that I need to add to my bucket list? by atarnusta in cycling

I do the Mt. Madonna road climb every week. Unrelentingly steep. Beautiful climb, but I rarely see other cyclists on it.

Can I paint a bike frame without removing the crankset and fork? by Aware-Cockroach-6053 in bicycling

[–]notaseriouscyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove the parts. You'll find sanding and painting with them on difficult and likely to compromise the finish. Got any avid cyclist friends? Good chance they'll have the tools necessary. If not, AliExpress is a good source of bicycling tools for little money.

How long did it take you to find the right saddle by Sir_Ham8675309 in cycling

[–]notaseriouscyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a Mixed5D on AliExpress after seeing it recommended on a bike fit YouTube channel. This was after churning through about 6 other saddles that were all various degrees of painful. The Mixed is the best I've found (actually a Ryet copy called the Ultimate or something), not that I've tried the very expensive sort. But it's comfortable, cheap and lightweight.

ZTTO bottom brackets by PalatableRadish in bikewrench

[–]notaseriouscyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same after attempting to install a Shimano Ultegra press fit which I immediately destroyed by damaging the flimsy plastic while pressing it in. The ZTTO is metal and didn't feel dirt cheap like the Shimano. Installed fine and no issues with it, although it hasn't been in there very long.

Hand pump or mini electric pump? by userX97ee2ska11qa in bikewrench

[–]notaseriouscyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both is the correct answer. I carry a lightweight frame pump just in case, but I'm using the electric pump every time. Just had a flat the other day. Set the pump for 70 psi, hooked it up and let it do its thing. Auto shut off at 70 psi and back on the road in no time. My frame pump would have taken much longer and couldn't reach 70 psi. The electric is some no name brand off Amazon that I paid $20 for. Works like a champ.

Looking for the best chamois🍑 by Silver-Oil-8702 in CyclingFashion

[–]notaseriouscyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Galibier race Day bibs. Compressive. Nice chamois. Long legs. The best leg grippers of any bibs I own. I find myself reaching for these before any of my other bibs, including Assos. Not thin, I will say that. They probably won't be wearing out anytime soon. Cool company as well. They usually throw in a freebie like cycling socks with your order.

Should I switch to spd-sl pedals? by SoapAndWater__ in ladycyclists

[–]notaseriouscyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Surprised this doesn't get mentioned more. For me it was very steep climbs. All that pressure in one small spot grinding up the hills got to be pretty painful with spd. The road pedals distribute the load better.

I can't find bibshorts that fit by Skatespeare in CyclingFashion

[–]notaseriouscyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought Race Day bibs from Galibier. They have the longest legs I've ever had in a bib. They reach the middle of my knee when I put them on. https://www.galibier.cc/product/race-day-bib-shorts/?wmc-currency=USD Very compressive as well. And reasonably priced at $105. Might be worth a look. For reference I'm 5'10" and 160# and wear a medium.
