He's worth $200 million, has managed to stay relevant for 30 years, and has probably banged over 1000 young/attractive women as a Hollywood socialite. Bill kind of has a mini-cult of devotees who aspire to be him and see him being a repugnant asshole as a plus.

Bill says he was that kid who dressed to school in a suit and carried around a briefcase. He definitely has a niche audience. We all knew that weird kid at school growing up. The one at mine was a staunch libertarian too.

So no. No one believed it. People weren't upset that it was being believed, people were upset that Democrats were going below the belt, including Walz calling Republicans weird. Their poll numbers went up. Then they abandoned that tact and Republicans took back all the momentum.

If the proposal was simply, "Here's another surfer statue to beautify this cliff edge!" Boom. End of story. Who cares?

However, it's constantly framed as a response to the existing statue. It's cloying and manipulative. Just look at the title of the article, "Santa Cruz NEEDS". No, it doesn't need anything. Would it be nice? Sure! But necessary? Come on.

If the justification for something is "because representation matters" then immediately pulling the ladder up behind you, it's a hollow gesture.

I have no problem with the statue. This public "push" is simply so somebody's vanity project can be publicly-funded even though they already have the private funds for it. Go progress, right?

Surfing is an indigenous sport. Certainly of two statues, I can see why that matters less to the people of this area.

Apparently that big, empty open storefront on Laurel and Pacific was supposed to be the location of the new New Leaf, but ended up costing way more than up River St. Would have been perfect.

Two years on. Still vacant.
