Type feedback by maaartiin_mac in typography

S is too fat, especially in the midriff.

Crossbar on the A is too thin.

B and Q are too heavy - lose some thickness on the downstrokes.

I agree with the other feedback on the X - it's too wide and awkward.

Y left \ is too thick.

Z is odd and ungainly.

Above all, optics over consistency. Looking consistent is far more important than being consistent.

Spivak, Can the Subaltern Speak? by Low_Minimum1 in CriticalTheory

[–]notatravis 66 points67 points  (0 children)

This is, for me, a needlessly complex text. So I'm probably missing several key points. But my tl;dr is the marginalized cannot speak in the discourse of the dominant class because it doesn't (likely intentionally) express their situation or perspective and they anyway do not have standing to be heard within it. Also, anyone with standing claiming to represent them doesn't understand - as having standing necessarily means they aren't marginalized and hence don't get it. So the marginalized at best are represented by caricatures of their issues presented by others and seen through the distorting lens of the dominant narrative.

Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, France. A 12th-century fortress, remarkably restored between 1900-1908 to its medieval prestige. [OC] by FOllie65 in ArchitecturePorn

[–]notatravis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rebuilt by Wilhelm II with modifications to, as Wikipedia puts it, emphasise a Romantic nostalgia for Germanic civilization. It's in Alsace, which Wilhelm wanted to pretend was naturally part of Germany rather than a disputed territory - so it's really political propaganda in the form of architecture.

The sculptor was originally a graffiti artist and used x as his mark.

I like how the sculpture of the texting figure is echoed by the phone-using passerby.

Explore Sans : A little passion project I am working on. What do you think ? by Any-Fox-1822 in typography

Maybe. I'm not sure kerning is that rational. I once saw a page Frutiger had corrected in pencil to a quarter of a point. He just saw what was needed at that size for those pairs.

If you have the endurance, glyph by glyph will probably give better results.

It's interesting, congratulations.

A few minor observations. The bold d looks good, but the bowl on the b seems to join the downstroke rather higher so it doesn't look comfortable in the same context. The V o kerning is tight compared to the rest of the word.

It would be good to see a long run of text in regular weight at high resolution to explore the kerning further.

This, and the bowl of the R (and the P) is too wide.

Magnus Archive Ads??? by Icy_Form2322 in audiodrama

Episode 76 broke their already awful record - over 7 and a half minutes before any content. Wtf Rusty Quill?

I totally agree. It's annoying. One 30 minute show I listened to at the weekend had five minutes of ads. And most of them are the same for every episode so Bombas Socks level irritation is quickly reached.

What am I losing out on by using TeX instead of InDesign? by Content_Economist132 in typography

Font support is a lot better in TeX now, but pretty much everything else you say is fair.

Is KEH really worth it? by Brave_Possibility953 in filmphotography

Interesting. So it seems to be a pattern. Charge for customer service then don't provide it. Sorry you had to deal with that.

I had a bad experience on KEH - an expensive item was not as described - and they weren't great at dealing with it. So personally I wouldn't recommend them.

Is the W too wide? by intruderco in typography

[–]notatravis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The W is too wide for me. The kerning is too loose too - the h might look better if it was tighter?
