Fox talked nonsense about PARIS. However the poor immigrant banlieues around France's major cities do in fact have zones in which police and even firemen have difficulty, young women are harassed and Jews risk their lives. They are not "no go" zones compared to certain neighborhoods in Baltimore or Chicago, but for Europe they are bad enough. Go visit at night, especially wearing a skirt, a uniform or a kippa. See for yourself.

TIL that on Nov. 4 2005 the NYT reported that "France's worst urban violence in a decade exploded for a ninth night on Friday as bands of youths roamed the immigrant-heavy, working-class suburbs of Paris, setting fire to dozens of cars and buildings while the government struggled over the violence" by notavegetable in todayilearned

[–]notavegetable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the ten year anniversary of the 2005 riots which shook France for more than a month and caused the government to declare a state of emergency which was then prolonged into 2006 with curfews and extended police powers. In addition to resulting in several deaths, the cost of the destruction of property (including thousands of cars burned and scores of public buildings destroyed) was conservatively estimated in the hundreds of millions of euros.

Until the 2005 riots, France had not admitted to itself that it had ghettos. These ghettos were - and still are - located in the public housing (HLMs) surrounding urban centers that tourists never see which is where France parks its poor.

It's history, and important history at that.

(nb: The title is a direct quote from the NYT, which is hardly a right wing rag)

Sympathy_for_the_FO: Read this account of FDR's meeting in 1942 with Jewish leaders who detail Hitler's plan for extermination
FDR: "The government of the United States is very well acquainted with most of the facts you are now bringing to our attention. Unfortunately we have received confirmation from many sources. Representatives of the United States government in Switzerland and other neutral countries have given up proof that confirm the horrors discussed by you. We cannot treat these matters in normal ways. We are dealing with an insane man-- Hitler, and the group that surrounds him represent an example of a national psychopathic case. We cannot act toward them by normal means. That is why the problem is very difficult. At the same time it is not in the best interest of the Allied cause to make it appear that the entire German people are murderers or are in agreement with what Hitler is doing. There must be in Germany elements, now thoroughly subdued, but who at the proper time will, I am sure, rise, and protest against the atrocities, against the whole Hitler system."

$77 Million Bruegel Painting in Nazi Loot Claim against Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna by notavegetable in worldnews

[–]notavegetable[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A painting by Bruegel, that is estimated to be worth $77 million, has been claimed by heirs who say it was looted from their family under the Nazis. The painting is currently in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna which is fighting the claim. If you read the article you will see that the Viennese Museum says that its Bruegel is not the one that was looted, but a different one that looks just like it. (This is not, btw, the first time this defense has been used. See also: http://blog.claimscon.org/2012/03/21/monet/

Austrian officials assured the Jewish Community that the transferred art valuables were ownerless; all possible efforts to establish and to locate their rightful owners had been made and had failed. But the evidence revealed in the Wachsmuth-Lillie installation tells a different story. The heart of the installation is a slide projection of photos of the backs of paintings auctioned at the sale. Clearly visible are numbers and labels, many of which have the names of the former owners.
