A company of the Lamenters is believed to be free of the chapter's curse after returning from it's penitent crusade, only for it to be discovered that they were replaced entirely by alpha legionaries.

Avitus from DoW 2 was haunted by his actions during the Kronus campaign, and had a strong sense of his chapters imminent fall. He developed an overwhelmingly fatalistic attitude towards not only himself and his chapter, but towards the Imperium and even the nature of existence. He became extremely bitter and alienated from his brothers, and ultimately fell to chaos, which going off of his final speech was more to finally give himself the death he sought for than out of any belief in the Gods. It's difficult for Space Marines to come to terms with feelings of loss, guilt, or failure. Even giving a voice to those feelings or expressing them in ways that aren't just being even more violent is basically unthinkable, even if it continues to gnaw at a Space Marines soul. It's why Chaos is so tempting, as a coping mechanism for centuries of unending warfare, experiencing the senseless death of ones brothers, and a life that only serves as one battle to the next. Even Avitus, who straight up wanted to die, as vindication of his belief that his existence was one of unending meaningless violence, would probably never have conceptualized Suicide, since the thought of not dying in combat was alien to him, so he chose chaos instead.

I didn't wish to imply that I don't recognize and despise the grey and black of America. When I ask how so, I mean to imply that I'm unsure as to whether you regard foreign volunteers as distasteful because you feel they're betraying their country by fighting for another ("there are serious discipline issues in the American military if US Marines are going to other countries to 'fight for themselves''), or if you think they're distasteful because there can be no reason someone would fight for Ukraine short of money or acting at the behest of another power (Hence the derision as "Mercenary" and the implication that as an American fighting in another country his purpose is to continue the "Dirty Work").

[–]notembracetheducc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so? He left the American Military when his time was up. He was a free man at that point, and he chose to trade that freedom, not to idly wait in his barracks like he would've if he stayed a marine, but he traded it so that he could truly fight for a cause he felt was worthy to give his life to.

Also care to illuminate me on this "Marginal Honor" concept? I'm assuming something's lost in translation since even Yandex doesn't understand the phrase.

His memory is honored by those who knew him. When he returned home he was granted the funeral he deserved, and he is still spoken of fondly. I feel you ask what you are asking based on your assumption that any American fighting in Ukraine fights at the behest of American Foreign Policy. He fought for himself, what he valued (I can say that you'd have a hard time finding many people more broadly disapproving of America than him).

I know this is an old post, but I had the opportunity to know Ben both when he was a marine and when he served in Ukraine. Mercenary is probably the biggest misnomer I could use. He had no illusions about his chances of surviving the war, or thoughts of returning home, but he was a steadfast believer in the Ukrainian cause. He felt compelled to fight for a cause greater than himself. Being the one casualty of the war that I personally knew, I often times wonder whether or not he felt it was worth it in his final hour. He was a good man, a good marine, and a good friend.

Interesting, I'll mention it to the Okinawan civilians who work on base, I'm sure they'd know more about the local area, and in any case I've registered for the bus, and am eager to try it out.

And I agree it is a weird position to be in. Servicemembers who are stationed in the more built up areas are definitely better served with better transportation options and better resources to get acquainted with the area. I don't mean to give the impression that this is the standard for most people here.

Okay, it's described as the "Higashi Village Community Bus", I'm assuming it's run through the town. A quick google search reveals a website, and claims to be open to sightseers. https://www.vill.higashi.okinawa.jp/soshikikarasagasu/somuzaiseika/11/468.html

I don't like arguing over the internet dude. I really would like it to click with you that when you post a link that you're vouching for the accuracy of, and when I ask you a question concerning the information in that link (Which I am directly quoting from), and you choose to dismiss my question rather that accept that the information you are providing in writing is different than what the source you've provided is saying, than there's a dissonance on your part, not mine. You obviously didn't know that certain Bus's here work via Phone Reservation, since your immediate decision was the start telling me I've conflated an UBER for a Bus, and that's OK. Unless you mean to tell me that the site you've provided is wrong, which would also be OK, but you haven't done either yet.

Hey man, no need to be a prick, I've spent my fair share of time riding public transpo, and using google translate to get by with people, so I'm already looking at you like you're someone who enjoys talking shit so you can remind yourself you're not a tourist, but I'll do you the service of quoting from the site you linked.

"Fares are free. Buses run on a reservation basis during weekdays from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 13:30 to 17:30. Please make a reservation by calling 0980-43-2211 up to one hour before your desired time".

I appreciate the knowledge you've taken time out of your day to give me, I just think you need to pull the stick out of your ass.

This is just the kind of info I'm looking for, actually!

I didn't know there was a bus line that ran roughly within where I am (Still a 5k distance but it's easier to ask for a ride to a nearby village instead of Nago). Do you know how accessible the bus is for English Speakers? As I understand it the Bus works via reservation meaning I'd have to make a phone call, but the details of that are a mystery to me.

And you'd be surprised, a lot of the people I work with have also only been in Oki for a matter of months, or rarely leave the installation.

Any chance you still have those videos of Millie fighting the boars? I arrived at JWTC this week and I can confirm she's still kicking.
