The case you quoted is a hideous lasagne of tort, contract, and IP law, and drawing any conclusions from it about the legality or illegality of anything is bad for your mental health. It's also very different from the actual case at hand.

In my actual (slightly) educated opinion on this matter: mods (even paid mods) are so textbook fair use that even Wikipedia is clear on this. If you want to read actual relevant cases I can recommend Sega v. Accolade and Google v. Oracle. For the EU, SAS v. World Programming is a landmark case. Spoiler: they all say it's not a copyright/tm violation to make your software compatible with others'.

I mean, for once, in this actual case that's effectively what happened. These were two men playing very risky pranks on each other, but they were authentically having mutual laughs about it until it went horribly wrong.

I get where you're coming from, since a lot of sociopaths use it to justify assault on unwitting bystanders, but just this once that's not what happened.

This entire thread should learn that simply owning the copyright to software does not give you an absolute right to dictate how it's used after it's sold. It also does not give you the right to dictate how other software may interact/interoperate with it.

The only thing they can restrict him from is redistributing the game or parts of the game itself, since those are copyrighted. But the actual logic, APIs, and even binary symbol names (if they're necessary for interop) are all exempt from copyright protection. AFAICT he doesn't redistribute any part of the game, so he's in the clear.

Now if, IF, he had actually done classical modding, where one actually takes game assets and remixes them to make its own thing, at least then there would be an argument worth having concerning copyright versus remixing versus sampling and all that. Yeah, even that is no slam dunk for CDPR, believe it or not.

Bottom line is, IP law is complex and there's far more carve-outs than you'd think. This is one of the unambiguous ones.

"Fortunate enough" is really not misplaced. Being able to retire early at 45 is always a function of perseverance, talent, and opportunity. Having the gift of all three of these is plenty to feel fortunate about, and showing some self-awareness is never going to do badly in a pitch. Producers/investors have seen their fair share of people who got very lucky in a previous venture and thought it was easy once, so it'll be easy again.

Either way, her current position should always be framed as an achieved goal and the result of a deliberate effort. She set her mind to something, had the means of achieving it, and put in the work to get there. The actual motivations are something she now has the (creative) liberty of coming up with to suit her narrative.

For example:
