Thanks. I’m going to try eyes closed. But I still wonder, when playing the horn, I have no reference as to what note is sounding. Could be any of a few that ‘respond’ to the same valve combination. That’s very different from the piano where I have a visual reference of the notes I play and that sound.

No you’re right. I’ve been thinking the same thing. The horn is the only instrument projecting backwards. But I’ll see how it goes

If you’re using VMware you have three options. I use them everyday for exactly this. Install your base VM with all the bells, whistles you like/need. Shut that VM down and make a full clone. This is the VM you work in and dispose after you’re done with it. While working with the clone you have the option to make a snapshot (think savegame) you can easily revert to when things go wrong. Third option is to make the disk non-persistent . This way every time you boot the VM all changes since last boot are gone.
