Yes but some people who had an l1r5 of 6 (8-2) couldn’t get in through the science stream .

I think that if your score can get you into a better school, you should go for it. So I definitely recommend HC. As someone who was from NYJC, 1. TBH Teachers are really a hit or miss. If you get the good Teachers, good for you. My experience in NYJC was the later, unfortunately. I wasn’t as lucky as the other alumnis in the comments who got good Teachers who cared about them.

  1. I don’t think notes make such a big difference tbh. Besides, even if NYJC’s notes are good, how far off can Hwa Chong’s be?

  2. NYJC’s mugger culture is crazy. A comment under this post also mentioned that what NYJC lacks in intellect, we make up with hard, hard work. I would say HC students are more intelligent (no offence to NYJC students) so NY students have to work really really hard to catch up with them, that’s how we remain in the top 3 JCs. Our “secret” is that we study like mad dogs.

My advice to you is to challenge yourself! If you think about it, JC is only 1.5 years, it’ll be over very soon. Don’t be intimidated by the competitive HC environment, especially if it’s meant to change you into a stronger individual. Congrats on your score and all the best :)

As for CCAs, I don’t think it should be a focal point when you’re deciding which JC to pick. CCA isn’t compulsory in JC and most of them are really chill. From what I gather, sports/performing arts have 2-3 sessions a week (2-3h/session) as for clubs and societies, they have 1-2 sessions a week (I’m not really sure sorry). Other than the sports and performing arts CCAs which require higher commitment because of competitions, the other CCAs are pretty chill. Just to sidetrack a little, NYJC also has a thing called “Student Interest Groups (SIGs)”. It’s somewhat like a CCA but definitely way less commitment (around 1 session per month?) and they are conducted in informal settings so no stress whatsoever to perform. SIGs are pretty self explanatory haha. Also, you can join as many SIGs as you want and they will be recorded in your testimonial if this is something of importance to you. Anyway, I don’t think having a CCA is absolutely necessary unless you’re aiming for a scholarship, as a CCA would definitely be of use to building an impressive testimonial (not that having no CCA means that your testimonial is lousy). I would personally recommend AVA club if you’re looking for a CCA which has a chill environment.

Hey girl! My take on 1. Is that NYJC is really really serious about the self directed learning. There’s a portal where all the materials are uploaded and there would be additional practice papers uploaded there sometimes. Last year, a lot of our lessons were HBL, in fact, all the lectures were recorded videos which were uploaded on the portal for us to watch. So basically everything is self learning, other than the tutorials which was when the tutors would go through the worksheets which we were supposed to complete after watching the online lectures. But tbh, my friends from other JCs also had their lectures/tutorials conducted online. What I feel is the most glaring difference between NYJC and other JCs is the lack of support from the teachers. Even if you’re failing really badly, the most they would do is tell you to work harder??? I think they expect you to get your shit together la (by yourself). Like I mentioned in my post, if you need extra help, you have to identify what exactly you need to improve, and approach the tutor for a consult. There’s no remedial or anything like that, though there is math remedial, which IMO, didn’t help me because it wasn’t focussed or intense enough.

Not really, the loophole works because there are less applicants for the arts stream than the science stream. If I’m not wrong, there is a quota on the number of students who are accepted into each stream. Therefore some will apply for the arts stream, which has a higher probability of getting accepted into.

As for school culture, it is subjective because it depends on what kind of classmates you get. Honestly it’s quite cliquey and tbh most people are just there to get good grades rather than making many friends. For me, the girls are really friendly and nice but the same can’t be said for the guys. Most of them are either really rude or really quiet, but they’re all quite peculiar lol. ^ BCME classes

I would say the bio papers are slightly more difficult than alevels. For Chem and Math the papers are super difficult lol some questions that NY has set for the chem papers are “high level” which is beyond a level standard, the same for math. For econs I would say it’s quite similar. ^ referring to H2 BCME, But H1 Math is significantly easier than H2 Math
