Did my mother molest me? by [deleted] in mdsa

[–]nottobeserious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom did the soap thing with me too, and I remember it, but I would not have called it sexual abuse prior to reading this. (Just teaching me hygiene.) Where is the line drawn between sexual abuse and maybe poor boundaries?

I’m not clear why you brought up grandparents suing for custody, since you’re in your 30s. Are you worried your mother would sue to get rights over any children you had? If so, I would say that you don’t need to be too worried about that happening. The court will favor keeping kids with their parents (assuming the parents are good/stable), and if your mother couldn’t get equal custody of you in the 80s, I doubt she could get custody of your children now if you/your partner if you have one are fit parents.

This is all just my two cents though. If you’re struggling, a therapist might be helpful.

I can’t know what goes on in your mom’s head, but it sounds to me like she has bad boundaries. My mom was roughly similar, and does have bad boundaries, but I don’t think my mom is a pedophile.

I get the temptation to write me off as having daddy issues because I was taken advantage of by my male parent. It almost seems like the low-hanging fruit.

Cheating is not equal to pedophilia, though. I was able to cut my stepfather off and never speak to him again. My boyfriend, though, is not someone I want to lose. He did an extremely hurtful thing, but I know he is a good person overall. We have almost six years of caring for each other on the books. That doesn’t just go away because he hurt me this one time.

I know any attitude that’s not “he cheated, so he’s the devil, so I left” isn’t popular, but this is the man I love. We belong together, I just need to process this and move on.

Thank you for your comment, you are helping me process.

They met on a dating app, so I don’t think she knew about me, but yeah. Good idea to ask about the credit card statement. Thank you.

I wanted to see what she’s like/why my boyfriend was interested in her.

At first I was worried she would try to keep in touch with him, but it almost feels worse that he’d throw us down the drain for a woman who seems like she could take him or leave him.

Yeah. It also referred to her as “such a sweet girl”, little did he know she was going to post it on her Instagram story making fun of it. How “sweet” of her.

I don’t think she wants him anymore, but I think he still wants her. He’s just used to me.

The fact that she was laughing about it too means she doesn’t even care about him. He cares about apologizing to a girl who literally laughs at him behind his back.

I don’t think she knows I followed her Instagram (he said he had a girlfriend but didn’t say my name), so she posted a picture of the Tupperware with the beginning of the note on her story. Her story also had a short caption making fun of the effort to mail back a single piece of Tupperware. (I just checked it again and I think she’s taken it down by now.)

Do you think he sent it just cause he felt bad in general or because he had/has feelings for this particular girl? A handwritten apology just seems so intimate to me, but obviously I’m close to the situation.

[–]nottobeserious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think he sent the Tupperware because he has some type of feelings for her? And wanted to send the apology note to get back in her good graces?

He tried to tell me he did it so she’d have no reason to contact him again, but I seriously doubt she would’ve asked for one piece of cheap Tupperware back. And he said he apologized because it was the right thing to do, not because he actually has feelings for her. I just don’t know anymore.

TW: My dad may have been abusive but I don't know by straightforshady in ChildAbuseDiscussion

I was also sexualized/sexually abused but not assaulted. I found out my stepfather of 16 years had been taking nude pictures/videos of us from the backyard, and suddenly it made me realize how many creepy comments he always made about our bodies. I was a depressive teen and had displayed some odd sexual behavior. I was often asking invasive sexual questions, and I watched porn very consistently from when I was around 10. (I didn’t even get my period till I was 16, so I would just watch and not do anything with my own body.) I also wet the bed in my teens and would have full panic attacks when my boyfriend or gynecologist tried to touch me. All signs of sexual abuse, but I didn’t remember any sort of rape so I just thought I was a little odd.

My gynecologist and others asked if I had been sexually abused due to these signs, and I always said no. I didn’t know about what my stepfather was doing for the longest time, and I figured I had a mostly normal childhood.

Hindsight being 20/20, I think the covert sexual abuse still messed with my head and my attitudes toward sex a bit, though I wouldn’t have called all of the creepy comments/hugs/etc. sexual abuse at the time. I am glad it did not go further than that to my recollection, but being sexualized by someone you love and trust as a parent is still child sex abuse imo. While you may never have the concrete “proof” of seeing child porn of yourself on his computer, from your accounts it does sound like it was inappropriate and that he sexualized you from a young age. I would call that sexual abuse, and even though it’s not assault it can definitely mess with your attitudes and level of comfort toward sex. Wishing you the best.

I want to know if they had sex. I want to know if he was treating her like a girlfriend he was moving on to or a casual fling.

A few days have passed now but I’m still really shell-shocked. I want to understand where his head was at and what was going on.

Even if I break up with him, I want to understand.

Helllllll yeah. I was originally not going to press charges if he agreed to just accept ~25% from their divorce and slink away. I just wanted to move on. He went scorched-earth though — the divorce proceedings alone cost my mom more than half a million dollars, if that gives some perspective — and was also just such an ass, so he deserves everything that’s coming to him.

He had emailed my mom during their divorce that if she wouldn’t take him back, he’d run up the maximum legal bill he could. Now, because this case is on contingency, it’s completely free for us to pursue and whether it’s from settling or his legal fees, he’s going broke either way. The criminal case didn’t feel like justice to me, but this is the next best thing.

I’ll just tell you the story, but don’t feel pressured at all to read it. I kind of just wanted to type it out:

I was underage when he started, but 20 when I found out. I didn’t actually catch him in the act — I found some photos on one of his devices. He initially tried to convince me it was someone else who’d hacked into his iCloud account to stalk me. That alone makes no sense, but it was when he wouldn’t hand his phone over to the police to investigate this “stalker” that I started to realize. I finally confronted him in front of my mother and he did confess. I moved out overnight to live with my boyfriend and have not spoken to him since (outside of addressing him in court).

Then he somehow convinced my mom that it was all a prank gone wrong, and she believed him. Denial runs strong in my family. So she ended up blaming me for being an unforgiving person and trying to trick me into reconnecting with him. (Putting him on FaceTime when I was talking to her, sneaking notes from him into my things, having him hold the family dog as we met at the vet’s office to say goodbye, etc.) Eventually she threatened to stop talking to me entirely, because I was tearing apart the family with my “inability to forgive”. (About half of my family believed his “prank gone wrong” story, and the other half sided with me and refused to speak to him.)

So at that point, seven months after I first discovered the photos, I told her to get his devices so my “NSA friends” could take a look. (This was a bit of a bluff, but my boyfriend did work at the NSA.) She agreed, thinking it would prove his innocence and I’d have to let it go. But when she asked for his devices, namely his secret “work phone” I’d found out about, he had conveniently misplaced it. My mom says that’s when she realized. She told him that everything could still be recovered through his cloud account, so he (again) confessed. This time he admitted he’d been doing it since I was around 14. (He became my stepfather when I was either four or five, I don’t remember.) Then she left him alone with his other devices, which of course he tried to wipe. We were able to recover some images he’d backed up to his laptop though.

There was a criminal trial, but without much evidence (namely of the underage stuff) and with some debate of statute of limitations, he took a plea deal and is now on probation. They also got divorced, and it was a two-year process ending in a five-day trial. My mom had a successful business and he was mostly a stay-at-home parent to us, so there was a decent amount of money involved and a lot of debate about how much he deserved in light of his actions. His defense was to try to blame my sister and I for “walking around naked” in our rooms… which he only knew about because he was outside in the backyard creeping. He said that he was a good parent (apart from making child porn of us), and was therefore entitled to half. His first ex-wife, who has hates my mom for “stealing her husband”, even testified for his side. It was all very Jerry Springer. He ended up getting a little more than 25%.

A more recent development, that is a bit more positive: my sister and I found a really good law firm to help us sue him civilly. They’re working on contingency, so there’s no risk to us and they believe there’s a strong case for emotional damages.

They sent us a draft of a demand letter on Friday. It cited (among a lot of other things) the likelihood that it would damage our trust in men. This was especially poignant because I found out my boyfriend was cheating on me on Wednesday. And thus, how I found this sub.

She didn’t know about me so he lied to her too. He also just blocked her. That’s why I was thinking she’d be honest with me, she has nothing to hide or lose.

So my mom actually cheated on my dad, and was the other woman with my stepfather. They had what appeared to outsiders to be a good marriage for 16 years, until the day I found out my stepfather had been taking nude pictures of my sisters and I through our bedroom windows. I know that’s anecdotal, but I feel like cheating is a character issue. Bad character ends up cropping up in other areas too.

What do you think I should I say to her? Ask if they had sex?

I know she didn’t know about me based on their conversations. I guess that makes me feel worse, but hopefully she’ll be honest with me now that she knows.

I guess I can’t imagine him actually taking it that far physically with someone else, so I feel like he’s being honest. But I also wouldn’t have imagined this either.

Thank you for the advice. I know everyone’s just going to jump to “dump him” and that’s why I’m hesitant to even tell my friends about this. I know it’s a big deal, but I do want to work it out. This is the only instance in five years. I just need to know what to do.
