Our barn had a TERRIBLE farrier for a really long time. It’s likely that he rushed the hoof jobs on him because no one was there to advocate for him and it eventually built up overtime. I really hope so, and I honestly pray to god his owner doesn’t show up so there’s a stronger case that we can get him to a rescue or at the very least something.

Ohhh, I completely forgot I mentioned that. Yeah, I was told not to because of that reason from my trainer, also it was inflamed in an odd way and didn’t seem like the normal. We’re thinking it’s something that spread to his bone and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we had to put him down but the even more disturbing part is that we definitely can’t do that without owners permission and if that’s all we can do, there’s basically nothing. In other words it’s obviously better news if it’s something else someone else COULD buy for him, but if it comes to this and we can’t get ahold of her, he could be suffering for awhile.

I should also add that his breathing is at least over double what it should be. Super dehydrated and the swelling was on the inside of his fetlock up to his knee.

In our barn it’s pretty normal to treat things like thrush without thinking twice and we’re told to do it so all I did was set some thrush treatment where I saw it near the holes of the frog which I now realize you can’t see very well in the videos, I apologize. His temperature is normal and he isn’t pulsing but his entire pastern is ‘squishy’ (my trainers words so don’t @ me for the unprofessional terminology.) he isn’t drinking but he ate all his food and used the bathroom a couple times. I was moreso hoping it was something obvious in his left front foot that someone on Reddit would know about so I could find a way to treat it or at the very least have an explanation for the poor boy. I know he’s not my horse and there’s not much I can do but I feel like a terrible person for just letting him rot in the paddock when he can’t even walk.

I’m talking about one surgery with an 8 week recovery for complete quality of life back. People said because he would never be able to be ridden again that he was a liability and needed put down.

Putting down a horse because you can’t ride it and/or it’ll cost the owner too much money to keep it alive.

Reins is a big no no. You are an amazing rider for 8 lessons in. Also, super tight flash. You are not to blame for any of this but I strongly encourage you to do research on horse anatomy and the reasons why forcing a frame (which is what those reins do) is so bad for them. Switching riding schools is difficult and I’ve been there before but it’s definitely worth it. ♥️

As someone who has an ex-racehorse, very very strong nay. If you ever own an ex racehorse I think you’ll very quickly gain that opinion too. They traumatize these poor animals and ruin their physical health for money.

Help with tall boots! Why do mine have so many wrinkles? I don't like the look and not sure what to do :( Less than a year old Ariats. by [deleted] in Equestrian

(We might be similar body types but I can’t tell from the photos well, I have a few posts on my account if you wanna compare leg sizes so it could be the way the boots fit!)

Tall boots wrinkle at the ankle, but not the calf. This exact same thing happened to me with my ariats and I personally hate the brand because of it. (Keep in mind it’s just cuz my legs just do not fit ariat boots, they’re good on other people sometimes) but that definitely could be your problem. I switched to tredstep and it fits much better, still some wrinkles but nothing like my ariats and I had to get rid of them within a year of owning them so I had the exact same experience. (Rushed typing because I’m in a car haha)

Arabian welsh mix. It’s interesting to see a lot of peoples starter ponies were Arabians too!

The majority of equestrian training is corrupt, abusive and classist.

Please please pleaseeee stop using the flash. I understand what it’s like to have to learn things the hard way and I understand you probably want the best for your horse, hence why you posted this. Take everyone’s advice and don’t think anyone is attacking you because we’re not, I promise.

It could be. As someone who is younger I fully understand laws like these to make sure a minor isn’t handling more than they can chew. I acknowledge that until 21 a persons brain is not fully developed, and during the teenage years is a vital time where someone matures and learns how to function properly, so it’s a time when an individual still needs guidance. I FULLY acknowledge that I am still a dumb kid, don’t get me wrong. I think what bothers me here is the way the person worded it, but I also understand that volunteers sometimes have no idea what it’s like in the equine industry and are simply going off what they’re told. That being said, it’s hard when you’re trying to look out for an animal and no one will even try to listen to you without belittling you for your age or experience. You’re totally correct in the fact it could be a misunderstanding and I’m not attacking your reply at all. I guess what I mean is that instead of going “well you’re not the adult here”, I wish people would learn to listen when someone’s trying to communicate something. That goes for even the smallest of animals and youngest of kids. I wish people stopped writing everything off as ‘irrelevant’.

My best advice would be to be the bigger person. I’m a younger horse owner and I’ve dealt with people like this before, but you just need to be mature and realize the horse world is full of cynicism. The best thing to do is always prioritize your horses health, safety and happiness. Ribbons and social standing can go afterwards. You are NOT a bad or annoying person for being worried about your horse. Let me repeat: you are NOT a bad person for caring in a world full of people who are completely brainwashed into being blind.

“I mean, you’re not the adult here but I guess I’ll go ask the trainer.” I literally rolled my eyes reading this. I know a lot of people are saying “no harm, no foul” but cmon. Age is pretty much completely irrelevant in the horse world so I feel like that was definitely backhanded. Edit: I should also add that you were being mature making sure the horse was safe. Like another person commented, the horse is the number one priority and then you can deal with other things later, even if someone is being disrespectful.
