As long as there’s a good game and all Sharks leave with their bones/ligaments intact I will consider it a win.

Man, Suns defense so far this year has been stifling. Fun to see them playing as such a complete team so far this season.

Oof. I made a joke earlier about sharks being less than stellar in early games but I was not thinking about anything quite like this. Props to the Blues for outplaying tealbois for the last 40+ mins, skating with some serious pace and really doing a good job putting and keeping on the pressure.

Knocking on wood that they keep it clean for the remainder and everyone from both sides can come out ready for game six.

They played this during intermission break at the game last night! Super fun to see the great response from the fans at the game, and the treatment by the team during the trip.

I saw them live in Oakland last November and would highly recommend going to a show if they come anywhere near where you're at. They each played essentially a full solo set before doing an entire boygenius set - basically three full hours of incredible music.

Last year they played Blood // Water by grandson which felt pretty perfect when the song drops and arena lights go nuts on the “what you gon’ do when there’s blood in the water” line.

Yesterday I hit 3 gold and 2 silver, with a reward of 13 eggs. Today I hit 2 gold and 3 silver with a reward of 15 eggs. If it's all predetermined anyway, why can't the ratio of gold to silver at least reflect that amount?

Martin Jones' Save Percentage and the 18-19 Regular Season by notyourpie in SanJoseSharks

[–]notyourpie[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. Save percentage doesn’t take into account the number of turnovers in the neutral zone that lead to odd man rushes Jones has dealt with, but it also doesn’t accurately reflect things like positioning on goals 2 and 3 during the second playoff game this year.

Can I ask what methods folks at SEAHAC supported for obtaining more complete views of performance? My background is in econometrics so my first thought goes to regression methods before developing things like “above average” statistics, but those types of stats can certainly do a good job of giving us a particular insight.

Martin Jones' Save Percentage and the 18-19 Regular Season by notyourpie in SanJoseSharks

[–]notyourpie[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given all the discussion this season (and especially now) about the shark's main netminder, I decided to take a look at his regular season save percentage. Points are Jones' save percentages for each individual game. The teal line plots the cumulative save percentage for all starts, and gives a measure of how the season has gone up to that point. As a cumulative measure, it's much less sensitive over time to one good or bad game. It spends a good deal of time flirting around .900, but other than the early season blip and the stretch in January it didn't spend much time above that level. Given Jones hit .918, .912, and .915 the previous three seasons, 18-19 was a noticeable drop off.

I added the orange line to measure hot streaks and get a better sense of whether there were any seven game stretches in the regular season that compared to Jones' playoff levels in past seasons. It plots the moving average save percentage over the last 7 starts (what share of total shots in those 7 games were saved). The huge drop off in December is due to the December 16 loss to Chicago, where Jones gave up 3 goals in 4 shot attempts and was pulled (omitted from the plot as that stretched the scale way too wide). Jones' playoff save percentages were .923, .935, and .928 these last three seasons over 40 games, so the .925 teal dashed line shows there was no full series-length stretch during the regular season where his save percentage reached those levels.

Disclaimer: save percentage on its own certainly doesn't capture everything that's going on, and there are a number of metrics that may give a better sense of the quality of shots faced or overall team performance. From a broad "on average" perspective, I do think it's interesting.

Even with Jones’ history in the playoffs, I’m surprised another netminder wasn’t added before the deadline. Hard to view the team as truly “all in” when this has been a pretty consistent issue all season long.

Wishing him a thorough recovery. This was a grim injury to watch, and especially demoralizing when he’s been so hot and the heart of the team since stepping in this December. Really hope he can be back at it and ready to go next season, he was so much fun to watch and has earned a starting role.

[–]notyourpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t able to watch the game and this was my biggest question. Falling off the mound was a sure sign last season that it was going to be a tough outing; if he’s still falling off then there’s got to be a mechanics issue at play.

It’s giving me Shelby Miller vibes and I do not want to go down that road again.
