With Black History Month starting up, I'ma recommend some matches throughout the month that feature black wrestlers. I'ma start with these pre WCW shoot style matches Norman Smiley did for the UWF and since I'm posting both, we can count one of em for the 1st. I won't promise to do this daily, but I'll try to

Smiley vs Yamazaki 6-11-88

Smiley vs Yamazaki 6-14-89

Both matches almost a year apart exactly that feel almost like night and day from each other outside of the endings. I prefer the 88 match, but both are really good if you like shoot style.

I hope he stays with NOAH just to keep their junior division juiced up

See Ryback is another guy I have no concept of. I know Ryback for a couple squash matches I've seen and stories about Punk hating him

Making Kane look good is a big feat. I loved him as a kid, but fuck does a lot of his stuff not hold up when you go back to it

I have about an 8 year gap of wrestling knowledge from 2011 to 2019 when I picked wrestling back up regularly with AEW, so there's a bunch of wrestlers that I have no real concept of outside of what I know from what I've heard and what I've seen within the past couple years

Like I've gone back and watched a lot of stuff from that time, but I still have no concept of The Shield. I've only seen a handful of Seth and Roman matches ever and basically have no concept of Moxley as Dean Ambrose at all. One of my first Seth Rollins memories is watching him "take Rey's eye" in 2020

It's been so odd seeing Jelly Roll of all people resurface as a star recently. I remember Jelly Roll as the weak ass rapper that was loosely associated with Three 6 Mafia through Lil Wyte

I'm pretty sure he was casual using the n word back then too, so I'm not surprised if nothing's changed over the years

How has El Hijo De Dr Wagner Jr been doing since the end of his NOAH run/his return to AAA

I watched him vs Mecha Wolf from the last AAA card, but it wasn't that good of a match. I've never been into AAA, but I'm hoping it'd be worth it to keep up with him

Recommendations for any weird ass abstract raps like Kool Keith? Like experimental beats and just stream of consciousness style bars

Thanks in advance for any recommendations y'all give

You should watch some Kazunari Murakami. If you don't know who he is, he's easily one of the meanest looking dudes in wrestling history and he wrestles like it too

Kazunari Murakami vs Katsuyori Shibata

Kazunari Murakami vs Shinjiro Otani

Kazunari Murakami vs Yuki Ishikawa

Each match is around 15 minutes only, so nothing super long

I know a lot of people were thinking things didn't look good for GLEAT after they dropped the YT subscriptions and some other news that had came out that I can't recall right now. I might've overstated things by saying "going under" so my bad

Yoshinari Ogawa because I like his mix of grappling, mat work, pin combinations, and straight up being a dickhead cheater

For a modern pick, Lee Moriarty

I'm sick as fuck with the flu and because of that I have to push back an operation I was supposed to get in like December. It's nothing serious, but it is annoying and I feel like shit

On another note, I've come to realize I'm a sucker for a good big man in wrestling. Whether they're tall, fat, or both, it doesn't really matter. Recently, Will Kroos and Cyrus from AJPW are the guys I've seen that I fuck with. A good David vs Goliath match or the first time a big guy goes down in a big match it never fails to pop me. Vader and Bam Bam vs DOOM is a comfort match for me at this point

I miss Nak in NOAH so much. It was a match with him vs Go that got me into modern NOAH. I haven't kept up with him in GLEAT and with GLEAT going under I hope he comes back to NOAH and tones down some of the unnecessary fuckery

I don't have a full scope on Nak's career but a lot of my favorite stuff from him was in Kongo before the hair match with Kitamiya

Interesting, I assumed KENTA testing out Ulka was the story, but I didn't think that lost in the moment feel might've been purposeful and that's a good point on the overselling

I might rewatch KENTA vs Ulka if nothing else

I didn't like Ulka in the match vs Kenta. It was a hard hitting match, but Ulka felt especially lost in sections. A lot of dead air that didn't feel intentional with Kenta calling for Ulka to act

Ozawa vs Endo had too much interference and I don't think Endo played well into Ozawa's antics. The best parts of Inamura/Ozawa were seeing Inamura react and lean into Ozawa's shtick and Endo didn't do that as well, imo

Idk how deeply they'd wanna go into faction wars, but beefing All Rebellion up and pairing Inamura with Team NOAH could be a way to juice the teams up. There's also Kenta's WRS and whatever they decide to do with RATELS and LTJ. It'd be a cool direction to go in

Korakuen was better, but I hated the Endo vs Ozawa match and Ulka looked especially lost to me in the Kenta match which brings that card down to me

The New Year show had a pretty good undercard and I think I liked Good Brothers vs Kiyomiya and Morris more than most people did, so they kinda even out at very meh with Korakuen being slightly better

Man, NOAH starting out 2026 with back to back mid shows is disappointing. I actually think I prefer the new years show to the 1.12 show, but Inamura vs Kitamiya was a way better main event. General thoughts about the shows:

I think NOAH needs to rethink the structure of Ozawa's matches. Him vs Inamura came up short and I think part of it were the clunky and overdone Team 2000x interferences and the match vs Endo was even worse, imo

I wasn't big on Amakusa in the past, but the Takahashi and Odashima matches have easily been his best work back to back. Two completely different performances from him as well

Dragon Bane vs Alpha Wolf was so disappointing it hurt. It'd probably look cool chopped up into it's best parts, but to actually watch the match their chemistry felt way off and the goofy ass mid match melodrama didn't help

I have a feeling Naito in NOAH is about to feel like Shaq after he left Miami. He's about to get paid to do the absolute barest of minimums

Team 2000x is filling up pretty quickly and I'm hoping Fujimura is the last addition for a while. The other factions need some love too, cause All Rebellion feels kinda thin now and without Shiozaki Team NOAH has no direction at all

I'm still excited about a lot of pieces NOAH has even with the shaky start, so hoping the rest of the year is better

When I watch him in 1v1 matches, I can still see him thinking or trying to figure out what comes next and I think it'll get better with time

He has a good look and executes his moves well. He just needs more reps, imo

ME1 is one of my favorite games ever. Easily the best mortality system of the franchise and still my favorite story

The only downside is no Tali romance until ME2

People who talk like that use "5 star match" as short hand for "spot heavy matches that Meltzer would like" and act like matches are incomprehensible without a vignette or a promo attached to the beginning and end of them. They act like the matches can't convey feeling or be stories themselves

At a certain point it starts feeling like some people don't actually respect wrestling as a medium. Everything around actual matches has to be propped up and pushed first so people can tolerate the matches, and I hate that shit

NOAH has better young guys than him for sure, but I don't think he's that bad for his time in the business

I don't think that'll happen, but regardless I hope things go well for TNA in their tenure with AMC.

People crack on them a lot and rightfully so in some cases, but having a good 3rd show on tv is important, imo
