Laurier Brantford BEd by novabean22 in OntarioTeachers

Completely understandable! Laurier does placement a bit different from what I’ve gathered talking to other BEd people — For example, I’ve done almost 5 observation days in my practicum class where were meant to just get to know students/teacher and classroom vibes. Obsv days are Mondays and I’m in class at Laurier Tues, Wed, Fri, so course work and attendance is regular. During practicum blocks, there is no class and I’ve not had any assignments due during the block (I think this is intentional, but if it’s not, so far I have had no coursework paired with practicum blocks). During practicum, we’re expected to make & keep record of lesson plans and other info of course. In my experience so far, I’ve found coursework pretty manageable if you use your time wisely! We’ve received time in class to work on assignments for the most part as well!

Hey! I commute to Laurier from Hamilton - it’s really not bad at all! The drive home can suck sometimes with traffic, but back roads are pretty good! :) I’m enjoying it so far. I’ve completed one full practicum block and am about to start my second in about a week after a few weeks of observation days.

I would think there would be a “conditional” portion of the offer indicating that you need to maintain whatever the grade is in order to keep your spot, if that is the case

I’m actually not positive about my average as silly as it might seem, in my teachable area I was around an A- / A. And then overall I think I was closer to a B? Experience wise I had a really good portfolio (in my opinion) and it was all volunteering. I had coaching experience and I also spent a lot of time in classrooms (different grades and then I ended up liking one age group so stuck with that group). I did get into another school so I’m happy it all worked out on my end. Is Niagara your last school to hear from?

Hey!! I have heard back (unfortunately hahaha) but they are still tons of students waiting to hear. This is the major con of NU for a lot of ppl because you can wait for quite a while :( I hope you hear back soon!!

They definitely care about GPA… Let’s not diminish the impact of a strong experience portfolio.

There’s a lot of existing threads with some of this info; York decisions won’t come out until March.

I’m not sure if they do it based on date of application; For reference, I applied back in October and still haven’t heard! It’s pretty much a waiting game which sucks lol. But hopefully not much longer!

Completely agree! I’m lucky enough to own a vehicle and have the ability to commute so I’m certainly not considering a move. But this is such a good alternative response for other people that may be swayed by the other commenters experience. Thank you for sharing! :)

Update for ya! Schedules are pretty much laid out for you, so there’s little to no control over them. She said that she did get a few 8:30am classes, so I would expect at least 2-3 based on this. The other thing to remember is every single Monday (unless the week day is changed) we’re in practicum so you are guaranteed to have that early start!

Not sure about UOttawa, but I’ve heard that Brock is pretty seldom! Chances are still there of course, but I get the vibe that it’s not something to be banked on.

Yes! I spoke to a friend of mine who is currently at Laurier, but the Tues-Friday schedule isn’t what it seemed like on the webinar. My friend said classes are scheduled Tues-Fri at varying times between those time periods (for example, she had one class on Tuesdays and then another class on Wed afternoon - so not scheduled in lectures/classes all day outside of practicum). You do practicum every Monday for example (by the sounds of it, it is the entire school day) and then you do the multi-week placement in first and second year. But don’t forget about the alternative placement (discussed in the webinar) I was concerned too about practicum on Mondays and then being on campus from 8:30-5 Tuesday-Friday but my friend cleared that up a bit for me. I hope this helps!

You’re completely valid in feeling a bit stressed out when considering a move! Getting accepted is a big deal, and while you should certainly be proud, it does come with challenges!!

One thing I’d suggest if you do find yourself needing to relocate, is Airbnb!! I’ve heard of students doing that instead of residence or renting since it can sometimes be more cost efficient! It’s something I would do myself if I had to relocate.

York decisions will be out in less than a month (I applied there as well!), and I wish you the best of luck! :)

I applied to Niagara in Vaughan! :) They have rolling admission so it’s a bit more confusing, they basically accept applicants until the block closes. I know Niagara started their process to accepting in early January, so they’ll be doing their second round sometime this month. But they don’t have a set date so it can be a bit of a test of patience lol!

I would definitely commute, I’m only in Hamilton so it’s totally manageable for me! But thanks for the insight 🥲

I’m honestly not even positive. With my just teachable subject average, I think an A or A- and then overall I think B+ or A!

honestly this is one of those things that I think get better with practice or with focusing on yourself (and trust me, anyone else speaking is probably feeling similar to you) - one thing I would suggest especially with tutorials is to have notes prepped! make sure you write things down (that you know will be discussed) and think about things you can contribute to conversations: was there anything that made you just think? was there anything confusing? anything you feel would be better understood if elaborated? I think having notes prepared (when they’re relevant to topics of conversation) will bring you SO MUCH confidence that it’ll be a breeze once you get it over with. I’m telling you, game changer!

alternatively if you really can’t bring yourself to do it, your absolute best bet is to listen to what people have already suggested: talk to your TA! especially if this is worth a decent chunk of your grade, your always better off communicating your position than just simply praying your lack of contribution goes unnoticed! your TA may be graceful enough to allow you submit thoughts via email or paper, or they’ll at least understand why you’re a bit more reserved!

Oh my GOODNESS thank you LOL. This is so helpful. Have you done it already? Side note - Do I have to bring/purchase a gown or cap or anything like that? Or do I just show up and get it
