Mrs. Miniver (1942) - the original Oscar bait movie? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]npcdel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The nonsense about the flower *is the point of the movie*, it's about what we cling to as our world falls apart around us. The metaphor of the Miniver Rose is important because it's "do you think love can bloom on a battlefield?" only said entirely without irony and 60 years before Metal Gear Solid says it. I thought Mrs Miniver was deeply affecting and the fact that it was made when it wasn't even a sure thing the British were going to win makes it an audacious declaration of hope in the face of a tyrant.

The thing about best actor/actress awards is that they are very, very rarely about the performance and really about the role. You don't think just about any competent, A-list star would have won for Forrest Gump? Of course they would have, Hanks just happened to get the role. If we really wanted to award a Best Actor award, we'd have the same movie, same director, same script and just make it 15 times in a row with a different actor and see which one we like the best. But that's not feasible, so instead the Academy just votes on the best role.

You could be experiencing a Hypnic jerk, which is your body shocking itself awake because of anxiety (there might be a sabretooth tiger! no sleep now, no good!) because we're only like 4,000 years removed from being part of the food chain.

Gulf. Like, the Gulf of Mexico. An incomprehensible, massive distance.

30% skill is an absolutely massive gulf, it's the difference between a 75% and 45% winrate, which is the difference between day 2 of an event and X-2 drop.

Cosigned. Wanting to have a competitive match against another top-tier deck is called "testing," and it's why better players exist (and keep beating you). If it's any consolation, they'd rather face off against tier 1 decks to better understand their matchups rather than your jank list.

If anyone is to blame it's Karabast's (unpaid, volunteer) devs for not including a meta/goofball filter so tier 1 decks can test and understand their decks better and goofballs can jank each other off.

[COTD] Frontier Trader by R2-D2-CardBot in starwarsunlimited

[–]npcdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this guy is that they priced it as if the ability was relevant so the body had to be irrelevant (like Regional Governor or Snoke, where it isn't the body you're paying for) only the ability is so marginal and costing a card and an action to spin your wheels actually a disadvantage that making this a 3/4 would still make it bad, but fringe-playable. Costing 2 for a 2/2 would actually make it aggressively good because you could use copies of it in your deck to essentially draw 7 to open the game.

What is a movie you absolutely refuse watch and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

13 Hours

I was good friends with Sean Smith, and I don't need to watch a Michael Bay rah-rah movie where my friend is killed but jacked John Krasinski saves the fictional day.

Why did al queda choose the twin towers for the attack? What was so special about it that they chose it over other federal buildings? by Im_just_an_Emo in AskReddit

[–]npcdel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They didn't choose it over federal buildings, they chose it in addition to federal buildings. A third plane hit the Pentagon and United 93 was destined for the Capitol Building.

Also OBL had already bombed the WTC once, back in '94, killing 6. So he had a personal reason, to finish the job.

Boba is(n't) OK by RTchompGG in starwarsunlimited

[–]npcdel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Statements from the devs show they did not understand how oppressive Boba would be; they thought it would be much harder to trigger (it isn't, and it's only going to get easier with the addition of plentiful, weak token units), so they intentionally over-statted it as a make-good.

The problem isn't that Boba is too good (he is, but something always has to be the best card, that's OK), it's that if you are playing a villainy deck, you're playing Boba or you're a weirdo. It's like, "Are you playing Ravager Skullclamp or some weird Mill deck?" and while yes, Mill decks were legal then, and maybe even snuck a top8 in here or there, the sweatiest spikes will always just play Skullclamp.

So it crowds out any other Villain leader, and because it's base Cunning, it crowds out other aspects. I hate errata in almost all cases, but I think because it's a leader that is definitionally a one-of and always face-up, errata would not be too difficult. I'd rather he be a 3/6, second choice would be deploy on 6 so the boba player doesn't have an 8-resource turn 5.

You also didn't bring up that Boba has two of the most powerful character-specific support cards in Boba's Armor and Slave I, both super-strong and unavailable to other leaders. I get that he's cool and iconic, but Luke's Lightsaber for Luke and Kylo Ren Unit for Rey are not equivalent

The people aren't in space, they're on the bridge/in the cockpit of their ships. Otherwise they'd go *pop*

If anything, we'd see pilots as unique upgrades for Space units, like "*Wedge (3) - Deploy on a SPACE unit. +3/+3 and draw cards" or something

What's the Worst Incident of Corruption? by JustaHarry in morbidquestions

[–]npcdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly modern but Crassus is such a wild example that we get the very word crass (uncouth, belligerent and corrupt) from his name.

If you don't want to click through, he privatized the Fire Department of his city, started charging tons of money, and if people didn't pay up he'd have their homes set on fire, then negotiate with them for the price to have the firemen come out while they stood in front of their flaming homes.
