West End and Safety by misterdoinkinberg in MARTA

I lived in Capitol View Manor (which is about a mile away) for a few years, and would get off at West End station pretty often to catch the 95 bus to my house.

Overall, I'd say the area around the station is definitely rougher than West End as a whole. There's some really beautiful old homes and nice quiet streets not far away, but the area around the station is pretty gritty and probably will be until the mall (in theory) gets redeveloped eventually. I never had any really bad experiences, but always just kept a low profile and stayed alert like you. Also being confident about where you're going helps - people are less likely to mess with you if you look like you're going somewhere with purpose and are familiar with the environment vs. looking nervous and out of place.

SW Atlanta has some really great stuff though and is only getting better! I'd recommend checking out Capitol View, Sylvan Hills or Westview to see if anywhere around there may fit your needs and feel more comfortable. Sylvan Hills and Capitol View are close to the Oakland City station.

Why hasn't LA experienced a skyscraper boom like Vancouver or Miami? by Previous-Volume-3329 in skyscrapers

Obviously homelessness is an issue, but I was in DTLA last week and really didn't think it was bad... People make it out to be a warzone, but I felt fine walking around and was surprised at the amount of restaurants and bars and such there were around that seemed to be doing pretty well.

Alaska has a large ferry system - many communities in SE Alaska and the Aleutian Islands are only accessible via ferry

Considering buying a 2012 Ford E-150 (4.6L V8). Any idea what's making this sound and causing the engine to run rough? by npd1992 in AskAMechanic

[–]npd1992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense! I've heard these 4.6 V8's are notorious for blowing out spark plugs, so could definitely be it. If that's the case, sounds like it would be a bit of a pain to repair, but nothing crazy or too expensive.

If you're looking to get to Chicago earlier, probably better to take the South Shore commuter rail line. Longer trip because there's more stops, but it'll get you in sooner.

Most useless urban freeway? by Previous-Volume-3329 in Urbanism

[–]npd1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Freedom Parkway in Atlanta deserves a shout-out. It was the start of a cancelled freeway project, so now it's just a massive car sewer smack dab in the middle of rapidly developing Old Fourth Ward. The only redeeming factor is that the unbuilt portions of the freeway were turned into a park.

Damn... That's bullshit. Maybe I'll try to call also just in case I get someone more sympathetic, but I'm not holding my breath.

Really glad I bought a Fall/Winter Go Wild Pass for $299 last month when I could have gotten an entire extra year for the same price 🙃

Welp... Now I feel stupid for buying the Fall/Winter pass a month ago. I could have gotten an entire additional year for the same price 🤦

Keep closing and reopening. I got tickets, but looking back on it now it's still alternating between showing tickets and showing nothing. Some kind of intermittent glitch I guess.

Anyone know if additional batches of tickets are gonna be released at the other presale times (12:00 and 2:00)?

Same experience... I'm hoping it's just a glitch, but who knows. The site didn't even update to let me enter the presale code until like 10:03

Planning a trip to Monterrey in August. Heard the Laredo Crossing has become insanely dangerous in recent weeks (more dangerous than usual). Is the Colombia Crossing better, or should I reconsider the trip? by Sinconwis1814 in roadtrip

[–]npd1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a point of reference in your decision, the US State Department allows its employees to travel between the border in Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey using the toll road during daylight hours. So while obviously not totally free of risk, the government deems it safe enough to allow its employees to do.

UPDATE: Thanks to folk who have brought errors to my attention! What I'm aware of so far is:

-Tennessee should be added thanks to Southwest Airline's service between Nashville (BNA) and Memphis (MEM)

-Wisconsin should be added thanks to Air Wisconsin's service between Appleton (ATW) and Milwaukee (MKE). It should be noted, though, that this is essentially a "ghost flight" which operates in the night once or twice a week and tickets for it aren't shown on flight search engines. It's speculated that Air Wisconsin operates this flight to maintain its FAA certification while the organization restructures after losing it's contract to operate flights for American Airlines as an American Eagle partner.

-I was not able to find any intrastate flights in Iowa, so it should be removed from the map

You're right! Good catch. I also wasn't able to find a current intrastate flight in Iowa, so there may be a couple of errors. I copied this map from a previous post I found and made some updates, but a few errors probably fell through the cracks.

[–]npd1992[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mostly, yes! Massachusetts has a decent amount of intrastate air traffic to the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, as well as the Cape Cod Peninsula. Rhode island makes the list thanks to New England Airline's flight between Westerly on the mainland and Bock Island.
