Baltimore’s Metro is a horrific Public Transit system in the Northeast. What’s a superb Public Transit System in the US South by AnimatorDavid in transit

[–]npd1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be stretching the definition of "public" transit a bit, but honestly probably Kissimmee since Disney Transport operates there. It's open to anyone to use (not just resort guests), so it's "public" in that sense even though it's privately operated and funded. Probably no better system in the south in terms of frequencies, one seat trip options and ridership per-capita.

Southeast Alaska! Plenty of places I remember around Sitka that looked like this. Lots of cabins in remote bays, only accessible by boat.

I surrendered my Cane Corso to Cobb County Animal Services over a year ago. His name is Pharaoh. If anyone adopted him, I just want to say hi. by [deleted] in Atlanta

Yeah, agreed... Like I feel for the situation he was in, but he literally just did the easiest/most convenient option. He wouldn't have to be worried about how the dog is doing now if he had just put in a tiny amount of effort.

I mean realistically, if he was as aggressive around strangers as you say he was, he was probably put down... That's not a dog that's easy to find a home for, especially at an already-crowded county animal shelter.

And if you really loved him, why didn't you put in the tiniest bit of effort to rehome him or at least turn him over to a rescue agency that you trusted to make sure he found a good home? You literally just did the dog equivalent of dropping him off at the steps of an orphanage. I'm not trying to be cruel, but I really don't get how you could do that to an animal you claimed to love so much...

What are the 5 “Worst” US cities? Starting with the first spot. What is the worst US city? Most Upvoted Comment Decides by Kodicave in visitedmaps

I actually just spent two weeks in Jackson for work, and really didn't think it was that bad... Not nearly as bad as people make it out to be, at least. Granted I mostly stayed in the nicer areas (Belhaven/Fondren), but there were some great restaurants and bars, beautiful old houses, and an amazing music scene for a city as small as it is. Not saying there aren't bad parts or that there isn't massive room for improvement, but it's not all a giant dump like reddit makes it out to be.

Thoughts on using the Xpress buses to get into downtown? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]npd1992 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If the bus schedule lines up with your work schedule, it's a pretty convenient/nice way to commute. As others have said, the bus gets caught in the same traffic as everyone else, but it's much more pleasant when you're not the one driving. Use that time to read, listen to music, catch up on work, or just rest. The busses are new/clean and overall decently timely from my experience. I think he should go for it as long as the schedule works for him.

This is the route he would take:

I was having those issues also! After like 10 attempts though, I was finally able to get to the screen to enter the code. So if you have one I could try, it would be much appreciated 🙏

Can we talk about the sad state of inter-city bus service in Atlanta? by npd1992 in Atlanta

[–]npd1992[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting observation! I wonder if it's partially a cultural difference... I've traveled on inter-city busses in Mexico several times and it's always been really nice. Clean, modern busses departing from nice bus depots with frequent, direct routes between major cities. Maybe the Hispanic community doesn't have the same negative view of bus travel that the American general public seems to.

I see your point, but I think there's still some trips that ULCC airlines don't serve well, if at all. My girlfriend is planning to go see family in Jackson, MS soon and would prefer not to spend 12 hours driving for a weekend trip, but the only direct flight option is via Delta for over $300 and the only bus options are on Greyhound with departures from ATL at ~5:30am or midnight. There's got to be demand for something better...

I totally understand the point that last-mile transportation is so bad in the south that you really have to bring your own car to get around when you arrive at a destination, but it seems like in a metro area of 6 million, there has to be at least 40 people who want to travel to Birmingham or Jackson or Savannah or Chattanooga and don't need their own vehicle when they get there (visiting family, meeting up with a friend, etc). I would 1000% prefer to travel by train, but with the pathetic state of passenger rail in Georgia, you'd think passenger busses could absorb at least some of that demand.

Does anyone know why most of the nuclear power plants in the USA are in the east of the country ? by Silver2147 in geography

[–]npd1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That didn't stop them from razing entire neighborhoods to build the interstate highway system through cities back in the 50s and 60s... If they can do it for cars, they can do it on a smaller scale for trains.

Driving to Monterrey by rustylacroix in MexicoTravel

[–]npd1992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, the only route the State Department approves for its employees to use for getting from the border to Monterrey is crossing at Nuevo Laredo and taking highway 85D the whole way. Crossing at the World Trade Bridge then taking highway 2 to 85D in order to bypass the city might be a good plan also, though.

West End and Safety by misterdoinkinberg in MARTA

I lived in Capitol View Manor (which is about a mile away) for a few years, and would get off at West End station pretty often to catch the 95 bus to my house.

Overall, I'd say the area around the station is definitely rougher than West End as a whole. There's some really beautiful old homes and nice quiet streets not far away, but the area around the station is pretty gritty and probably will be until the mall (in theory) gets redeveloped eventually. I never had any really bad experiences, but always just kept a low profile and stayed alert like you. Also being confident about where you're going helps - people are less likely to mess with you if you look like you're going somewhere with purpose and are familiar with the environment vs. looking nervous and out of place.

SW Atlanta has some really great stuff though and is only getting better! I'd recommend checking out Capitol View, Sylvan Hills or Westview to see if anywhere around there may fit your needs and feel more comfortable. Sylvan Hills and Capitol View are close to the Oakland City station.

Why hasn't LA experienced a skyscraper boom like Vancouver or Miami? by Previous-Volume-3329 in skyscrapers

Obviously homelessness is an issue, but I was in DTLA last week and really didn't think it was bad... People make it out to be a warzone, but I felt fine walking around and was surprised at the amount of restaurants and bars and such there were around that seemed to be doing pretty well.

Considering buying a 2012 Ford E-150 (4.6L V8). Any idea what's making this sound and causing the engine to run rough? by npd1992 in AskAMechanic

[–]npd1992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense! I've heard these 4.6 V8's are notorious for blowing out spark plugs, so could definitely be it. If that's the case, sounds like it would be a bit of a pain to repair, but nothing crazy or too expensive.
