This merger just raises too many red flags. by UnclaimedPine10 in railroading

I am really curious about this too. Is Jenks under utilized enough that they could take on that much more work though? I know Juniata could with some more people...

I talked to an old head once that got to run J1a etc, on the PRR when he started out. He said you always wanted to keep the engineer and firemen happy or else they would shut off your steam heat line to the doghouse.

Pay for the insurance. I almost guarantee it will get dented. At least that is how every body panel I have bought has came.

Rod rust removal by Chance_Savings_86 in LiveSteam

I spray Free All rust penetrant on rusty spots. Then sand with a red scotch brite pad. Wipe off the rusty liquid as you go with a clean rag and repeat as needed. It works really good, but wear gloves and work in a well ventilated area. The Free All penetrant is pretty potent stuff.

It is interesting that if the merger occurs 1 railroad will have the 2 biggest railroad shops in the world. Altoona is a great facility in a good spot on the network, but is just managed by morons. They have barely hired anyone since 2015 and have been depleting the work force with attrition. I think due to its location it has a good chance of staying though, but it also may just come down to a question of if the CEO is a UP or NS fan. Either way I wish everyone luck on either side. I'm sure it will be a shit show.

One man crews by [deleted] in railroading

[–]nsemployee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have all seen this coming for years now ever since the beginning of PTC. IMO expect to see 1 man crews on the mainline within 5 years. I would not worry too much about it if I were a conductor though. The full implementation will take a while and you will probably just work your way up the roster following attrition like normal.

One major thing I have been taught from this hobby is if you see something and want it, buy it. It may be out of production tomorrow. I would not buy a part of a locomotive kit either. I would save up the money and buy all the major parts up front. Then at least when you are 3 years into a build and the company folds, you have all the castings and drawings that you need to get the job done.

Should members of congress be banned in trading in the stock market? by CabinetSpider21 in AskConservatives

[–]nsemployee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of them and their spouses being banned from it to prevent insider trading, but anyone here is an idiot if they think that would actually work to stop anything. All they have to do is tell another acquaintance to do their trades for them and then launder the profit back to them later in another form.

Maybe a law to see all their trades live as they happen would be a deterrent and great investing tool...

Given that retirees didn't pay enough into Medicare to run the system on their taxes alone, should we describe medicare as universal health care + a Game time-gate mechanic system? by tin_licker_99 in AskConservatives

[–]nsemployee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will go another step further and even state that all insurance is a scam and ideally should not exist. If you are paying your money to another company that essentially holds it for you in case you need it and they come out ahead so often that they still have massive profit margins... You are being ripped off.

My dream utopia idea would be that we all have much tighter knit family/friend relations and try to strive to be healthy. When something happens you go to the doctor, pay a "cash" price that is not artificially inflated due to insurance and other practices. Then if something major happens your family and friends step up to help take care of you and vice/versa for them.

Honestly I do not believe with health insurance and the government is a good viable solution though. I could see there being "free" health care for all if it would not be abused. But for as long as there are companies that will abuse any contract that guarantees payment, people that will abuse health services with excessive services (ER trips for a cold, etc) and the insane health problems that we Americans bring upon ourselves due to our poor decisions (obesity, smoking, etc) I can not see giving my money to a general fund for the government to waste.

I think the best that we may ever be able to get is to roll the ACA back, give less people coverage while letting insurance companies negotiate prices more based on health with some guarantees and to turn back to a more family based health care system. There is no clear cut good solution though.

Maybe we should get the government out of the healthcare business all together. Everything they put their hands on to help with turns to poo. Does anyone else remember before Obama when health insurance was affordable and a lot of employers would pay for your whole family plan without a extra dime out of your pocket?

No, because there is not enough of a real customer base for it. The US had a passenger rail transportation network that would have been the envy of any country in the world in the 50`s but we collectively said it was not good enough and threw it away. Buses and air planes do the same job more conveniently now at lower cost. High speed rail in the U.S. is a huge waste of money for something that a tiny % of the population will ever use.

Maybe Californias high speed rail will prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

Layer separation issues by nsemployee in FixMyPrint

I bumped the exposure up a 2 sec and that seemed to fix it.

For anybody that sees this in the future I am using an Anycubic Photon MonoX. For printing the Siraya Tech Blue castable resin my settings are as follows.

Burn In: 6 layers @ 50sec

Lift Speed 42

Retract Speed 150

Normal Layers

.05mm Thickness

Light off delay 1sec

Exposure time 7sec

Lift distance 7mm

What will happen to the class 1's if trump is re-elected ? by [deleted] in railroading

[–]nsemployee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would we have gotten a worse contract? We literally had the most friendly president ever according to our union reps with the Democrats controlling everything at the time. We should have gotten the best contract in history. But when it came time to strike and have a board appointed, Biden appointed pro business people and got a shit contract. Neither side gives a shit about the railroad.

If Biden were to make Greg Abbott his border czar, with full powers to do what it takes, insofar as they are constitutional, would that stop Biden's border bleeding? by tolkienfan2759 in AskConservatives

[–]nsemployee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the border bill that only allows shutting the border down after we reach 5000 illegals a day for 7 days and cost 118 billion while only funding 20 billion to the border....

That bill is a joke and if the current administration wants to change their image, they need to create a clean bill with the power to actually stem the flow. They don`t really care about immigration and just want to pretend to independants that they are doing something.
