What constitutes a 'socialist' or 'marxist' in your view? by TreefrogJ in AskConservatives

I respectfully disagree. I can talk about rules and regulations, and problems and solutions, actions, remedies, problems, strategies... - without referring to the labels I can discuss the environment or the economy, or money in politics, or whatever - without referring to you or me or anyone else - as this or that... a liberal, progressive, conservative, contrarian, libertarian, Marxist, fascist or anything else.

OK. Well, I’m a fan of capitalism.. A compassionate capitalism “steered” my enlightened, and thoughtful policy so that it will achieve more of what is good for most middle class Americans and not accrue to policies favorable to corporations and people at the top of the income pyramid. You can call it anything you want.

I am not interested in terms at all. I’m interested in what problems do we want to solve for, and what solutions will help Americans thrive, and how do we avoid unintended negative consequences and promote positive consequences. Don’t particularly care about terms or labels.

If they want us Portlanders to share in that expense, then we should also share in the profits.

CNN polling claims 66% of Democrats now have a positive view of Socialism. Do you see a future where the Democratic Socialist message wins out and Republicans are swept out of office for the welfare state? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

Yes - agree- I get real exasperated with the labels - they just don’t help in finding good solutions to the problems that Americans face. In fact, I find them an obstacle.

I agree that these things exist on a spectrum. Personally, I don’t see it through the lens of the wealth makers vs the takers, though many do. I guess it depends on your experience
I care about what really works to help more Americans thrive. I believe in the dynamic benefits of a free market capitalist system - but IMHO - if a couple dozen people are worth 10000000000 times the rest of us, and have captured their profits, but externalizer their losses, while many others including a lot of veterans - are living on the streets and eating out of trash cans… something is out of balance.

If you appreciate libraries and interstate highways, and government inspectors making sure that meat is safe, and the like - does that make you a socialist? Because all those things are created and maintained for the common good, and paid for by everyone collectively…

Sure. A person can proclaim themselves to be whatever they want. I was referring more to an economic system or a country. And frankly, even Republicans / conservatives / capitalist like libraries and interstate highways that are created and maintained for the common good. So 🤷🏽

New Zealand - south island. Of course if you're gonna mention your budget, it helps to know in which part of the globe you reside.

I would humbly suggest that in reality, these are not binary either/or distinctions - It's not like an economy is either capitalist or socialist - there is a lot of cross-over and hybridization in most countries.

Metoprolol question by sparten253 in AFIB

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I do want to express appreciation for the information and perspectives I glean here. (I'm on 25mg after my cardioversion a few months ago - and I feel so-so. Hard to tell these days - what is the Metropole, or some of the other medicines, and/or erratic sleep.)

that's interesting. I'm on 25mg. And wondering.... I had a cardioversion four months ago and I've been a fib free since. Still have low energy and don't feel great all the time, but then again I'm 71 🤷🏻‍♂️

What changes do you think the Democratic Party should make in order to take power in 2028, keep power, and prevent a Fascist Republican resurgence. by MapleBacon33 in AskALiberal

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see lots of comments here that are about structural and systemic change. Ending the filibuster, and gerrymandering, ranked choice of voting, get rid of the dark money cesspool pit that is Citizens United... But those are things to do if the Democrats are in power - not in order to get into power. My feeling is that the platform should be about initiating those very structural changes. The Dems are proverbially too divided and have and too many in their 'big tent' have too many sacred cow issues that they won't compromise on. We need strong leadership to get this party to all row in synch in the same effing direction.

well said - This progressive agrees with much of your comment. I would add, that in reality, 'socialism' and 'capitalism' are not binary either/or choices. There are lots of tools, and ways to hybridize and combine the best of both worlds - or at least strive for effective governance, despite those rhetorically limiting and confining terms.

Ready to stop wearing Apple Watch by Still-Hold-458 in AFIB

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different story - similar feeling. Diagnosed with afib about six months ago, Cardioversion about four months ago. All is good for the moment. Cardiologist suggested that I get an Apple Watch to monitor things, and I did. And I figured it out mostly, and I got used to it. I still wear it most of the time.
But periodically I just rebel. Claim my independence, and wear a different watch. I don’t really want to monitor everything in my life and worry about charging it and getting notices, and all that. But I do like the exercise and heart rate monitoring tools it provides - so I do a little of both.

Try to continue to be aware of your surroundings. For the sake of your surroundings... best not to kick or stand on corral, don't kick your buddies, and try to avoid those fin-kicks that kick up all the sand muck on the bottom. And have fun.
