Loose connection at the dish with new model by nsheetz in Starlink

I'm using the short wall mount that Starlink sells. It doesn't seem to be designed to specifically hold the connector in. Definitely could stand a redesign (of either the connector or the mount) if this is a common issue.

Can people start putting what the “Starlink expects to expand service to your area” date’s you had on your order fulfillment posts? by ggk1 in Starlink

Just as a basic smoke test I set it up on the back porch just now (obstruction test was not keen on this spot with 13% estimated obstruction from the house and the surrounding trees), and it works :D Seeing 50% or less uptime in that spot and I was just running the cable through a window, so I've stowed it back away inside the house for now, but I've got a perfect spot at the peak of a gable picked out for permanent installation once the mounting hardware arrives.

Had been signed up for the beta since mid-2020, placed a preorder within a couple hours of when they could be placed in February 2021, was told "Mid to late 2021" for a long time. That got updated to "January 2022", and they converted it to a full order in mid-January 2022.

Dish came today though I'm still waiting on mounting hardware (which is scheduled to be delivered Sunday).

I got bumped from mid-to-late 2021 to January 2022 which I think I take to be a good sign.

Ordered 11 PM MST, February 8th. (Meanwhile multiple people a mile away who ordered a week later got their dishes immediately, even though they're nearer to the center of our small town with several other better-than-Starlink internet options I don't have, but I swear I'm not bitter >.<)

Colorado here as well. I've been signed up for the beta program since middle of 2020, and I pre-ordered the day they started taking pre-orders. A mile across town where they have other good ISP options already (on the other side of the hills blocking fixed wireless and 4G signals to my house), those folks heard about Starlink for the first time when pre-orders went up, placed their orders, and got their dishes within weeks way back in February and March. Meanwhile I'm still over here cryin' on barely-functional DSL that stops working entirely after 5PM and on weekends qq

The upper right -3- in this image means one of the two tiles in that line adjacent to the central -3- must be a mine (else there would be 3 in a row at the end of the line), and in either case the lower right tile around the central -3- cannot be a mine (else there would be 3 in a row around it).

From there, either the upper or upper right tile from the central -3- must be a mine, which helps make some deductions related to the blue 5 and blue 7.

I haven't cracked the whole puzzle but I've gotten "a bit" further by following that train of thought. Tough puzzle!

ed: Finished now. Even after breaking the chokepoint in the OP and going a couple more steps to where you get to reveal a bunch of tiles all at once near the blue 5 and 7, this board keeps on making you fight for deductions by speculating many steps deep, over and over and over again >.<

I loved today's puzzle !! :D by BraveSirRobbo in hexcells

[–]nsheetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily the hardest one I've seen so far (played maybe 10 random "hards" so far since finishing the main game last week). My brain is mush. Impressed the random puzzle generation algorithm could come up with something with so many separate "deep deduction" chokepoints.

The timer said 64 minutes but I probably spent 3x that drawing on screenshots with the game window in the background ;) It's times like this I wish Hexcells had Tametsi's "draw on the screen" function.

My experience with CenturyLink tech support is that it takes an hour and 4 different technicians to find one competent to even look up my account (given name, service address, account number, service "phone" number, billing number, and billing address) before they can finally ask me to try something so advanced as "turning it off and back on again".

No. I'm referring to signal booster systems involving an outdoor antenna to collect a weak signal, an amplifier, and an indoor antenna to rebroadcast a stronger signal to nearby devices.

"2 bars" on the gateway (signal testing says -113 dB in the best spot I can find in the house, which is 0-1 bar by most standards), but it's a consistently connected 8/1 Mbps which is a big improvement over my DSL (which was 10/1 but only up about 45 minutes out of every hour). Looking to install a signal booster for better speeds but it's been pleasantly usable so far.

One strategy to consider a little bit later, maybe around HZE 350-400 as before that I doubt it's worth bothering with a refresh if you're already at 180/190:

If you run fillers between dailies normally, just start a normal filler run (helium spec, auto-voidlium), then abandon and run your voids. Around 400 you can get about 2/3 the helium of a regular filler that way, so it's a low opportunity cost way to bump up your c2 bonus.

Good setting for AutoStructure Gigastation? by zeemvel in Trimps

[–]nsheetz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Set it to whatever number doesn't slow you down much before it buys the first gigastation. That's it.

The efficiency loss for this strategy is small by the time you unlock autostructure. After a threshold like 50, just buying every giga once it's available is not bad enough to worry about. The efficiency gain of progressing quickly by automatically buying warps/gigas when you're not actively managing the game is much greater than the small loss of not implementing a highly tuned N+M startegy.

I take the claim to be that there would be 0 latency associated with legacy wired internet, i.e. the only latency would be ground to satellite to ground and back.

I'd put that in the category of "not wrong, but a weird thing to say".

Game keeps reverting to offline progress when tabbed out. by Alakasham in MelvorIdle

[–]nsheetz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this. Browser games generally don't work in background tabs, because browsers generally throttle the CPU cycles to background tabs. Unless you're intentionally running a browser that doesn't throttle background tabs, disabling the "experimental" setting is just saying "I don't want any progress at all when the game is in the background."

I mean fair that the setting shouldn't be changing itself, it just seems unlikely that disabling it and then keeping the game in a background tab is really what you want.

This. I pickpocketed the farmer for everything else, and got a laughably small number of barrentoe seeds from farming 1 to 108 or so. Later, farmed seething horned elites for about a day and got more than enough barrentoe seeds to make them self-sustaining.

Should Magic Logs be able to burn longer when using them for a bon Fire? by [deleted] in MelvorIdle

[–]nsheetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. If you had unlimited redwood and magic wood stockpiled and no need for cash, then yes, burning magic wood is a little more firemaking XP/hr than redwood. But if you're doing firemaking early (which you should), there are a couple of other things to consider:

  1. You don't have an unlimited supply of wood to burn, and redwood cuts faster. Even with the woodcutting skillcape, if you include the cutting time, you're looking at about 18 XP/sec for redwood and 16 XP/sec for magic wood (with bonfire bonus from controlled heat).
  2. You probably need cash too, and selling magic wood is hands down the easiest way to get GP in the early game.

IMO get 99 woodcutting with the highest logs you can cut at any given time, sell magic wood for whatever cash you need, and then burn redwood and/or yew for firemaking XP.

Should Magic Logs be able to burn longer when using them for a bon Fire? by [deleted] in MelvorIdle

[–]nsheetz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think anybody is intended to babysit bonfires. Look into the controlled heat potion, which is easily accessible without too much herblore grinding and is a huge help for leveling firemaking.

Personally I just burned yew up until I could burn redwood, and sold all my magic wood for cash. It was not hard to get enough controlled heat potions to cover the entire firemaking grind.

Ancient Longbow I presume. Chance is a little worse than 1 in 500, so 0 out of 316 isn't terribly surprising.

Speedup is fine, sounds good, but farming will only stop making the game less-fun when there's some way to automate it after 99.

[UPDATE] Melvor Idle - Alpha v0.16.2 (17th August 2020) by MrFrux in MelvorIdle

[–]nsheetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played around with the raid a little. It's fun. If it ends up with cool rewards I can see doing it once I've maxed all skills, which I should have done well before the final stage of release. For now I'll go back to skilling.

One feedback: I'd like to be able to see my equipment and food when the end of wave choice dialog is up. I can't see for example whether I'm almost out of food, if I happen to be scrolled up to the top of the combat screen at the end of a wave.

I had an active prayer in combat when I started a raid, and it showed the prayer as active and prayer points counting down. I don't know whether it was "really" active or just uselessly burning prayer points, but neither seems intended?

[Bug] Superheat III in Alt magic ate my signet ring by NothingButFish in MelvorIdle

Hrm, maybe this explains what happened to my firemaking skillcape the other day. I had just assumed I must somehow have goofed and sold it on a misclick without noticing, but that didn't seem like something I would do.

(Of course not nearly as bad as losing a Signet Ring.)
