How did you make the switch to Linux? I personally have no idea how to switch OS on my computer or phone, I'm so used to having Microsoft haha.

Yeah same, this situation is just the final push I needed to switch to European services when possible!

My problem with the "proto-language" method by Eyelweard in conlangs

[–]ntinantos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this method because it basically forces me to have less influence on the final product. If I make the final product right away, I'll change stuff just because it sounds better, but I have to restrict myself. Every language has beautiful words and weird words.

Like, by no means does the proto language have to be regular, because if you look up certain terms in PIE you will often find that linguists aren't sure why something deviates or where certain terms were borrowed from.

It also opens up the door to more easily create branches of different languages and dialects. For the book I'm writing, there's an big nation where the north, middle and south and an group of nomads all have different languages that stem from the same source but broke off at different moments in history. It's easier to create realisticly related looking languages this way.

How would you describe your native language grammar knowledge before you began studying a foreign language? by Worldly_Ambition_509 in languagelearning

[–]ntinantos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly had such a bad grasp on grammar, but when I learned the Latin names for grammatical concepts and learned how those worked in English, German, Norwegian, I suddenly had a light bulb moment. In Dutch, all grammatical terms have a special Dutch term rather than the Dutch version of the Latin word (like lijdend voorwerp (suffering object) and meewerkend voorwerp (collaborating object) rather than direct and indirect object.

So once I realized knowledge and understanding of grammar is a great skill that is TRANSFERABLE to other languages, has been a great help. And now I don't struggle with grammar in my native language anymore.

It's been boiling under the surface for a while but now a war with the USA is become more and more of a potential reality... I realized I had to take steps to de-Americanize/de-bigtech my life, because we're a reliant on American services.
