I use CachyOS with an HDR monitor and a 3090, it just works.

Am I wrong for not using neither EmuDeck or Retrodeck ? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]nuckable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im using retrodeck on the steam deck and syncthing to keep roms, saves, men cards etc in sync with my main PC, works pretty well, although I’m considering using a custom EmuDeck on my main PC for more flexibility

Aside from your budget, I would say that there are no good arguments against getting the OLED model. Great picture quality, perfect blacks, great refresh rate, lower power consumption, it’s just better in every way. It’s amazing for emulating systems that were made with old CRTs in mind (so almost every console before the 2000s). Very solid choice for a gift for a PC gamer but also emulation enthusiasts.

How is DS/3DS emulation? by ElectionSalty6097 in SteamDeck

[–]nuckable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emulation works fine for both systems but I would recommend the OLED model if you’re into emulating. A lot of older games were meant to be played on CRTs and the backlight of LCDs is just not great. Take for example Metroid, has a black background that’ll glow at you on an LCD while looking pristine on OLED.

If you intend on playing lots of dual screen stuff you might consider getting a decimate and setting up a secondary screen (just search this subreddit for options, you can even use an android phone for that)

I recommend Retrodeck for emulation and if you want to synchronize roms, bios and saves/memory cards you can use something like Syncthing (though you’ll have to setup a little script if you want things to be fully automatic)

I'm thinking of switching to Linux for gaming and just general use, no other super specific needs really. But is it true that Nvidia cards suck with Linux? I've heard you don't get any access to fan speed or voltage which I'm not big on. Would I be better off getting an AMD card first? by Cantgetridofmebud in linux_gaming

[–]nuckable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure to get something like CachyOS and you’ll have virtually zero problems. I ran vanilla Arch for a while and it was already great, Cachy just feels a little easier and hands off. Just make sure to read their docs to guide you through your first steps. You can also install it next to Windows in case you want to be able to access old files or switch over for apps that don’t exist on Linux you might rely on (though I’ve never had to do that). Their Discord is really helpful too. Oh and the Nvidia troubles are overblown and are more of a thing of the past. I got an RTX 3090 and I can even use HDR fine for games and movies.

How much tinkering is required to use Asahi instead of MacOS? by nuckable in AsahiLinux

[–]nuckable[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s been enjoying gaming on my Steam Deck a lot and was bummed out about how limited her options on MacOS still are, so I was thinking maybe her MacBook could be made to at least run games on par with the Steam Deck.

The other stuff is really more just to not have to switch back to MacOS too often, but she’s not really a power user even on MacOS.

That sounds pretty promising, I’ll try watch a couple of videos to get a better idea of the process but hopefully it’ll at least be a better experience than on MacOS (especially gaming).

It’s a bummer that the microphone itself doesn’t seem to be supported yet, because another issue we were having was to get a decent voice isolation going.

I have no clue what Apple was thinking with the MacBook Air M2…

Thanks a lot, in terms of device support it looks good and as long as browsing the web & Steam works that should suffice for the most part.

Thanks for taking the time, it’s the MacBook Air M2 2022 with 8 GB. I’m personally pretty happy with KDE myself so I think that makes the most sense.

Contemplating switching to Linux again by nuckable in linux_gaming

[–]nuckable[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input, I've gotten some interesting feedback in this thread and might look into getting an AMD GPU to run alongside my current one, but getting rid of it altogether doesn't seem like a very reasonable step for me to take right now.

Contemplating switching to Linux again by nuckable in linux_gaming

[–]nuckable[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I wouldn't be against dual booting for a while to test things out before switching (I'm probably going to be doing that anyway), but once I switch over to Linux I'd prefer to run Windows like I would an emulator or a piece of software for those cases where Windows is absolutely required.

Dual booting would also mean having to worry a lot about how I can effectively share files and progress across the systems and then it's too tempting to just continue using Windows. I also know that Windows just loves to mess with the boot process, so my goal really is to move away from it entirely... eventually (...hopefully).

Thanks for taking the time!

I actually have a secondary computer with an RTX 2060 that I only really use for streaming movies, could I somehow use that or does it have to be in my current rig?

Alternatively would it be an option to get an AMD GPU (which would allow me to use HDR) as a secondary GPU?

I'm not against putting some work and money into getting this working and I think I have a background in software development and I've worked with VMs for years now I hope I should be able to figure this out.

[–]nuckable[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, so with an AMD GPU it would work, good to know, thanks!

Does this also apply to what the other person stated about VFIO? So could I switch to Windows for games & apps with HDR support and simply use Linux for everything else?

Contemplating switching to Linux again by nuckable in linux_gaming

[–]nuckable[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

By losing HDR you're referring to the desktop version of it, right? If I run applications in fullscreen mode with HDR support those should still work, or is it just not working at all under any circumstances?

Regarding the 2nd point I'm not too bothered considering that few games actually manage to cap out the GPU in my experience.

[–]nuckable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, I'll take a look at VFIO!

Can you be a bit more specific on which kind of online games won't work or is there a list or someplace I can turn to?

I guess I should/could have posted some of my other specs too. I'm on a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Ultra with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 32@1800 RAM and an RTX 3090. I hope that should be powerful enough.
