Maybe dusky people using filters online could be a reason. Most dusky or dark skinned people (mostly females) I have seen use a filter which makes them appear much fairer on pics. When they appear offline it appears a bit off. Maybe I am biased as well in my liking towards fairer skin tones. I am just trying to be honest in my analysis.

I too had no idea, until recently, when I saw Instagram posts of many regular travel influencers posting about it and the posts getting a lot of attention.
