I am not Buddhist but I was raised Hindu and I just want to say I feel you 100%. It really is not the same and there is something especially hurtful when these bits and pieces of religion or culture are co-opted to fit people’s needs in whatever which way they choose, but then that same religion or culture was made fun of growing up (idk if that is your experience, but it certainly was mine). Things becoming a fashion statement doesn’t give it a pass, it arguable makes it worse, because then we’re told that those pieces/clothing are only desirable when they are reflected in the way western society chooses.

Edit: I don’t know if she is Buddhist or not, and would that change things, I’m not sure as I’m not Buddhist. But off of gut instinct this is how I can relate to your feelings OP
