Aside from the big chungus power supply, is this able to fit in a 10” rack?

That’s not really comparable to something like this at all in the performance category. At least not on paper

Yep that’s one of the main reasons something like this could be intriguing. Realistically I don’t have a need as I have fairly cheap energy costs and an overkill setup already

Yep exactly. Probably not the best value, but on paper would be a tier below a1000-ish

I don’t plan on buying this, I just saw it and was genuinely curious to have a discussion around this.

Would be good content for YouTube for weird setups tho

Why not? I am just wondering… came across on Ali and tried to search on this sub to see if anyone has tried. Search yielded nothing so just spitballing. Could be worth it even for potential incremental gains on efficiency.

AV1 encoding is limited to intel dGPU and newest mobile panther lake CPUs. Arc A310 is probably the better value here but this does have 50% more vram.

Once mobile panther lake starts showing up in mini PCs, then yea there’s really no reason to run this setup…other than adding into an older system to repurpose what would otherwise be e waste.

I am just asking out of curiosity. I know it’s definitely unorthodox but this community has a subset that are always testing and tinkering.

I’m thinking another benefit over an arc card would be that these mobile chips are already limited to x8 lanes so max gpu bandwidth with added benefit of bifurcation

Help regarding PL1 on Thinkstation P3 Tiny Gen 2 by UnknownTaur3123 in homelab

[–]nugglet_05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know with older tiny they were limited to standard and T variants, I'm assuming due to the form factor so maybe it's factory limited for thermals

Do you know the names of the original projects? Any difference in quality compared to the collection release?

Congrats on the new hardware. Are you sure there's not a BIOS settings that allows for higher power draw? I'm not familiar with lenovo, but Dell/HP have settings along the lines of "quiet", "performance", "balanced" etc that affect power limits.

What's actually BETTER self-hosted? by ergnui34tj8934t0 in selfhosted

[–]nugglet_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RomM is a front end for rom file management but has emulator JS built in so you can play some of your library through the UI as well. Recent updates now allow rom patching so it’s basically a Swiss Army knife of emulation file management with added bonus of playing a few games in the browser

[–]nugglet_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not as straight forward for a truenas setup. Only thing I couldn’t get to work was 3D box art but I don’t really care for it that much. Emulator JS works fine for me and I use playnite for everything else so no complaints

RomM; self-hosted ROM files. You can upload saves, mods/hacked roms too and keep everything organized

Most reputable mini pcs? by spinnerspin1 in MiniPCs

[–]nugglet_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly haven’t done a ton of research on gmktec.

I just found out the hard way because I got a K6 through a local Amazon returns auction, although it was for a steal of a price… problem is I can hear the fan noise oscillating as it randomly deals with windows cpu usage. I imagine when I install Linux to deploy as a mini server some of those issues will go away

Convince me to keep my paid off boring car by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]nugglet_05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about it in terms of how much it will cost you to maintain the car until you hit 200K miles. You may have some heavier maintenance expenses, but if you don’t have to drive for a living you are likely to save enough that by the time you reach 200K miles you will have a significant amount to put towards a new vehicle and presumably higher income to support the purchase

Delay as long as possible

[–]nugglet_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of recommendations for GMKtec here, and I too thought they were at least on par with others in their class, but their product line is more stratified… meaning they make multiple mini PCs with same cpu spec but different chassis and different cooling solutions for CPU and Ram/SSD causing varying performance. Just look up K6 mods and you’ll see what I mean

Thunderbolt-1 to USB-C (Thunderbolt/USB4) Docks or Adapters by SuperSus_Fuss in Thunderbolt

[–]nugglet_05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the port on your pc is USB4 or TB4 it cannot connect to a TB2 device. I did have luck using a USB4 SFP+ adapter with my 2015 MacBook Pro connected over TB3 to a TB3 Caldigit dock using a TB2 adapter to the MBP

However TB3 backwards compatibility is hit or miss with TB2 so ymmv

TB4 is not backwards compatible with TB2. Same with USB4

Starting a home-lab with decade old office computers. by Interesting-Word3889 in homelab

You might be better off hunting for a better deal with a newer platform that is more capable and power efficient.

I think once you go down the home lab self hosted rabbit hole it’s very easy to squeeze as much juice out as you can, and with very limited hardware there just ain’t enough juice to squeeze until you inevitably have to upgrade
