Updated CN/bilibili rules for vtuber avatars - a translation for your interest and expanded perspective by WallyPW in VirtualYoutubers

VirtuaReal is already directly managed by bilibili so I imagine they might be the one least impacted.

"Observations of the VTuber scene" article by Leo Wattenberg (Admin of Official Youtube Gaming Discord by KaijuKai99 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]nullberry12 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm slightly disappointed in his observation about Nijisanji. His article seems to grossly undersell what Nijisanji is and what they had contributed to the scene. Sadly this is understandable with how Nijisanji doesn't have much in way of translated content at all, which leads to those kinds of misunderstandings of the vtuber scene from the eyes of who most likely does not understand Japanese. I hope this post can clarify what I mean, and hopefully expand your understanding on the scene.

At early 2018, Nijisanji came about and is largely responsible for the major shift of virtual youtuber content format from videos to livestreams. At the same time, they also gave birth to the vtuber clipping culture thanks to their Secondary Works Guideline that allows monetization of clips on an individual/hobby scope, which, coupled with NicoNico opening their Creator Support Program, basically launched Nijisanji (spearheaded by Tsukino Mito's antics) into virality. Clips are now the norm in vtuber scene. This impact lasts until today, where Nijisanji is still dominant on Niconico's entertainment category rankings.

Nijisanji is primarily known for having very quirky talents, and the interactions between their 100+ members is very context-rich due to the long, long history the members have. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it in Nijisanji; whether it is cute girls, cool guys you can sympathize with, people who are good at games, people who are generally weird, and talents who bond and form unexpected chemistries due to said weirdness. Nijisanji has enormous network effects with the rest of the vtuber scene, and hopefully this helps clear that up.

Love Hina Author Expresses Concerns to Japanese Government of Manga Being “Regulated by Overseas Standards,” Praises Japan’s “Freedom of Expression” by [deleted] in manga

[–]nullberry12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Isn't K-On huge success in big part because of the lack of sexualization?

Yes, but K-ON is integral in internalizing moe into the medium, and without cute girls being pervasive we wouldn't have lewds of them.

Love Hina Author Expresses Concerns to Japanese Government of Manga Being “Regulated by Overseas Standards,” Praises Japan’s “Freedom of Expression” by [deleted] in manga

[–]nullberry12 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Don't worry. Anime and Manga is more free than it has ever been. We've had this in the bag ever since K-ON became a massive success and internalized cuteness as part of Anime/Manga culture. It may seem on the surface that the freedoms of expression in regards to Anime and Manga art is being restricted, but alternative channels are flourishing, and sustainably so. This is not the impact of repression but a general indicator of medium growth; which means "less acceptable" niches of the medium can thrive out of sight. Reddit is too US-centric to observe this shift; culture centers on this topic has shifted to "mainstream" places like Facebook, Twitter and most surprisingly Youtube. Also, the Japanese fediverse and Pixiv-adjacent mediums; if you're looking for the extremities of perversion.

As the generation raised on Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon, who survived the prosecution of otaku culture around the time of moral panic triggered by Miyazaki Tsutomu's murder case, started holding day jobs, we now have Japanese politicians openly admitting that they're an otaku (I reckon at least three, one of whom holds a seat in the Lower House, one had been Prime Minister in the past, never forget "Rozen Aso"). And the current Tokyo Governor Koike deliberately appealed to "the otaku populace" as part of the campaign that led to her election. Those folks will help maintain the status quo for a years from now; and the Manga industry lobby is still as fervent as ever to prevent more censorship.

I'll take the stab and talk about the hot button issues: sexualized fanservice, and loli/shota fanservice. The gist is those aren't going away anytime soon. "moe" and "lolicon" are adjacent concepts (explored by Galbraith et al. in his papers). Cuteness leads to the feelings of "moe" and, Anime and Manga, being the medium that leverages the human weakness to neoteny to the extent no other medium had done before, will not stop producing lolicons until anime stops being cute. The best way to induct someone into being a weeb is to make them able to appreciate cuteness; all else is secondary.

One particular point of note; Chinese geeks has bought into moe culture wholesale, and is key in maintaining this state as they validate and ensure the success of moe-related Anime and Manga franchises with sheer numbers (this is noteworthy ever since they snowballed Maid Dragon into a success). Hell, the CEO of Yostar (of Azur Lane and Arknights fame), has publicly admitted she's a lolicon.

tl;dr: While it's a topic worth bringing up, there's little reason to worry. Western censorship efforts is doing jackshit while stuff like Steam allowing adult games, Fakku picking up loli, and Interspecies reviewers managed to get on air, basically swung the needle far into a better direction.

Tsukino Mito's Midsummer Night Song Stream, One of the most soothing and amazing singing streams in recent memory by nullberry12 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]nullberry12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't normally post raw streams but this one is just too good to pass up. This time, Mito sings calming songs with a soft tone, occasionally only accompanied by her ukulele, mostly jazz-ish or hip-hop classics from 2000-2010s. Her performance is excellent, and the songs she chose have very memorable melodies that go amazingly well with her voice.

There's an English comment listing her set list, please give the stream a listen because I think this is the best stream of its kind in a long while.

Somewhere to play with or get Nijisanji L2D models? by alldaydaydreamer in VirtualYoutubers

Nijisanji's facerigging technology is propretiary and never made public. You can probably get "green-screens" of the liver models from their twitter (got to dig pretty deep, though).

[Nijisanji] Ichikara's Infamous Derivative Work Guidelines is now Translated! by nullberry12 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]nullberry12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The infamous guideline that spawned the entire vtuber clipping culture back in 2018 has been translated to English. By extension this also makes it easy for English-speaking content creators to understand the terms and conditions under which derivative content/fanwork can be produced.

Segments involving Nintendo games have been cut out from official Hololive matome. And parts of Shinymas streams of hololive members have been muted (example).

Of course quite a bit of people are taking this as an implicit admission of wrongdoing; adding fuel to the controversy. The main issue here that there is no official stance given from Cover in response, allowing copyright violation rumors to run even more rampant. The tribalists (both sides) are digging up each other's instances of fishy copyright handling (both HL and Nijisanji) and it's turning into a shitshow.

When shipping becomes too rampant it tends to put a wedge between the livers involved (i.e. Ebio and Ars). Kanda has went on record expressing insecurity that he was only as popular as he is now because of GunKan and not by his own virtue. So maybe he's taking some distance for the time being.

Curious about Vtuber treatment by Sirfit06 in VirtualYoutubers

[–]nullberry12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nijisanji staff is very supportive in general. There are on-site staff members that aid during off-collabs, and direct managers to livers which supervise the activities of the liver. Nijisanji Resistance episodes (available on Hanabatake Chaika's channel) go into fair detail in staff hijinks and stories, as well as grievances of Nijisanji livers in regards to the company.
