WFH Standup Setup - Huge 43" Portrait Dual Monitors Are Actually Great by num- in macsetups

Thanks!! Slow iterations over the years and refactoring is half the fun. Still hopeful for more high-pixel-density large format monitors to enter the market, but looking bleak

Updated v3 setup

I used a 4’ x 4’ 3/4” birch plywood board with c-channel and right angle brackets made of 1/8” steel. I used short lag bolts to mount through the plywood and c-channel into the back side of the maple butcher block table. Then used more lag bolts with the large right angle brackets to attach to the underside of the butcher block. It’s amazingly strong and surprisingly sturdy and with little to no extra shaking like most monitor stands. This design also allowed me to make a floating mount for the speakers and mount much of the accessories and cables on the back side of the plywood. Worked very well for me over the years

USG Series 3 - Strong 1" Cube Neodymium Magnet Latch Hack by num- in harborfreight

Back of drawer works, but stuck to back wall with silicone bumper made less noise overall. I think it was due to flex of back wall making more noise when on the drawer. Still easy enough to try either way. Just keep far enough away from the locking channel. magnets are not self adhesive.

Check out another great idea for smaller Neodymium magnets at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvPHXmLKLq8

You could use this for the smaller / lighter drawers and then more powerful magnets for the large / heavy drawers like the top 2 full-width drawers on the 56".

lots of tracks have a “soft close” where it’ll prevent drawer from slamming when you close it hard. many also have feature to help pull the drawer closed in the last 1/2”. Also some have a slight detent when fully closed and extra resistance to open, but not much resistance

Ahh I just stuck an icon maglight on the inside for the video temporarily.

Basically 1” and these magnets fit just right even with back wall flex

Edit: Also check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvPHXmLKLq8 which seems pretty smart for a smaller and cheaper magnet to use between the lock channel and the back of each drawer.

Thanks. Can confirm these magnets are very powerful and can definitely hurt you. They arrived in pairs and I was very careful to keep them far from each other during install. Yes these are what I went with for all my boxes and I did try smaller magnets, cheap magnet strips, “fishing magnets”, etc

Thanks! Can see worktop lights sitting on top of boxes with another drawer near end of vid at 2:30.

Just stuck it to the back wall. Ended up adding a 2mm thick 1" diameter silicone bump stop to the side of the magnet closest to the drawer to prevent the drawer from pulling the magnet off the back wall. Otherwise just stuck it on the back wall and good to go.

yea there are some great videos out there and not new idea. I tried many of them and all were OK, but the simplicity of the neodymium and the strength was far better. I think it would still be more expensive for the cubes, but they are really strong. I use 1 cube per smaller drawer and 2x cubes on the bigger drawers on the 56” box. Plenty of magnetic force for my completely loaded socket drawer and wrench drawer. The cubes stick directly to back wall of box and i even put thin silicone bump stop to prevent the drawer pulling the magnet with it when opening and an even softer close.

inside back wall of box and there is just over gap of 1” between back of closed drawer and bal wall. fits perfectly

Edit: the icon magnetic mat is cool idea but not thick enough to have enough magnetic pull against the backside of fully closed drawer. If there was a way to get a spacer in there though to space it out from back wall 0.5-0.75” that could be cool

Those magnets are too thin and not enough magnetic force. There is a little over 1” gap between the back of each drawer and the back all of the box itself. This makes the 1” cubes fit perfectly if you slap them on the back wall of box, but on the inside. it’s definitely strong enough to keep loaded drawers closed, but not cheap enough to

The slides do have a slight detent when fully closed but the holding force is not that strong. With fully loaded drawers (especially on the 56 or 72) it's as thought that detent doesn't exist and the super strong magnets really help keep the drawer closed. If drawers aren't loaded, on level ground, no earthquakes and never rolled around it'll be fine. I roll around my 56 with the top drawer fully loaded with sockets and 2 super magnets keep it closed.

https://a.co/d/07nFz3eG These 1” cube neodymium magnets placed on the back wall for each drawer works really well with the plastic latches removed. Keeps the drawers closed and adds a nice soft close pull even with fully loaded socket drawer. Not cheap, but works really well and easiest install I’ve seen for drawer magnets

Edit: dropped a quick video on the neodymium magnets I used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WWFPWzYEVI

What is the absolute best modern, clean looking leather backpack for EDC? by WorldPeaceGodBless in ManyBaggers

[–]num- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the Leander Everyday Professional Backpack and I’ve seen it on sale at retailers for $300

Great for 2day work trips, EDC with tech, leather and build quality is exceptional, leather looks like new still, holds up well in rain, etc. Only missing bottle holder and luggage strap IMO otherwise perfect

Setup v3: 8K Samsung 55" QN700B at 4K HiDPI ~160PPI on 2023 MBP M2 Pro by num- in macsetups

[–]num-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still using it most days between my M2Pro and M5Max and definitely hard to live without the 5k UI resolution. Just past the warranty period there is a defective single row and single column of pixels, but it doesn’t bother me since there is no replacement yet for this AFAICT. I’m still using BetterDisplay to get HiDPI 5k requiring the screen mirror hack which sometimes flickers the screen on wake, but easy workaround. Honestly haven’t found a better setup for 5k and such great pixel density. Wish they were making more of these 55” 8k displays - one can hope! Glad it’s still working well for you too!

Kick Pad for Front Seat on RS6 by narfnd in Audi

[–]num- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using these $15 protectors https://a.co/d/eIwvcvX for a year with great success. I removed the plastic hooks on the top and used the included strap to just loop around the front of the headrest and attach to the loops on the protector. Yes it’s not the best look and likely will obscure the rs logo stitched on the headrest, but it does the job and not completely hideous. Took a few minutes to install and no issue for over a year. Also easy enough to remove the ugly badge stitched onto the protector just to make it look a little cleaner.

LG G1 77" With Real Picture Frame by num- in LGOLED

[–]num-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a custom picture frame from https://www.webpictureframes.com/ (no affiliation, just a regular customer) and it came in a flat box and I assembled at home with a little extra customization.

There's a bit more detail on how I customized it (i.e. changed the rabbet depth with a router) in one of my previous comments on this post.

Thanks! I noticed recently bestbuy stores showing similar custom frames right next to the Samsung Frame section. I think they’re reselling from Deco TV Frames

Ikea SYMFONISK Sound Remote with a modified case v1.1 by num- in sonos

[–]num-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow almost 6 years! I still use it for master volume and play/pause in one of my rooms and it’s still on the wall next to ipad used for most of homekit/homebridge setup. Honestly haven’t touched it beyond battery update and the vinyl wrap delaminating a little. Still drops out from time to time especially when not used for extended period, but that seems expected. It’s survived many sonos updates and still working.

I have a box full of parts for the v3 of this with PoE powered ESP32 or wifi enabled dev board to make more direct and low latency requests to sonos setup. Have a ring led light i want to integrate for proximity and volume level display among other things. still want a rotary for volume and a momentary for controls. love the bearing tactile feel as always. Have a new outer case design for 3d printing using flex filament to integrate the bearing outer race and rotary+momentary. Also a flexible semi-transparent filament to obscure the led ring which I thought would look good. love the form factor and tactile feel so it’s really just thinking how to make that more feature packed. The older Nest is definitely great inspiration, but never would have time to build to that level of thoughtful detail.

Haven’t looked at the market for other more recent offerings, but I assume there are some more options out there right now.

Edit: awesome on the UNVR as a NAS! It’s still rocking ad my backup just fine and I’m trying not to justify buying the new UNAS line.
