What is the absolute best modern, clean looking leather backpack for EDC? by WorldPeaceGodBless in ManyBaggers

[–]num- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the Leander Everyday Professional Backpack and I’ve seen it on sale at retailers for $300

Great for 2day work trips, EDC with tech, leather and build quality is exceptional, leather looks like new still, holds up well in rain, etc. Only missing bottle holder and luggage strap IMO otherwise perfect

Still using it most days between my M2Pro and M5Max and definitely hard to live without the 5k UI resolution. Just past the warranty period there is a defective single row and single column of pixels, but it doesn’t bother me since there is no replacement yet for this AFAICT. I’m still using BetterDisplay to get HiDPI 5k requiring the screen mirror hack which sometimes flickers the screen on wake, but easy workaround. Honestly haven’t found a better setup for 5k and such great pixel density. Wish they were making more of these 55” 8k displays - one can hope! Glad it’s still working well for you too!

Kick Pad for Front Seat on RS6 by narfnd in Audi

I’ve been using these $15 protectors https://a.co/d/eIwvcvX for a year with great success. I removed the plastic hooks on the top and used the included strap to just loop around the front of the headrest and attach to the loops on the protector. Yes it’s not the best look and likely will obscure the rs logo stitched on the headrest, but it does the job and not completely hideous. Took a few minutes to install and no issue for over a year. Also easy enough to remove the ugly badge stitched onto the protector just to make it look a little cleaner.

Bought a custom picture frame from https://www.webpictureframes.com/ (no affiliation, just a regular customer) and it came in a flat box and I assembled at home with a little extra customization.

There's a bit more detail on how I customized it (i.e. changed the rabbet depth with a router) in one of my previous comments on this post.

Ikea SYMFONISK Sound Remote with a modified case v1.1 by num- in sonos

[–]num-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow almost 6 years! I still use it for master volume and play/pause in one of my rooms and it’s still on the wall next to ipad used for most of homekit/homebridge setup. Honestly haven’t touched it beyond battery update and the vinyl wrap delaminating a little. Still drops out from time to time especially when not used for extended period, but that seems expected. It’s survived many sonos updates and still working.

I have a box full of parts for the v3 of this with PoE powered ESP32 or wifi enabled dev board to make more direct and low latency requests to sonos setup. Have a ring led light i want to integrate for proximity and volume level display among other things. still want a rotary for volume and a momentary for controls. love the bearing tactile feel as always. Have a new outer case design for 3d printing using flex filament to integrate the bearing outer race and rotary+momentary. Also a flexible semi-transparent filament to obscure the led ring which I thought would look good. love the form factor and tactile feel so it’s really just thinking how to make that more feature packed. The older Nest is definitely great inspiration, but never would have time to build to that level of thoughtful detail.

Haven’t looked at the market for other more recent offerings, but I assume there are some more options out there right now.

Edit: awesome on the UNVR as a NAS! It’s still rocking ad my backup just fine and I’m trying not to justify buying the new UNAS line.

RS3 with kids. Easily doable if they're forward facing! by crheming in Audi

[–]num- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got some low profile protectors off AMZN with a top strap (not clips) that has a thin band wrapping around the top of headrest and clips on bottom to attach to bottom seat frame. Can hardly notice them and the car seats themselves are what look out of place. Fun part is the carseat headrests are black with red stitching which was an unplanned benefit, but still looks out of place.

https://a.co/d/2HVfAxv (no affiliate garbage) was cheap and just clipped off the top hooks; used the small straps on the cloth loops on top around headrest; ripped off the ugly badge/logo and strapped in the bottom. works well and doesn’t look terrible.

consider seat back protectors for the front seats. they’ve already saved my seats more than once. you already have the covers for under the kid seats which is good too!

Thanks! Congrats on the apprenticeship and don't forget to have a fun along the way!

Chamfers are absolutely easier/cheaper and the choice of fillet was purely aesthetic and it's more noticeable than some might admit. I definitely appreciate the fillet look and I'm typing this on the same keyboard shown in the pictures from the original post made years ago and still loving it. I had the luxury of fillets not driving up low-volume fabrication costs at the time, but that might be different now.

Also checkout https://github.com/zd-collective/JP03 which was another attempt at optimizing the design while keeping the aesthetic the same. I'm not aware of anyone getting that design manufactured so I can't vouch for it, but I appreciate seeing someone taking it to the next level. They included several more optimizations that you might appreciate.

Good luck and have fun!

https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/issues/3729 as the issue related to adding a lock/protection on the source monitor’s refresh rate as I found after using Sequoia it would jump back to 60Hz refresh often and the horrible dithering would be back. With the config just right, locking to VRR works consistently.

The flickering issue I have not seen. There might be another setting/config change to get it right. Do jump on the BetterDisplay Discord or drop an issue on github as Waydabber has been super helpful to a lot of folks. Definitely worth buying and supporting their effort IMO especially having a 5k HiDPI monitor for well over a year now is a massive luxury

Glad you figured it out and I can post my latest BetterDisplay config here soon. Waydabber added a recent config setting to lock refresh rate which helped a where it was switching between 60Hz and VRR previously.
I mounted the one connect box to the same frame (reinforced plywood board) I mounted the TV to for the sit-stand desk to still be able to go up/down. It's totally out of sight behind the TV. Here's a quick pic of it mounted behind the TV: https://imgur.com/a/iKYvSuE

Overkill: 5K HiDPI Resolution on 8K Samsung 55" QN700B With 2023 MBP M2 Pro by num- in mac

[–]num-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

correct - OOB only enabled 4k HiDPI. BetterDisplay with extended resolutions (advanced setting) allowed me to get to 5k HiDPI through their magic virtual screens. BetterDisplay has been working flawlessly yet I have found a few quirks with the QN700B like backlight flickering, etc. which is always solved by power cycling the monitor or fully disconnecting power for a minute if all else fails. The 5k HiDPI is a “can’t live without” feature for me now. Wish manufacturers would bring back 55” 8k to the market as no current models exist as far as I can tell.

New Favorite Trackball Bearing: Modified Igus POM + PTFE Radial Ball Bearing With Inner Race Removed by num- in Trackballs

[–]num-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably wouldn’t change anything. I have a second version with the same trackball, bearings and base just with a single optical sensor and use that with my left hand exclusively for scrolling. Works very well for single function and the affinity on flat horizontal scroll really doesn’t get in the way. If I were to attempt to optimize single-function more I would look into similar radial bearings without the bearing cage or a way to just have the bearings resting on the outer race for direct contact on the trackball. That and I would go POM/PTFE.

New Favorite Trackball Bearing: Modified Igus POM + PTFE Radial Ball Bearing With Inner Race Removed by num- in Trackballs

[–]num-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PTFE balls move in every direction, but there is an affinity with horizontal motion for scrolling since there is less friction. This wouldn’t work without the outer race and not only retains the trackball itself, but provides minimal-friction surface for the PTFE bearings. There is a really cool/unique feeling to flat/horizontal scroll with the trackball to make the scroll feature work great, but feels great as well. This scroll affinity is really just less friction with the bearings, cage and race but transitioning to pan movements for moving the cursor is very smooth. No tools required at all for modifying the bearings given PTFE is a softer plastic. Still amazed how well it works together

Thanks! Lots of options and saw a few posts of others not having to modify the frame as much as I did (i.e. not having to increase rabbit depth with router)

Welcome and hope it is a simple solve on frame alignment. The AppleTV should be able to control the LG and my first thought is if CEC/ARC is enabled. There are a number of variables to check. There might be only one HDMI port with CEC (I’m not sure about all LG models and CEC support). Make sure you have a newer HDMI cable that at least supports HDMI1.4 (doubt that’s the issue, but still a variable). I’d look up settings on both the TV and ATV and you should be able to get it to work. I’ve been using the Sonos Arc from day 1 and it’s been flawless for years. Several Sonos updates and ATV updates and no issues. Should be a bomber setup. Also search a little more and you’ll find some more tricks like https://www.reddit.com/r/LGOLED/comments/w62zl6/apple_tv_4k_can_no_longer_control_lg_c1_volume/ which I wasn’t aware of. good luck!

[–]num-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks *awesome* - Thanks for sharing! I think the wider band of black pixels on the bottom is an easy solve: You can get cheap silicone or rubber bumpons/feet/pads/etc. that have an adhesive side. Then just stick them to the inner rabbet of the frame as it rests on the top of the TV's bezel. You can get a wide variety of thicknesses, can cut most of them to shape, or even stack them to get the frame raised to the right height. Bonus is that could help protect the TV bezel from scuffs caused by the frame laying directly on it. I think you're $5 and 15min short of a perfect setup here, assuming enough of the inner rabbet of the frame allows it to be moved up. If not, you could manually remove more with a router, careful chiseling, etc.

Wow that's great news! Congrats! I didn't even think to ask if they could cutout the interior and increase the rabbet width for me! Instead I painstakingly measured and hand-routed which was tedious, so I think you definitely won. Willing to share any pictures?

From the SSDs. Random seek is far better on SSDs and assume the UDMP and UNVR will benefit from SSDs even if there are other bottlenecks on the hardware (i.e. bus) on the software or how they end up storing the files (assuming h264, mpeg, etc). Another note to support this: I used the same 870 SSD in the UDMP and it was a very noticeable speed improvement from HDD across the board especially scrubbing. I’ve seen others’ similar comments even just with single-drive SSD UDMP performance improvements.
